Book excerpt: The NCO Leaders Task is concerned with the development of measures of leadership by which to identify early in their Army career those men who have potential as effective combat leaders. The study reports on preliminary exploration of relationships between certain established dimensions of interpersonal values and decision to remain in or leave the service. Measure of six dimensions--Support, Conformity, Recognition, Independence, Benevolence, and Leadership--on the Survey of Interpersonal Values (SIV) were obtained on EM and officer trainee samples in the 5th and 10th week of Army service, respectively. Measures were analyzed in relation to desire to remain in the Army as expressed by the EM after 20 weeks' service and by officers after 15 weeks. For both officer and enlisted samples, three values were found to be predictive of career motivation. Officers who desired to remain tended to score higher on Conformity and Benevolence and lower on Independence; EM scored higher on Benevolence but lower on Independence and Support. Results suggest that measurement of values may contribute usefully to prediction of military career decision. (Author).

Book excerpt: Cultural practices and artifacts, in their multiple and varied forms, are grounded on values, which are so deeply internalized by people that usually remain in the background, as taken-for-granted guides for interpretations and decisions in everyday life. Shaping individual moral horizons is at the core of socialization processes, through which older generations aim to disseminate their culturally established values to the new ones, making use of suggestions mainly implicit in daily experiences and interactions. Despite the strength of these processes of cultural canalization, people find particular ways of positioning and interpreting social suggestions, drawing singular life trajectories and developing themselves as unique beings. This is truthful also in case of highly institutionalized settings like the military, in which people play in many forms an agentic role in their own development, being prepared to perform their professional duties in very complex and challenging activity contexts. This book is an invitation to dive deeper into human experiences lived in the military through qualitative and in-depth approaches, observing their affective qualities, the meanings they acquire and how they shape individuals’ identities, fostering the development and try-out of specific ethical and moral values. The present work can contribute to research and professional practice in fields related to human development, social processes, education and people management in the military, as well as in other institutional contexts, especially by highlighting the affective, meaningful and moral-ethical dimensions of cultural experiences.

However, many modern studies suggest that motivations for volunteering for military service emulate rational-choice ethos, reflected in the values of a market-place system. Using qualitative survey data and participant observation, the underlying motivations for wanting to be Officers in the Marine Corps from this sample were explored as well as what these cases tell us about human motivation in general. This study found that the motivational impetus for desiring a Commission as a Marine reflected the historical ethos of the military, and mirror the institutional values of the Marine Corps of Honor, Courage, and Commitment"--Abstract.

A question is raised as to the efficacy of utilizing civilian motivational techniques in a military environment. It is hypothesized that the variables influencing job satisfaction for middle level civilian managers and middle level career army officers are associated in the population composed of these two groups. It was found with a level of significance = .10 that the variables influencing job satisfaction for these two groups were associated in the population they formed. Additionally, three significant differences existed in the perceptions held by the two groups. The army officer placed more value on being able to do work in his own way, receiving praise for work done, and being promoted than did his civilian counterpart. (Author).

As the keystone leadership manual for the United States Army, FM 6-22 establishes leadership doctrine, the fundamental principles by which Army leaders act to accomplish their mission and care for their people. FM 6-22 applies to officers, warrant officers, noncommissioned officers, and enlisted Soldiers of all Army components, and to Army civilians. From Soldiers in basic training to newly commissioned officers, new leaders learn how to lead with this manual as a basis. FM 6-22 is prepared under the direction of the Army Chief of Staff. It defines leadership, leadership roles and requirements, and how to develop leadership within the Army. It outlines the levels of leadership as direct, organizational, and strategic, and describes how to lead successfully at each level. It establishes and describes the core leader competencies that facilitate focused feedback, education, training, and development across all leadership levels. It reiterates the Army Values. FM 6-22 defines how the Warrior Ethos is an integral part of every Soldier's life. It incorporates the leadership qualities of self-awareness and adaptability and describes their critical impact on acquiring additional knowledge and improving in the core leader competencies while operating in constantly changing operational environments. In line with evolving Army doctrine, FM 6-22 directly supports the Army's capstone manuals, FM 1 and FM 3-0, as well as keystone manuals such as FM 5-0, FM 6-0, and FM 7-0. FM 6-22 connects Army doctrine to joint doctrine as expressed in the relevant joint doctrinal publications, JP 1 and JP 3-0. As outlined in FM 1, the Army uses the shorthand expression of BE-KNOW-DO to concentrate on key factors of leadership. What leaders DO emerges from who they are (BE) and what they KNOW. Leaders are prepared throughout their lifetimes with respect to BE-KNOW-DO so they will be able to act at a moment's notice and provide leadership for whatever challenge they may face. FM 6-22 expands on the principles in FM 1 and describes the character attributes and core competencies required of contemporary leaders. Character is based on the attributes central to a leader's make-up, and competence comes from how character combines with knowledge, skills, and behaviors to result in leadership. Inextricably linked to the inherent qualities of the Army leader, the concept of BE-KNOW-DO represents specified elements of character, knowledge, and behavior described here in FM 6-22.

Book excerpt: This book explores the connection between British and German officer cadets’ perceptions of the past and their motivations for enlisting in the military forces in the United Kingdom and Germany. Drawing upon qualitative interviews and survey data conducted at officers’ academies in the UK and Germany, the author offers a comparative analysis using differing approaches towards history and memory in Britain and Germany, while considering the roles of individual goals and societal orientations in the decision to enlist. Employing the notion of pragmatic professionalism, which reflects the fact that occupational and institutional reasons for enlisting are not opposite points on a single scale, Professionalism, Memory and Identity examines history-orientated reasons for enlistment by shedding light on officer cadets’ values, beliefs and wider cultural understandings of the past.
