Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Valve Gears for Steam Engines It is assumed that the student is already familiar with the arrangement and operation of the simple steam engine having the plain slide valve. The purpose of this first chapter is mainly to review certain definitions, to bring out certain conceptions, and to give the symbols, abbreviations and letters of reference which will be used through the text, so as to ensure a common basis of under standing before proceeding with the development of the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valve-Gears for Steam-Engines Graphical methods are used throughout, in the body of the book, both for demonstration of principles and for design of gear. In an appendix analytical demonstrations are given of certain principles that cannot be treated in a complete and satisfactory manner by construction only. Zenner's valve-diagram is used because it is widely and favorably known and appears to the author to be at least as good as any other circular diagram. Book Valves and Valve Gears Vol 1

Download or read book Valves and Valve Gears Vol 1 written by Franklin Deronde Furman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valves and Valve Gears, Vol. 1: Steam Engines and Steam Turbines Much Of the material in this work has been arranged after ex tended visits to drafting rooms in which the work in valve gears was being carried on in a practical way, and it is believed that the methods here presented will be found to agree fairly well with general practice. In writing up the descriptions Of the practical forms of valves and valve gears the author has received numerous courtesies from manufacturers which are hereby acknowledged. It has been the rule to have the manufacturer Of the valve or gear or engine described to pass finally on the accuracy Of the description and Of the illustrations that appear in this work. Every illustration has been newly prepared for this edition. In order to avoid the use of subscripts in numbering the illustrations and paragraphs as the work Of preparation proceeded, and as changes and additions were made, the author laid out the work originally by leaving ten numbers free at the end Of each section. It will be found that these numbers have been all used at the end Of some of the sections and that none have been used at the end Of other sections. The page numbers, however, are in consecutive order throughout the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Valves and Valve Gears Vol 2

Download or read book Valves and Valve Gears Vol 2 written by Franklin Deronde Furman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valves and Valve Gears, Vol. 2: Gasoline, Gas, and Oil Engines The part of this work on Valves and Valve Gears which relates to internal combustion engines is printed as a separate volume in order to meet the requirements Of varying courses of study, and the needs of those generally who are interested only in gasoline, gas, or Oil engines. This will enable those who wish to study particular cases to do so without being encumbered with literature relating to the steam engine when only matter concerning the internal combustion engine is desired, or vice versa. Those who wish to make a general study Of the methods of oper ating the several types Of internal combustion engines should first study Sections III and IV Of Volume I of this work. In these sec tions it is shown that seven fundamental valve forms underlie all valves in general use, and that six fundamental mechanisms, with their variations, underlie all valve gears whether applied to internal combustion engines or to steam engines. An understanding Of how the whole subject of valves and valve gears for all prime movers can be reduced to so few fundamental forms should materially aid in obtaining a grasp Of the subject as it is applied, in the present volume, to practical gasoline, gas, and Oil engines. The preface given in Volume I applies to this work on Valves and Valve Gears as a whole, and the comments and acknowledgments there made refer to this second volume as well as to the first. It is. Wlith certain types of valve gear, as will be see" later, to prevent excessive compre$si0n large elearance is "acessary. 35. DRAWING HYPERBOLIC EXPANSION LINES. First Method. Start with the X and Y axes, Fig. 38, and using absolute pressures and volumes as co-ordinates, locate the point of cutoff, c, and draw the vertical line cc'. Through any point 1 in the line cp produced, draw Ol from the origin, to intersect ed at 2. Then the vertical and horizontal lines drawn respectively through 1 and 2, intersect at 3, which is a point on the expansion curve. Other points may be found in the same manner. Starting at k, the beginning of compression, draw the vertical line kk'. Through any point, 4, on this line, draw 04 from the origin to intersect the back pressure line kb at 5. Then the horizontal and vertical lines drawn respectively through 4 and 5, intersect at 6, which is a point on the compression line. The pressure at the end of compression _is found by first determining the point of intersection 7 between O0 and kl;/, and then from this point drawing horizontally to intersect the clearance line at 8. Second Method. To construct a hyperbola through the point b, Fig. 39, draw any line through this point to intersect the axes at a and a'. Along this line from a lay off a distance equal to ab, locating the point b', which is a point on the hyperbola. 36. CUSHIONING THE RECIPROCATING PARTS. First suppose there is no compression. Then when the pist011 9-pproaches the end of its stroke the effective steam pressure and the inertia of the reciprocating part are both acting towards that end of the stroke, ...

Book Treatise on Valve Gears

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Valve-Gears: With Special Consideration of the Link-Motions of Locomotive Engines The slide-valve gears are those which are most applied and most important, and as also they alone induce R theoretical studies of the distribution of steam effected through them, an investigation into the seldom-applied valve and cock-gears has been entirely omitted in the following treatise. The slide-valve consists generally of a hollowed plate, which moves backwards and forwards over the entrances of the steam-ports; or if the slide-valve acts as a ao-called expansion slide-valve, it only consists of a single plate, which may or may not have slots or ports for the admission of steam.
