Book excerpt: WHEN GOD IS FORSAKEN IDOLATRY WILL REIGN SUPREME WHEN IDOLATRY REIGNS SUPREME EVIL WILL FLOURISH WHEN EVIL FLOURISHES THE END IS NEAR Mike Hayden, writer and an avid outdoorsman, spent four weeks in the wilderness of the Bitterroot Mountains in Idaho, searching for a 209 year old Nez Perce Indian reported to be living there. When approached, the Indian, along with an Appaloosa horse and a mountain lion, would disappear. Hayden, a Native American historian, was there to glean historical information from the man. After one week the Indian materialized, along with his horse and a tawny mountain lion He said, My name is Cougar. While spending time together the duo discovered they were Kindred Spirits and held lengthy discussions about the dilemmas in paleface society. Over the years, the author spent time on Indian reservations in Canada, Dakotas and the Pacifi c Northwest. He lived for a month on the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho where he powwowed with Elders and fished for steelhead salmon on the Clearwater River at the precise shoals where Lewis & Clark first encountered the Nez Perce in 1805.

Book Don t Bug Me I m Reading

Download or read book Don t Bug Me I m Reading written by Bill York and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My cathedral is in an isolated wilderness, away from contemporary blight. After several years of marriage my wife describes me as odd. I prefer eccentric. She calls me a cheapskate. I am frugal. I also choose to be different; we put way too much emphasis on the words; Hall of Fame, legend, glamour, champion, celebrity, and famous. I may admire but never idolize, Heroes arent on golf courses nor in stadiums but in the uniforms of our firefighters, military and police officers. There are no idols in my life. Stars are to be revered only in the night sky, not in Hollywood. Rather than sit in a night-club involved in inane conversations I would rather see hummingbirds performing aerobatics, canoe a rogue river, watch a moose cavorting with her calf in a turbulent stream, see the Aurora Borealis fire streamers of color across a darkening sky, study undulating lines of snow geese, buffeted by lofty winds, honking their way to their mysterious destinations. There are yet unseen wonders in nature. My adventurous nature was established when I lived for a month on a Chipewyan reservation in Manitoba hunting seal and bear from a dog sled, using harpoons and bow and arrows, living the way of their ancestors. Frogs in a well have a limited view of the limitless sky. Beyond every horizon there is a horizon. I have canoed the Mackenzie River in Canadas Northwest Territory, the Churchill in Manitoba, Fraser River in British Columbia, the Deschutes in Oregon and the Wolverine in Nunavut. I lust to explore each wilderness on earth where overpopulation has not contaminated the environment. Time away from the fallacies of civilization is regenerative.

Book excerpt: The most ambitious and, if one excepts the Child's Garden, the best of Stevenson's work in verse belongs to his thirty-seventh and thirty-eighth years. The ballad was a literary form which he did not attempt until his second visit to America. Ticonderoga, founded on a legend of the Camerons, was written at Saranac, and published in ' Scribner's Magazine,' December 1887. In the following year at Tautira in the island of Tahiti, he learnt the legend which in The Song of Rahero is told with a flood of savage gusto in keeping with its tragic subject. The ballad, and that of The Feast of Famine, in which were 'strung together some of the more striking particularities of the Marquesas,' were written during the stay at Tautira imposed by repairs to the ' Casco.' With Ticonderoga and the two shorter pieces, Heather Ale and Christmas at Sea, the latter of which had previously appeared in the 'Scots Observer,' December 22, 1888, they formed this volume, Ballads, issued in 1891.

Book Collected Poems of Robert Louis Stevenson

Download or read book Collected Poems of Robert Louis Stevenson written by Stevenson R. L. Stevenson and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-07 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last - a complete new edition of the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson.During his lifetime Stevenson published A Child's Garden of Verses (1885), Penny Whistles, Underwoods (1887) and Ballads (1890). There were also various private press adventures in poetry with his stepson Lloyd Osbourne, and the posthumous Songs of Travel (1895), and New Poems (1918). This new edition contains these collections and also some of Stevenson's printed and manuscript poems that have never been published in any collection. The edition also identifies and restores various poems assembled by Stevenson in his Notebooks, many of which were mutilated by members of The Boston Bibliophile Society. The editor, Roger Lewis, has carefully studied Stevenson's manuscripts and letters, identifying many variants in individual poems and in orders of his collections, as well as in the editorial procedures of a succession of RLS's literary associates who claimed to be fulfilling his intentions or acting on his authority. The ordering of this edition will follow Stevenson's own final arrangement over unauthorised editorial rearrangments or strict considerations of chronology. Complete and accurate dates of composition and publication of individual poems and of collections are given wherever possible.Appendices include bibliographical description and location for manuscript and printed sources of all poems in the edition; 'poems in process' - how Stevenson sketched and revised during composition; notebooks - bibliographical history and significance; chronology and ordonnance of poetic units. There are also explanatory and textual notes. Scots poems are glossed and annotated using The Concise Scots Dictionary and web resources of the SNDA.A substantial introduction covers the publishing histories of individual volumes and literary influences, placing emphasis on Stevenson as a Scottish poet and arguing for his best verse to be considered

Download or read book Digital Media written by Megan A. Winget and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital media has exploded over the past quarter century, and in particular the past decade. As varieties of digital media multiply, scholars are beginning to examine its origins, organization, and preservation, which present new challenges compared to traditional media. To examine issues from multiple perspectives, experts were invited to an invitation-only workshop on digital media. The participants were carefully chosen to represent a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, ranging from humanities and fine arts to communication theory. The papers collected here are the results of that workshop. Digital Media: Technological and Social Challenges of the Interactive World is organized in four parts, each representing a different perspective on digital media: preservation, humanities, organizational, and historical. The section on preservation considers the problems of archiving digital media for long-term preservation; the humanities section offers a human-centered view of digital media, focusing on the interaction between technological changes and cultural practices; the section dealing with organization goes beyond the study of digital artifacts in isolation to consider the context, collection, and arrangement of objects; and the historical section examines how our perspectives on digital media have changed over time, looking at how issues such as the digital divide and digital production have changed as technology has changed. The wealth of varied perspectives in Digital Media provides new light on this topic, beyond the media studies viewpoint that is the most common way of engaging these topics. This collection will be a valuable addition for students and faculty in information studies, communication studies, rhetoric, new media, and more.
