Seeking a path around territorial restrictions imposed in a shaky peace with an unseen race humans call the Necromancers, Task Force RF-19.2 has twice blundered into the path of a second alien species’ invasion force on its way to Earth, answering a challenge of honor by mortal combat from its own enemy. Now, beaten and seriously mauled, the remnants of Task Force RF-19 and its fleet have retreated to a pre-established emergency rendezvous, a planet known as DeGeller 5, only to meet other human forces fleeing Earth after this new enemy’s cleansing bombardment of their Ancient Battlefield. Physical appearances aside, the two enemies are almost total technological opposites, one side wholeheartedly embracing technology, the other wholeheartedly rejecting it. The situation becomes even more convoluted when the human refugees receive a request for military assistance from a third race, enslaved to one of the two enemies. Against this backdrop 2nd Lt. Zhou Wen discovers he is the only heir to humanity’s imperial throne; he must face a rebellious Mother Church, the suffocating imperial bureaucracy, his doubts about the succession and his claim to the throne, all while returning to Earth to confront two mortal enemies hellbent on destroying each other. Book Greek Tragedy and the British Theatre 1660 1914

Download or read book Greek Tragedy and the British Theatre 1660 1914 written by Edith Hall and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lavishly illustrated book offers the first full, interdisciplinary investigation of the historical evidence for the presence of ancient Greek tragedy in the post-Restoration British theatre, where it reached a much wider audience - including women - than had access to the original texts. Archival research has excavated substantial amounts of new material, both visual and literary, which is presented in chronological order. But the fundamental aim is to explain why Greek tragedy, which played an elite role in the curricula of largely conservative schools and universities, was magnetically attractive to political radicals, progressive theatre professionals, and to the aesthetic avant-garde. All Greek has been translated, and the book will be essential reading for anyone interested in Greek tragedy, the reception of ancient Greece and Rome, theatre history, British social history, English studies, or comparative literature.

Book excerpt: For the first time in e-book format, a retelling of Romeo and Juliet from a master of dark fantasy. In the land of Santa Verensa, the great aristocratic Houses thrive on vendetta. Although their feuds are rooted in politics, generations of grievances have made the conflict dangerously petty and bitterly personal—a society where people live and die by the Name they bear. Romulan Montargo, heir to his family, revels in the feud. Meanwhile, Iuletta Chenti, the only child of Chenti Primo, the family’s patriarch, has spent her life sheltered. The Montargos and the Chentis have hated each other for decades, but when Iuletta first sets eyes on Romulan, she knows they are meant to be together. Determined to win his affection, she casts a charm on him to draw him to her, and the two fall in love. But Iuletta is already betrothed to the Belmorio heir, and her temperamental cousin Leopardo hates the Montargos with a murderous passion. If the young lovers are to be together, they must defy their families and defy their fates, reclaiming their chance at a happy ending. Tanith Lee beautifully reimagines Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of star-crossed lovers and bloody revenge with an added fantasy twist.

Book The Horror Plays of the English Restoration

Download or read book The Horror Plays of the English Restoration written by Anne Hermanson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decade after the Restoration of Charles II, a disturbing group of tragedies, dubbed by modern critics the horror or the blood-and-torture villain tragedies, burst onto the London stage. Ten years later they were gone - absorbed into the partisan frenzy which enveloped the theatre at the height of the Exclusion Crisis. Despite burgeoning interest, until now there has been no full investigation into why these deeply unsettling plays were written when they were and why they so fascinated audiences for the period that they held the stage. The author’s contention is that the genre of horror gains its popularity at times of social dislocation. It reflects deep schisms in society, and English society was profoundly unsettled and in a (delayed) state of shock from years of social upheaval and civil conflict. Through recurrent images of monstrosity, madness, venereal disease, incest and atheism, Hermanson argues that the horror dramatists trope deep-seated and unresolved anxieties - engaging profoundly with contemporary discourse by abreacting the conspiratorial climate of suspicion and fear. Some go as far as to question unequivocally the moral and political value of monarchy, vilifying the office of kingship and pushing ideas of atheism further than in any drama produced since Seneca. This study marks the first comprehensive investigation of these macabre tragedies in which playwrights such as Nathaniel Lee, Thomas Shadwell, Elkanah Settle, Thomas Otway and the Earl of Rochester take their audience on an exploration of human iniquity, thrusting them into an examination of man’s relationship to God, power, justice and evil.
