Book Crisis and Contention in Indian Society

Download or read book Crisis and Contention in Indian Society written by T K Oommen and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2005-07-21 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian society is often described as one with ‘unity in diversity’ and as a composite culture. Since independence, India has also been termed ‘democratic’ and ‘secular’. However, the discernible cracks that have appeared in recent years in these conceptualisations have led to contentious debates about the very nature of Indian society. Focusing on different facets of this exacerbating crisis, this book analyses the various issues confronting India’s society and polity today which can assume crisis proportions if not tackled judiciously and expeditiously.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Values are commonly regarded as the most deeply rooted, abstract formulations of how and why consumers behave as they do. Values exert a major influence on the consumer's decision making in any situation where a conflict of choice exists. This paper throws insight upon the value perceptions and value orientations of young adult consumers in Bangalore, India. The variables under study are ten values adapted from Kahle's List of Values - LOV (1983). The total sample for the present study is 1478 respondents who are young adults in the age group 18-25 years residing in Bangalore, India. The paper also analyses the influence of gender and regional background on the value orientations of young adult consumers. Information regarding the personal values that are important to the target market, which influences their purchase behaviour, would be valuable to the manufacturers and the marketers in the product design, development, positioning and advertisement decisions.

It is concerned with understanding the psychological themes of conformity, rebellion, individuation, relatedness, initiative and ideological values which pervade youths’ search for identity within the Indian cultural milieu, specifically the Indian family. In its essence, the book attempts to explore how in contemporary India the emerging sense of individuality in youth is seeking its own balance of relationality with parental figures and cohesion with social order. The research questions are addressed to two groups of young men and women in the age group of 20-29 years-Youth in Corporate sector and Youth in Non Profit sector. Methodologically, the study is a psychoanalytically informed, process oriented, context sensitive work that proceeds via narrations, conversations and in-depth life stories of young men and women. Overall, the text reflects on the nature of inter-generational continuity and shifts in India.

Download or read book Managing Across Diverse Cultures in East Asia written by Malcolm Warner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why ‘Managing across diverse cultures in East Asia’? We re-examine in this book the link between culture and management across the region vis a vis the new economic, political and social landscape that has appeared over the last decade. We accordingly present a set of chapters on East Asian cultures, economies, societies and their management across the board, focusing on countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, as well as the Overseas Chinese enclaves of Hong Kong SAR, Macao and Taiwan. The contributors to this edited book are all specialists in their respective fields; they hail from a variety of universities and business schools across the world, located in a wide range of countries in the East and in the West. The chapters, we believe, reflect a balance between the past and present, theory and practice, as well as the general and the particular. 'East Asia could not be more important. Malcolm Warner could not be more insightful. Reading Managing Across Diverse Cultures in East Asia will allow you to gain a profound understanding of the cultural complexity in this dynamic region of the world.' - Nancy J. Adler, McGill University, Montreal 'We all need to understand more about management in East Asia, and to learn from it. Managing Across Diverse Cultures in East Asia has contributions from international experts who provide significant insights into the cultures of the most dynamic region in the world today. This book is a landmark publication.' - John Child, University of Birmingham 'This edited volume, with contributions by significant scholars from around the globe, provides a timely and penetrating review of management issues across East Asia, a region that rivals Europe and North American in economic significance and is still ascending. It is a must read for anyone who is interested in international management.' - Kwok Leung, City University of Hong Kong 'Helping a new generation of readers interested in this important region to make better sense, Managing Across Diverse Cultures in East Asia is destined to become a new classic. I expect this well-researched book to be widely read, cited, and debated in the years to come.' - Mike W Peng, University of Texas at Dallas 'Having had such unexpected disasters as earthquakes, floods and financial crises in recent years, we are increasingly dependent on people-management. Development of human resources, in turn, requires region-specific and organization-specific strategies. The present volume edited by Malcolm Warner points the reader to the secret of success in high-performing economies and firms in East Asia.' - Yoko Sano, Kaetsu University, Tokyo
