Book The Structure of Value

Download or read book The Structure of Value written by R. T. Allen and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study of the general nature of value overcomes the conventional dichotomies of fact and value, metaphysics and axiology, and description and evaluation. It begins with the general notion of value, and gives examples from a range of types of value - organic, aesthetic, technical, cognitive - and concludes with a study of specifically moral values. It distinguishes and elaborates three dimensions of value (good, worthless, bad or counter-productive) and four categories of value (instrumental, foundational, ingredience, and performance and performer value). These categories of value are all founded upon the basic category of activity, and likewise types and groups of values arise from specific activities. The activities of living, consciousness and personal beings, and their products, are achievements, realizations of value. To describe them is necessarily to evaluate them. Activities provide the frames of reference whereby objects are evaluated. Human activities are evaluated by reference to the comprehensive activity of being human. And the foundation of moral value is the unique 'value essence' that is each person.

The clear objective of this book is to inspire people to look at themselves as individuals as it pertains to making the world a stronger, and prosperous place for future generations. I emphasize the importance of individual responsibility, hard work, self-determination, and personal integrity. In this book, I thoroughly advocate the significance in young adults to receive a world-class education. I emphasize the need for individuals to exemplify the Judeo-Christian principles upon which the United States was founded; free enterprise, individual liberty, and personal responsibility. As we continue to wake up every morning in a broken society, we should not continue to ignore the perils of it. In this book, you will learn the tools in making our society better, you will learn of the importance in receiving an education, and you will obtain a set of core values and principles in which to live by. Book Idealist Ethics

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. J. Mander
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Idealist Ethics written by W. J. Mander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W. J. Mander examines the nature of idealist ethics, that is to say, the form and content of ethical belief most typically adopted by philosophical idealists. While there exist many studies of the ethical views of individual idealist philosophers there has been no literature at all on the notion of idealist ethics per se. Never is it asked: at which points, if any, do the ethical systems of all these thinkers overlap, and what relation, if any, do such commonalities bear to their authors' idealism? Never is the question posed: were you suddenly to become convinced of the truth of some form of philosophical idealism what revisions, if any, would that necessitate in your conception of the truth, nature, and significance of ethical judgements? The inquiry has two aims. The first is historical. From the record of past philosophy, Mander demonstrates that there exists a discernible idealist approach to moral philosophy; a tradition of 'idealist ethics.' He examines its characteristic marks and varieties. The second aim is apologetic. Mander argues that such idealist ethics offers an attractive way of looking at moral questions and that it has much to contribute to contemporary discussion. In particular he argues that Idealist ethics have the power to cut through the sterile opposition between moral realism and moral anti-realism which has come to dominate contemporary thinking about ethical questions. To be an idealist is precisely to hold that the universe is so constituted that things are real if and only if they are ideal; to hold that uncovering in something the work of mind makes it more not less significant.

Book The Value and Destiny of the Individual

Download or read book The Value and Destiny of the Individual written by B. Bosanquet and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Value and Destiny of the Individual: The Gifford Lectures for 1912 Delivered in Edinburgh University The general title of the two courses was "The Value and Destiny of the Individual." The first course, "The Principle of Individuality and Value," delivered last year, attempted to show how the reality and value of all things in the universe depended on the degree of their embodiment of the principle of individuality - the completeness, coherence, or self-containedness of the universe. This second course, with the title, "The Value and Destiny of the Individual," is an attempt to apply the principle developed in the first course to finite beings, that is, in effect, to human souls. It discusses in what way the so-called "individual" or human soul works out its destiny and achieves its worth, by and through its membership of the universe, the only real and ultimate individual. The present lecture, on "Finiteness and Self-Transcendence," was intended to give an outline of the course, showing how its sub-divisions are connected with different sides of the nature of finite beings as our principle requires us to analyse it. The human soul has sometimes been thought of as a celestial spark of divinity, sometimes as a crystallisation out of unconscious Nature, or out of a hardly conscious tribal collectivity, sharing the nature of a suffering deity who represents that collectivity.
