Book excerpt: Vale Darrow likes routine. He likes knowing what will happen on each of his days, and isn’t fond of surprises or upheaval of any kind. He lives alone in a house he loves. He expects to always be alone because he isn’t an easy person to know. He never expects that to change, until it does. After serving for many years the Companion to the Oracle dies. The Oracle reaches out, in his grief, touching on an unsuspecting Vale. With that touch, everything changes. Vale swears he will not give in to the Oracle if chosen as Companion. Will the Oracle force him to accept a life cut off from everything and everyone he loves? Or will Vale choose death rather than submit to the Oracle’s whims? Please see inside for warnings!

The record wins, defeats, attendances and plenty of facts about the club are listed in great detail, plus the answer to many questions such as what links David Beckham and Bobby Charlton to Port Vale? Also featured are a wide range of statistics, quotes and biographies from the club's history, making it a must for any fan. Can you really afford not to own a copy?

Book Critical Approaches to Welcome to Night Vale

Download or read book Critical Approaches to Welcome to Night Vale written by Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With well over one-hundred episodes, the podcast Welcome to Night Vale has spawned several international live tours, two novels set in the Night Vale universe, and an extensive volume of fan fiction and commentary. However, despite its immense popularity, Welcome to Night Vale has received almost no academic scrutiny. This edited collection of scholarly essays—the very first of its kind on a podcast—attempts to redress this lack of attention to Night Vale by bringing together an international group of scholars from different disciplines to consider the program’s form, themes, politics, and fanbase. After a thorough introduction by the volume’s editor, Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock, the eight contributors not only offer close analysis of Night Vale, but use the program as the impetus for broader explorations of new media, gender, the constitution of identity, the construction of place, and the human relationship to meaning and the non-human.

Book Railways and Industry on the Vale of Neath

Download or read book Railways and Industry on the Vale of Neath written by John Hodge and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2024-06-30 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the Vale of Neath line, the eastern portion of which was originally the Taff Vale Extension line, opened in the mid 19th Century, and taking in all the locations in this first book. It was unique in South Wales railway history as it was the only line running east to west across several of the valley lines which ran north to south, with connecting junctions into and from each. The line was famous for the iconic Crumlin Viaduct, hailed as one of the best examples of technological achievement during the Industrial Revolution and lasting 107 years until the line was closed as a through route in 1964. The line ran through several important valley towns, creating need for High Level and Low Level stations at several locations. The standard gauge Taff Vale Extension originally ran as far as Mountain Ash where it met and amalgamated with the broad gauge Vale of Neath line from Neath to Aberdare and Merthyr, locations that will be dealt with in future volumes. Fortunately the line was well photographed as the coverage given to each location will show.

Book The Delamere Saga the Untold Story of Vale Royal Abbey

Download or read book The Delamere Saga the Untold Story of Vale Royal Abbey written by Geoffrey Hebdon and published by Interactive Publications. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This colourful and thoroughly researched history of the Lord Delamere branch of the British aristocracy focuses on the famous Vale Royal Abbey in Cheshire, England. The Cholmondeley family, who owned the Abbey throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, are described in lavish and intimate detail as they maneuvered to maintain, through three generations, their status as a leading family in the United Kingdom. Beginning in the late 17th century, we follow Charles Cholmondeley as he served as a member of the King’s army in Canada in the war against the French. Part I witnesses the ubiquitous Thomas Cholmondeley who purchased the title ‘Lord (Baron) Delamere’ for £5000 from the British crown in 1821. Part II covers the 2nd Lord Delamere, Hugh Cholmondeley, who led a very sad and difficult life, and experienced the deterioration of Vale Royal. Part III reviews the life of Hugh Cholmondeley, Jnr., 3rd Lord Delamere, his abandonment of Vale Royal Abbey and his relocation to East Africa. Narcissistic Hugh was part of the notorious “happy valley crowd” of Kenya and their lives of debauchery, sex and drugs. The Vale Royal Abbey lives on today, a national treasure and testament to the intriguing lives of those who occupied it over the centuries.
