Book Uses of Values in Legal Education

Download or read book Uses of Values in Legal Education written by Graham Ferris and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Values both constrain and enable behaviour. They are a vital source of meaning in human life. They may be unconsciously inherited or consciously reflected upon. The challenge is to take the greatest advantage of value-informed teaching and learning in the context of a pluralist education and society. The values legal education imparts or generates impact upon the character of legal professionals. The work of jurists impacts upon the quality of public discourse. Legal education is under severe threat after a period of tremendous growth across the common law world. Legal markets are unstable; information technology drives specialisation of labour to new levels; rising costs for students and falling returns to the human capital generated by legal education make the prospect of a legal education less enticing. Enhanced engagement with values offers the best hope for a positive and coherent response to these pressures by legal educators. The Uses of Values in Legal Education makes a start by showing how using values in legal education might fulfil the promise of legal education.Incorporation of values into legal teaching, and reflection upon values as an integral part of the student learning experience, can facilitate the formation of robust and effective individual student identities. When this leads to an alignment of student values with life plans it can generate a sense of wholeheartedness in activity that enriches life. Students with clear and considered ethical ideas can become effective ethical agents beyond the educational setting.'This is a must-read for anyone designing law curricula. [...] He sources his arguments from the fields of literature, business, economics, politics, education, psychology, law and philosophy and he provides both theoretical and practical examples and perspectives. [...] This is an important book. It is not an easy read; the ideas are complex and the range of source material impressive, but once the premise is accepted, that we have an ethical responsibility to design legal education in the best interests of the law student, it is a game changer. 'Rebecca Huxley-Binns in The Law Teacher (2016) 411'Graham Ferris makes a clear and compelling case for why legal education should fully embrace values. He explores how values can be incorporated and taught in the law degree curriculum in order to enhance the welfare and capabilities of law students and restores the link between ethical judgment and professional practice. His book mak ...

Book Focus on Values in Elementary Education

Download or read book Focus on Values in Elementary Education written by Laura Zirbes and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elementary education is a social challenge to professional zeal and integrity. It is a distinctive means of projecting human values so that they contribute to the optimal fulfillment of developing human potentialities. This book is a record of the observations of educator Laura Zirbes, of Ohio State University, during summer demonstrations at The University School, a teaching laboratory operating in a fully functioning elementary school within the College of Education. The teacher training program stressed developmentalism, the role of first-hand experience in learning, subject integration, democratic values, and cooperation rather than competition between children. The focus here is on teachers learning to adapt these principles to their individual situations, and honing their own thinking and innovative skills.

Book Ethics and Law for Teachers

Download or read book Ethics and Law for Teachers written by Kenneth H. Crook and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of teaching in Canada is regulated both by law and professional codes of ethics and conduct. Ethics and Law for Teachers, Second Edition, engages readers in an authentic, personal consideration of the professional expectations and benefits of reflective practices of teaching in Canada. Not only does the text delve into the objective, rational standards to which teachers are held accountable, it helps to translate conscious knowledge of those standards into belief and action. To encourage reflection on and engagement in ethical and lawful practice, the text includes case studies and examples from teachers in the field, discipline hearings, and court cases. To encourage readers to consider these examples in a more reflective manner, ethical and legal expectations are presented in a descriptive, rather than prescriptive manner. The text invites readers to consider how they would act in each situation and compare their personal predispositions with society?s expectations, providing for a more inclusive and flexible understanding of how ethics are enacted in real life.

Book Teachers Have Rights Too

Download or read book Teachers Have Rights Too written by Leigh Stelzer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the law-related concerns of school teachers. Much of the data on which the book is based was collected during a four year study, conducted by the American Bar Association with the support of the Ford Foundation. Court cases are cited. Chapter one examines "Tenure." Since tenure gives teachers the right to their jobs, tenured teachers cannot be dismissed without due process of law or without cause. They are entitled to notice of charges and a fair hearing, with the opportunity to present a defense. The burden is on school authorities to show that there are good and lawful reasons for dismissal. "Reduction In Force (RIF)" is the topic of chapter two. Many school districts are facing declining enrollments and rising costs for diminished services. RIF begins with a decision that a school district has too many teachers. Laws vary from state to state. Discussed are: What requirements must be met for RIF to be declared? Who can be RIFed?; What procedures must be followed? Do RIFed personnel have reinstatement rights? Chapter three deals with "Negligence." Negligence is the failure to anticipate unreasonable risk and guard against the consequences. In general, teachers are unlikely to be held responsible for students' injuries. Normal considerations of negligence and liability protect the responsible teacher. Chapters four through eight treat the topics of "Malpractice and Defamation,""Discipline,""Academic Freedom,""Freedom of Speech and Association," and "Life-Style Choices." Two areas not examined are unionization and some of the emerging issues in the legislative arena such as teacher accountability and teacher competency. The book concludes with a list of related resources in the ERIC system. (Author/RM)
