Book excerpt: A life lesson that all parents want their children to learn: It’s OK to make a mistake. In fact, hooray for mistakes! A mistake is an adventure in creativity, a portal of discovery. A spill doesn’t ruin a drawing—not when it becomes the shape of a goofy animal. And an accidental tear in your paper? Don’t be upset about it when you can turn it into the roaring mouth of an alligator. An award winning, best-selling, one-of-a-kind interactive book, Beautiful Oops! shows young readers how every mistake is an opportunity to make something beautiful. A singular work of imagination, creativity, and paper engineering, Beautiful Oops! is filled with pop-ups, lift-the-flaps, tears, holes, overlays, bends, smudges, and even an accordion “telescope”—each demonstrating the magical transformation from blunder to wonder.

Book Crash Landing

Download or read book Crash Landing written by Shane Manilal and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beauty of being human is that we each have our own minds. Yes, we do live in a routinely trained society, where we are shaped in a sense, but does that affect the true you? Surely, we can each, as the cliché goes, ‘make up our own minds’? Writing this book, with just one finger of my now main left hand, my mind ventured on its own tangent, which made me the happy person I now am. Reflecting on my own life story shaped and formed me, especially my totalitarian acceptance of humanity as one species as I answer the question in the title. Maybe reading it will send your own mind into a place where it is happy, and you find yourself, or maybe it does not? That is the actual essence of human prosperity—our willingness to adapt and use whatever we come across, or not use it. It’s our own choice to make. Join me as I fill your mind with my story, and then you can make up your mind about your own story. Love & Light, Shane

Download or read book One Jump Ahead written by Jonathan Schaeffer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s hard to believe that it’s been over a decade since One Jump Ahead: Challenging Human Supremacy at Checkers was published. I’m delighted to have the oppor- nity to update and expand the book. The ?rst edition ended on a sad note and that was re?ected in the writing. It is now eleven years later and the project has come to a satisfying conclusion. Since its inception, the checkers project has consumed eighteen years of my life— twenty if you count the pre-CHINOOK and post-solving work. It’s hard for me to believe that I actually stuck with it for that long. My wife, Steph, would probably have something witty to say about my obsessive behavior. Rereading the book after a decade was dif?cult for me. When I originally wrote One Jump Ahead, I vowed to be candid in my telling of the story. That meant being honest about what went right and what went wrong. I have been criticized for being hard on some of the characters. That may be so, but I hope everyone will agree that the person receiving the most criticism was, justi?ably, me. I tried to be balanced in the storytelling, re?ecting things as they really happened and not as some sanitized everyone-lived-happily-ever-after tale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by two former nannies, Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, The Nanny Diaries deftly punctures the glamour of Manhattan's upper class. Now a major motion picture starring Scarlett Johansson and Laura Linney. Wanted: One young woman to take care of four-year-old boy. Must be cheerful, enthusiastic and selfless--bordering on masochistic. Must relish sixteen-hour shifts with a deliberately nap-deprived preschooler. Must love getting thrown up on, literally and figuratively, by everyone in his family. Must enjoy the delicious anticipation of ridiculously erratic pay. Mostly, must love being treated like fungus found growing out of employers Hermès bag. Those who take it personally need not apply. Who wouldn't want this job? Struggling to graduate from NYU and afford her microscopic studio apartment, Nanny takes a position caring for the only son of the wealthy X family. She rapidly learns the insane amount of juggling involved to ensure that a Park Avenue wife who doesn't work, cook, clean, or raise her own child has a smooth day. When the Xs' marriage begins to disintegrate, Nanny ends up involved way beyond the bounds of human decency or good taste. Her tenure with the X family becomes a nearly impossible mission to maintain the mental health of their four-year-old, her own integrity and, most importantly, her sense of humor. Over nine tense months, Mrs. X and Nanny perform the age-old dance of decorum and power as they test the limits of modern-day servitude.

Book Ridiculously Hopeful

Download or read book Ridiculously Hopeful written by Maleah Stephens and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Maleah’s pregnancy, she and her husband, Scott, received news no parent expects—a congenital heart defect diagnosis for their son that rocked their world. Without medical intervention, the condition would cost their son his life. Scott and Maleah found themselves at a crossroads: choose fear or faith. In Ridiculously Hopeful, Maleah illustrates the benefits available to you in choosing to walk by faith. She offers hope, encouragement, wisdom, and insight into deepening your relationship with Jesus Christ. She offers testimony to the power of prayer, unity found within the body of Christ, and an awareness that miracles—both big and small—occur today. She illuminates the transformative nature behind the Biblical truths of believing, seeking, and receiving even when answers and explanations don’t exist. Ridiculously Hopeful challenges the world’s way, which often breeds fear and anxiety. Maleah suggests a better approach: holding fast to hope and a confident expectation of good found in Jesus Christ during a period of uncertainty. She provides practical applications you can apply to transform your outlook and strengthen your relationship with Jesus amidst any difficult situation in your life.

Book The Cultural Experience

Download or read book The Cultural Experience written by David W. McCurdy and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2004-11-03 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cultural Experience has helped generations of undergraduates discover the excitement of ethnographic research through participation in relatively familiar cultures in North American society. Grounded in the interviewing-based ethnographic technique known as ethnosemantics, the latest edition continues to treat ethnography as a discovery process. Students are taught how to set up an ethnographic field study, choose a microculture, and find and approach an informant, as well as how to ask ethnographic questions, record data, and organize and analyze what they have learned. Detailed instruction on how to write an ethnography is also provided. The guidelines are followed by ten short but substantive, well-written student ethnographies on such microcultures as exotic dancing, firefighting, pest extermination, and the work of midwives and police detectives. The Second Edition of this popular classroom volume includes boxed inserts that offer suggestions to aid in the research process, material on how to use observation and narratives with the ethnosemantic approach, an emphasis on how to find cultural themes and adaptive challenges by analyzing ethnographic field data, and extensive strategies for writing the final ethnographic paper. It also presents a comprehensive treatment of ethical responsibilities as well as a discussion of the significance of ethnographic research and its applications in the workplace.

Book The Greatest Love Story Never Told

Download or read book The Greatest Love Story Never Told written by Richard Orion and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is based on a true love story that spanned almost two decades. The names and places have been changed to protect the privacy of the individuals involved in this affair. The chronological sequence of events has been maintained for continuity. All the stories and experiences are based on facts. This book is about a love story that was kept secret for 18 years and perhaps shouldve remained a secret. The first book related to this love story was a book of poems entitled Somewhere, Sometime, Somehow: Love Poems and Short Stories published in 2008 by this author and Xlibris. For the perceptive reader of this book one can trace the ups and downs of our love relationship. These 18 years were filled with robust love and passion for each other. Perhaps it was fantasy; perhaps it was the most real thing we will ever experience. The heartbreaking part of this love affair is that I am not really sure my lover ever really understood or appreciated my profound and unconditional love for her. I opened my heart to her through poetry and thoughtful letters, but she rarely showed me what was in her heart. Perhaps it was a one-sided love affair, but I surely think and hope not. I was convinced that she truly loved me through her words and actions. At least I experienced a pure love that I had only dreamed was possible. The story is told mainly through the exchange of letters and emails to each other. Perhaps readers can experience and hopefully feel the deep love we felt for each other.

Book Mix of Bricks Valentines

Download or read book Mix of Bricks Valentines written by G.W. Sok and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G.W. Sok co-founded of the internationally acclaimed independent Dutch music group The Ex in 1979. He became the singer and lyricist, more or less by coincidence, since he wrote the occasional poem and nobody else wanted to sing. At the same time he turned himself into a graphic designer of record sleeves, posters, and books. Together with The Ex he was awarded the Dutch Pop Prize of 1991. The band is well known for their energetic live performances, inventive music, and politically outspoken and thought-provoking lyrics. After 1,400 concerts in Holland and abroad, and 25 record albums later, G.W. Sok decided to leave the group at the end of 2008. A Mix of Bricks & Valentines showcases the lyrics G.W. Sok wrote during his three-decade period of Ex-istence. More than 250 songs of agitprop lyrics, poetry, and rantings are included along with an introduction by the author discussing his development as a writer. A foreword by English journalist, author, and musician John Robb (the Membranes, Punk: An Oral History and Death to Trad Rock) puts the work of G.W. Sok into perspective. A Mix of Bricks & Valentines is written with a sharp pen; provocative, creative, and witty, everything punk and art intended to be from the start. And yes, it can be quite loud at times, too.
