The increase is due to lack of proper sewage treatment, and primarily to excess fertilizer application. Also, eutrophication in several coastal areas is triggered by high nitrate concentrations. The main purpose of this book is to integrate scientific knowledge related to exposure assessment, health consequences and control of nitrate contamination in water. The motivation is related to the magnitude, the possible adverse health effects, and the high cost of control ling nitrate contamination. Future research tasks are defined by an interaction among hydro logists, toxicologists and environmental engineers in an integrated framework for nitrate risk management. The target readership of this book is a mix of university colleagues, practitioners from both the private and public sectors and advanced graduate students working with the hydrological, health science or environmental engineering aspects of nitrate contamination. The main conclusions include: 1. For risk assessment purposes, knowledge and sufficiently accurate models are available to predict nitrate load and its fate in water under changes in land use. 2. Once agricultural exposure controls are implemented, the response times in ground water may be so long as to make controls unrealistic. 3. It is still unknown whether agricultural best management practice is a compromise between nitrate risk reduction and agricultural revenue. 4. The current drinking water guidelines of 10 mg/L NOrN need not be changed.

Book excerpt: The Safe Drinking Water Act directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish national drinking-water standards for chemical and biological contaminants in public water supplies. The standards are to be set at concentrations at which no adverse effects on human health occur or are expected to occur from lifetime consumption, allowing a margin of safety; enforceable standards are standards that are feasible to achieve with the use of the best technology available. The standards are to be reviewed periodically to ensure continued protection of public health. Consistent with the requirement for periodic review, EPA asked the National Research Council to evaluate the current drinking-water maximum-contaminant-level goals (MCLGs) and maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for nitrate and nitrite in public water supplies. The Subcommittee on Nitrate and Nitrite in Drinking Water, convened under National Research Council procedures, reviewed information on the occurrence and toxicity of nitrate and nitrite. The subcommittee evaluated this information in the context of the drinking-water standards for those substances and drew conclusions about the adequacy of the current standards to protect human health.

Son coût est dans certains cas exorbitant vu ses effets néfastes sur la qualité et la quantité des ressources ainsi que sur l'état sanitaire de la population affectés. En Algérie la pollution nitrique devienne de plus en plus préoccupante et prend des dimensions parfois alarmantes. En se basant sur l'analyse de ce cas, le livre présent contribue sur l'évaluation du niveau de contamination nitrique des eaux de puits consommées par une population enquètée et l'identification des principales causes de cette contamination à travers le questionnaire et les analyses microbiologiques. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que 67 % des puits prélevés présentent un taux en nitrates dépassant la norme qui est de 50 mg/L avec une concentration maximale observée de 103 ± 1.41. L'analyse bactériologique a révélé l'existence de coliformes fécaux dans 17 % de puits. Les facteurs de la contamination des eaux de puits investigués et les résultats de l'enquète sanitaire de la population sont discutés.

Book excerpt: La pollution diffuse d'origine agricole est à l'origine de problèmes sanitaires et environnementaux liés à la détérioration de la qualité des eaux de surface. La maîtrise de cette pollution nécessite d'atteindre une connaissance fine, à toutes les échellesde temps, du transfert des éléments polluants transportés par l'eau. Ce travail a pour objectif d'établir le ou les temps de transfert du nitrate dans un bassin versant élémentaire. Il s'agit de connaître les réservoirs et les mécanismes responsables des variations saisonnières ,et pluri-annuelles des concentrations en nitrate dans la rivière. L'étude des dynamiques hydrologiques de trois bassins versants agricoles (Kervidy, Mélarchez, Mercube) a été réalisée à partir d'observations globales (pluie, débit). Une méthode basée sur la représentation spectrale des séries temporelles d'observations a été reprise et développée. Ainsi, par cette méthode, les parts respectives des contributions de la nappe et de l'écoulemênt rapide aux débits de la rivière sont établies. Le modèle d'écoulement en nappe et ses paramètres sont également définis. Cette méthode a été étendue à l'identification des modèles de transfert de nitrate. Une étude expérimentale a été mise en oeuvre .Trois transects du bassin versant de Kervidy (Morbihan, Bretagne) ont été équipés de piézomètres pour observer la nappe d'altérite. Les niveaux piézométriques ont été mesurés et un échantillonnage de la nappe a été réalisé afin d'analyser les teneurs de l'eau en nitrate, sulfate et chlorure. Ces observations ont permis de préciser l'hydrodynamique de la nappe et d'identifier ses principaux traits chimiques. Un schéma de fonctionnement du transfert de nitrate dans le bassin versant à l'échelle inter-mensuelle est proposé à la suite de l'analyse et de l'interprétation de l'ensemble des observations. Un modèle numérique spatialisé du fonctionnement de la nappe du bassin versant de Kervidy a été établi sur la base des observations et des connaissances acquises à la suite du travail de terrain
