Book A Valedictory Address on the Art of Examining the Sick

Download or read book A Valedictory Address on the Art of Examining the Sick written by James Conquest Cross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Valedictory Address, on the Art of Examining the Sick: Delivered to the Graduates of the Medical College of Ohio, on the First Day of March, 1836 Why is this the case? Because the science of diagnosis and the art of examining the sick are not sufficiently studied. Without a thorough acquaintance with the former, it would be preposterous to pretend to practice the latter. While the latter teaches you merely how to prosecute an examination, the former enables you to interpret the physical and vocal signs furnished by the patient. To make a suc cessinl practical application of diagnosis your examination must be conducted with strict regard to some settled and natural method. This, in truth, is so absolutely requisite that should you venture, irre spective of method, to prosecute an examination in the presence of an educated and enlightened physician, he would denounce you as an awkward, illiterate and a blundering quack. It is the condu'ct Of the physician, in the discharge of this duty, that announces in language not to be misinterpreted, whether he should be detested as an empy ric or respected as an intelligent and accomplished physician. A closer intimacy converts the towering forests into stunted shrubbery, and those cerulean tints which charmed the eye, dissolve into the misty clouds which crown the mountain's top. Yet it is not all delusion - amid much that is fading in the landscape there still remains the cheerful vale and happy cot on the hillside. The steady and persevering, though he may not gain all to which his young and ardent fancy had aspired, seldom fails to secure a rich reward of honor as well as a competence that will satisfy his maturer expectations.
