Book Validation and Improvement of High Nature Value Identification 1

Download or read book Validation and Improvement of High Nature Value Identification 1 written by Joint Research Centre and published by Dictus Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of high nature value (HNV) farmland has been evolving over the last 15 years in Europe. In the European Union this has been closely linked to the aim of integrating environmental concerns in the common agricultural policy. The idea that nature values, environmental qualities, even cultural heritage are linked to or dependent on farming, also underlies and supports the concept of a multifunctional 'European model of farming which provides benefits beyond food production. The objective of this study is to better identify and characterise HNV farmland at national level (the Walloon Region in Belgium) with a farm system approach based on FSS statistical data and specific national surveys, taking into account the whole farm with the total agricultural area and its characteristics. The methodology is built on two different approaches: the natural zones approach and the farm system approach.

The natural zones approach uses spatial data to define agricultural zones with a verified high biodiversity interest, based on a reference biodiversity layer for the Walloon Region (WR) called the principal ecological structure (SEP). The farm system approach analyses the farm structure and farming practices on the basis of data available in the WR agricultural database. In the first step relevant variables have been selected to calculate the HNV indicators for the farm system approach at NUTS 5 level: 1) crop diversity and grassland presence, 2) extensive practices, and 3) landscape elements. In the second step the three indicators were combined to calculate the HNV score. In the third step the areas delimited through the farm system approach were overlaid with a map resulting from the natural zones approach. In the last step HNV farmland was analysed with regard to prevailing trends in farming practices and production types with the aim of identification of farming systems which might be associated with HNV farmland occurrence in the WR in Belgium. The analysis of spatial distribution of HNV farmland delimited in the study shows that 91% of the HNV farm system zone identified in the study is located in Ardenne, Fagne and Fammenne. The dominant farming system types are grazing livestock system specialised in milk or meat production, depending on the region. The average livestock density is less than 2.0 LU/ha. Over 60% of UAA is used as permanent grassland. The strength of the farm system approach methodology is the possibility of producing a map at the NUTS 5 level with an accurate description of the farm systems. The methodology can be improved by crosschecking the results with regional experts and getting feedback on the thresholds and the weighting of the indicators. The weaknesses of the farm system approach methodology are mainly due to the way agricultural practices are modelled. The lack of comprehensive and reliable data on landscape elements and grassland management hampers further validation of HNV farmland identification results. A development of additional relevant surveys is therefore recommended. An attempt at assessing the applicability of the FSA for HNV farmland identification was undertaken for the Czech Republic. Statistical data on farming practices are still incomplete and insufficient to build the methodology similar to the Walloon Region FSA. Conversely, biodiversity and habitat data are abundant and of high quality and currently are the best datasets for HNV farmland identification in the Czech Republic.

Book Improving Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Improving Natural Resource Management written by Timothy C. Haas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-01-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decision to implement environmental protection options is a political one. These, and other political and social decisions affect the balance of the ecosystem and how the point of equilibrium desired is to be reached. This book develops a stochastic, temporal model of how political processes influence and are influenced by ecosystem processes and looks at how to find the most politically feasible plan for managing an at-risk ecosystem. Finding such a plan is accomplished by first fitting a mechanistic political and ecological model to a data set composed of observations on both political actions that impact an ecosystem and variables that describe the ecosystem. The parameters of this fitted model are perturbed just enough to cause human behaviour to change so that desired ecosystem states occur. This perturbed model gives the ecosystem management plan needed to reach desired ecosystem states. To construct such a set of interacting models, topics from political science, ecology, probability, and statistics are developed and explored. Key features: Explores politically feasible ways to manage at-risk ecosystems. Gives agent-based models of how social groups affect ecosystems through time. Demonstrates how to fit models of population dynamics to mixtures of wildlife data. Presents statistical methods for fitting models of group behaviour to political action data. Supported by an accompanying website featuring datasets and JAVA code. This book will be useful to managers and analysts working in organizations charged with finding practical ways to sustain biodiversity or the physical environment. Furthermore this book also provides a political roadmap to help lawmakers and administrators improve institutional environmental management decision making.

Book High Nature Value Farming in Europe

Download or read book High Nature Value Farming in Europe written by Rainer Oppermann and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "High Nature Value (HNV) farming is inherently valuable for biodiversity and forms a living cultural and natural heritage. HNV farmland comprises semi-natural pastures, meadows and orchards, as well as species-rich arable land, and often retains a wealth of landscape features. HNV farming is present in all European countries, with a diversity of types and extent. Apart from being the cornerstone of European farmland biodiversity, these types of farming provide a multitude of other services for society, including sustainable rural economies, and the rich social fabric and character of Europe's landscapes. The environmental, socio-cultural and territorial significance of HNV farming is increasingly recognised, but greater awareness is needed amongst policy makers and the wider public. This book presents an overview of HNV farming across 35 European countries, describing the main characteristics and presenting examples of farming systems, farms and farmers."--Publisher.

Book Initial Development and Validation of Assessments for Predicting Disenrollment of Four Year Scholarship Recipients from the Reserve Officer Training Corps

Download or read book Initial Development and Validation of Assessments for Predicting Disenrollment of Four Year Scholarship Recipients from the Reserve Officer Training Corps written by Daniel J. Putka and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is an essential commissioning source for the U.S. Army. ROTC has recently produced the majority of the Army's new Officers and yields Officers that eventually reach the highest ranks. Analyses have indicated that Officers graduating from the four-year ROTC scholarship program tend to be more likely than their non-scholarship ROTC, U.S. Military Academy (USMA), and Officer Candidate School (OCS) counterparts to leave after their initial Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO). Furthermore, relative to non-scholarship Cadets, four-year scholarship Cadets tend to be less likely to complete the ROTC program and become commissioned Officers. Data collected for the current project showed that approximately 10.3% of four-year scholarship freshmen in 2007 disenrolled between their freshman and sophomore years. The primary purpose of the current project was to develop and validate a new measure that would improve the prediction of ROTC continuance for four-year scholarship recipients. The long-term objective of this project is to provide the foundation for future longitudinal research that examines the impact of the new measures for predicting ROTC program completion, commissioning, and career continuance in the Army. This report describes the development of the Cadet Background and Experience Form (CBEF) and its initial validation for predicting disenrollment criteria."--Stinet.
