Download or read book Tirant Lo Blanc written by Joanot Martorell and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2013-09-04 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated by David H. Rosenthal Here is a recovered Renaissance classic, a Catalan novel of chivalry done into English for the first time by a gifted poet and translator. Cervantes singles out Tirant lo Blanc for very special praise in Don Quixote—in the scene in which the don’s friends, eager to save his sanity, are making a bonfire of the romances of chivalry which have constituted his sole intellectual and spiritual nourishments. Cervantes makes a pointed exception of this work, putting into the mouth of a character the suggestion that the book deserves to remain in print throughout the ages. So it has—and now it can be read in David H. Rosenthal’s lively English. Tirant lo Blanc presents the life of the Renaissance nobility: politics, lovemaking, and war. The hero participates in all these activities with a great deal of dash and good humor, there is much excellent conversation along the way, and by the time the story has come to its satisfying conclusion, the modern reader is convinced that life was quite as complex 500 years ago as it is today—and, for the European nobility, perhaps a good deal more entertaining.
Download or read book EU Accession and Spanish Regional Development written by Carolyn Marie Dudek and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policymakers saw European Community membership as a way for Spain to secure democracy and promote economic development throughout the country. Nevertheless, regional economic disparities still persist in Spain almost twenty years after it entered the Community, despite significant European allocation of funds to remedy underdevelopment. How did the policies of the European Union impact Spain? What lessons can new EU members learn from Spain's experience within the European Union? Using rich empirical evidence and an innovative comparative analysis, this book examines the regional experiences of Galicia and the Valencian Community in Spain. The political dynamics and persistence of clientelism, which affect policymaking and policy implementation within each region, are particularly considered. These cases provide new insight to explain why regional economic differences persist in Spain despite efforts to alleviate them. Historically grounded and detailed, this study analyzes the process of accession and the ignored long-term ramifications of accession negotiations and treaties, it focuses on the often-overlooked contradiction between European regulations and regional development policies, and questions whether EU membership has been as beneficial as policymakers thought it would be.
Download or read book Strategic Approaches to Regional Development written by Iryna Kristensen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence and persistence of regional disparities between European regions require context-tailored policies to promote structural change. This book explores the congruence between place-based development and regional competitiveness in the EU context. Drawing on a range of social science disciplines, this book unpicks the complexity of regional transformation processes, aiming to enhance the applicability and transferability of theoretical approaches to innovation and place-based regional development in diverse European territorial settings. The contributors have a particular focus on less-favoured regions and on the application of Smart Specialisation – a strategic approach to innovation-based regional development – to the issues at hand. The book comes at a critical moment, meeting the growing demand of academics, practitioners and policymakers with an interest in promoting regional economic growth and well-being.

Download or read book Introduction to the Numerical Modeling of Groundwater and Geothermal Systems written by Jochen Bundschuh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 1373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the scientific fundamentals of groundwater and geothermal systems. In a simple and didactic manner the different water and energy problems existing in deformable porous rocks are explained as well as the corresponding theories and the mathematical and numerical tools that lead to modeling and solving them. This approach provides the reader with a thorough understanding of the basic physical laws of thermoporoelastic rocks, the partial differential equations representing these laws and the principal numerical methods, which allow finding approximate solutions of the corresponding mathematical models. The book also presents the form in which specific useful models can be generated and solved. The text is introductory in the sense that it explains basic themes of the systems mentioned in three areas: engineering, physics and mathematics. All the laws and equations introduced in this book are formulated carefully based on fundamental physical principles. This way, the reader will understand the key importance of mathematics applied to all the subjects. Simple models are emphasized and solved with numerous examples. For more sophisticated and advanced models the numerical techniques are described and developed carefully. This book will serve as a synoptic compendium of the fundamentals of fluid, solute and heat transport, applicable to all types of subsurface systems, ranging from shallow aquifers down to deep geothermal reservoirs. The book will prove to be a useful textbook to senior undergraduate and graduate students, postgraduates, professional geologists and geophysicists, engineers, mathematicians and others working in the vital areas of groundwater and geothermal resources.

Download or read book The Sustainable City VI written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addresses the multi-disciplinary aspects of urban planning, a result of the increasing size of cities, the amount of resources and services required and the complexity of modern society. Innovative tools are required for identifying the high complexity of contemporary cities. It is necessary to provide a more scientific approach to urban studies, inspired by Prigogine's theories of dissipative structures, and to highlight relations between different systems and between systems and the environment. The challenge of placing sustainable contemporary cities lies in considering the dynamics of urban systems, exchange of energy and matter and the function and maintenance of ordered structures directly or indirectly supplied and maintained by natural systems. The task of researchers, aware of the complexity of the contemporary city, is to increase the capacity to manage human activities pursuing welfare and prosperity in sustainable cities.

Download or read book Dams and Reservoirs Societies and Environment in the 21st Century written by Luis Berga and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2006-02-15 with total page 1373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resources stored by dams and reservoirs play an essential role in water resource management, hydropower and flood control. Where there is an extensive network of dam infrastructures, dams have made a major contribution to economic and social development, providing considerable storage capacity per capita. However, dams and reservoirs may also have an important social and environmental impact, and should be studied within the framework of integrated water resource management and sustainable development. Dams and Reservoirs, Societies and Environment in the 21st Century presents the latest research on the role played by dams and reservoirs in 21st century societies, in developed, emergent and developing countries. It analyses the viability of dams and suggests alternative solutions from a holistic perspective, considering the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects. Other issues covered include the social acceptability of dams, public involvement and dam awareness. The book covers subjects ranging from dam engineering, through the benefits and drawbacks of dams, to their social and environmental impact, and contains numerous case studies of the constructive contributions that reservoirs have made to water development and management. The book is a valuable resource for professional and dam engineers, water managers, governmental organizations and commercial enterprises responsible for dam development and management.
