Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Valerius, Vol. 1 of 2: A Roman Story My father, as on all have heard, had come with his logion into this is and, and married a lady of British blood, some years before the first arrival of the great Agricola. In the wars of that illustrious commander, during the reigns of Vespasian and Titus, he had the good fortune to find many Opportunities of distinguishing imself but when his general was recalled to the capital by the mean jealousy of Domitian he retired from public life, and de termined to spend the remainder of his days in peace, on the lands which belonged to him (chiefly in right of his wife) here in Britain. He laid the foundations of the house in which I have now the pleasure of receiving you; and here, in the cultivation of his fields and in the super intendence of my education, he found abundant employ ment for the energies of a very active, though by no means an ambitious mind. Early in the reign of Trajan, he died, after being confined to his apartment for a few days by an illness which neither my mother nor myself considered as seriously dangerous, till the very evening of its termination. Our grief knew at first no bounds and well might it be so, for never did either Roman or British dwelling lament the departure of a more generous, kind, and affectionate master. My mother, who, in wedding him, had offended the greater part of her own kindred, now that he was gone, had no tie to bind her affections to the earth, excepting myself, her only child, who had scarcely yet entered the threshold of manhood. In my society, therefore, her only hope of human comfort re sided; while I, on my part, loved her with strong and undivided filial love, of which (however that circumstance may be counterbalanced by other advantages) I have never seen any examples among sons educated at a dis tance from the unwearied eye of parental affection. Book Memorable Deeds and Sayings

Download or read book Memorable Deeds and Sayings written by Valerius Maximus and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1998 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valerius Maximus stands alone as an extant prose author of the early principate who devoted specific interest to the Romans' attitude to religion. In eight chapters he presents a variety of material selected from earlier authors, such as Cicero, Livy, and Varro, to illustrate central areas of Roman religious thought and practice: augury, omens, dreams, and miracles. Valerius has not been translated into English since 1678 and there has never been a detailed commentary on his work in any language. With the growing interest in the non-Judaeo-Christian religions of the Mediterranean world and scholars recognizing that Roman religion should not be approached with Judaeo-Christian presuppositions or through the filter of the Christian Fathers, Valerius Maximus gives us an opportunity to see an unexceptional pagan speaking about his religion.

And although I must confess to you that I obeyed not this silent guidance without considerable fear, yet I strove as well as I could to control myself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a full commentary on the first book of Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, an epic which has received increased attention in the last few decades, as may be seen from two recent editions (1997 and 2003). Its first aim is to clarify the text, which is sometimes rather difficult and, in places, still not established with certainty. Apart from this philological aspect, the literary merits of the poem have also been taken into account.

Book excerpt: In spite of an increased interest over the last ten years in the 1st century AD Roman poet Valerius Flaccus, involving the production of several commentaries, part of his work Argonautica was still lacking a modern commentary. This book gives a full philological and literary commentary of the turbulent book VI of the Argonautica. The Silver Latin author's peculiar phraseology and choice of words is highlighted. Where possible the poem is interpreted in the context of the other Silver Latin epic poets.

Book excerpt: Guy Gavriel Kay, the international bestselling and multiple award-winning author of The Fionavar Tapestry, brings his unique storytelling imagination to an alternate Byzantine world… Sarantium is the golden city: holy to the faithful, exalted by the poets, jewel of the world and heart of an empire. Caius Crispus, known as Crispin, is a master mosaicist, creating beautiful art with colored stones and glass. Still grieving the loss of his family, he lives only for his craft—until an imperial summons draws him east to the fabled city. Bearing with him a Queen’s secret mission and seductive promise, and a talisman from an alchemist, Crispin crosses a land of pagan ritual and mortal danger, confronting legends and dark magic. Once in Sarantium, with its taverns and gilded sanctuaries, chariot races and palaces, intrigues and violence, Crispin must find his own source of power in order to survive. He finds it, unexpectedly, high on the scaffolding of his own greatest creation.

Book Practical Ethics for Roman Gentlemen

Download or read book Practical Ethics for Roman Gentlemen written by Clive Skidmore and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popularity of the work of Valerius Maximus during the Middle Ages and Renaissance was due to its value as a source of moral exhortation and guidance: the work was as relevant to the readers of those times as it had been to Valerius' contemporaries in the first century AD. Practical Ethics for Roman Gentlemen demonstrates that the purpose of Valerius' work was to promote a system of morality based upon historical precedent that was both traditional and authoritative to the educated classes for whom he wrote. Practical Ethics for Roman Gentlemen offers a re-definition of the purpose of Valerius' work and totally new conclusions about its predecessors, form and audience. The book is not confined to an examination of Valerius' work in isolation, but also examines earlier forms of exemplary literature, questions of how Roman literature was communicated to its audience, and presents an entirely new theory on the identity of Valerius Maximus the author.

Book Avenger of Rome

Download or read book Avenger of Rome written by Douglas Jackson and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the follow-up to Defender of Rome, Valerius Verrens is sent on a mission by the deranged Nero against a man he greatly admires Emperor Nero's grip on power is weakening. In every shadow he sees an enemy, and like a cornered animal, he lashes out at every perceived threat. His paranoia settles on the figure of Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo, Rome's greatest general who leads the imperial legions in the East. Is Corbulo preparing to march against Rome and take the purple? Gaius Valerius Verrens, Hero of Rome, is ordered to Antioch with the power of life and death over Corbulo, a soldier he worships. There he finds that word of his mission has preceded him, and every man's hand is turned against him. But Corbulo's eyes are not on Rome, but on a new threat to the Empire's border. The Parthian King of Kings, Vologases, is marching to war, and if not stopped he might overwhelm the entire Roman east. Valerius marches at Corbulo's side. Outnumbered they make a stand in the barren wastes beyond the Tigris to meet Vologases in an epic contest of military might and ingenuity that will decide the fate of the Empire. And while he fights for the Empire, and for his own survival on the battlefield, Valerius must decide whether to complete his mission, or risk incurring his Emperor's dangerous wrath.
