Book Spanish Cinema Against Itself

Download or read book Spanish Cinema Against Itself written by Steven Marsh and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An extraordinary philosophical exploration of the political potential and continued political commitment of cinema today . . . An essential read.” —Patricia Keller, Associate Professor of Spanish and Comparative Literature, Cornell University Spanish Cinema Against Itself maps the evolution of Spanish surrealist and politically committed cinematic traditions from their origins in the 1930s—with the work of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí, experimentalist José Val de Omar, and militant documentary filmmaker Carlos Velo—through to the contemporary period. Framed by film theory this book traces the works of understudied and non-canonical Spanish filmmakers, producers, and film collectives to open up alternate, more cosmopolitan and philosophical spaces for film discussion. In an age of the post-national and the postcinematic, Steven Marsh’s work challenges conventional historiographical discourse, the concept of “national cinema,” and questions of form in cinematic practice. “In this exhilarating counter-history of experimental filmmaking in Spain, Steven Marsh takes up the politics of form, the trouble with film history, and the theoretical potential of haunting, discontinuity, and absence . . . Spanish Cinema Against Itself is an important intervention in Spanish film studies and, indeed, in the scholarship on world cinema.” —Rosalind Galt, Professor of Film Studies, King’s College London

Book Val Del Omar Overflow

Download or read book Val Del Omar Overflow written by José Val del Omar and published by Actar D. This book was released on 2011 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jose Val del Omar (Granada 1904-Madrid 1982) cannot be described as having had a very specific activity, although his main support was film. He belonged to a generation that believed cinema was an art in its own right, rather than as the opium of the people. On the other hand, if he must be linked to film, it is as an outside creator, with few existing works, at least with respect to the amount that is currently preserved. He was an eccentric in the world of Spanish cinematography, which was little given to experimentalism. Over time he has become a cult figure whose veneration is renewed and is constantly growing. The beginning of his creative career is linked to the collective experience of the Pedagogical Missions, one of the paradigmatic projects of Spanish culture during the Second Republic and one to which he remained faithful throughout his life. The present volume includes essays by Francisco Baena, Thomas Beard, Eugeni Bonet, Nicole Brenez, Javier Codesal, Victor Erice, Horacio Fernandez, Pedro G. Romero, Pedro Jimenez, Carlos Muguiro, Javier Ortiz-Echague, Manuel Palacio, Carmen Pardo, Gonzalo Saenz de Buruaga and Manuel Villegas."

Book The City Symphony Phenomenon

Download or read book The City Symphony Phenomenon written by Steven Jacobs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1920s and 1930s saw the rise of the city symphony, an experimental film form that presented the city as protagonist instead of mere decor. Combining experimental, documentary, and narrative practices, these films were marked by a high level of abstraction reminiscent of high-modernist experiments in painting and photography. Moreover, interwar city symphonies presented a highly fragmented, oftentimes kaleidoscopic sense of modern life, and they organized their urban-industrial images through rhythmic and associative montage that evoke musical structures. In this comprehensive volume, contributors consider the full 80 film corpus, from Manhatta and Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Grosstadt to lesser-known cinematic explorations.

Its the first book about Farocki that is neither a purely academic publication nor an exhibition catalogue. it brings together the most diverse of themes, tonalities and approaches: alongside a complete filmography and list of installations, there are 21 contributions that take a discursive (or use drawings to) look at Farocki's complex oeuvre. Additionally there are two key Farocki texts, previous reflections on his film and video work, and a new text he has written especially for this book, which begins quite biographically and underhandedly becomes a short history of the making of films and art in (West) Germany over the past 40 years. The themes discussed are as varied as the authors involved, with much focus on individual Farocki films, beginning with the early political, Marxist, educational films, via his cinema direct films and his essay films, that have become classics in the meantime, up To The films and installations, which For The most make use of found footage of the most varied types of image, such as amateur recordings, archive pictures, surveillance images, technical images and computer animations. Download or read book Spearhead of Logistics written by Benjamin King and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spearhead of Logistics is a narrative branch history of the U.S. Army's Transportation Corps, first published in 1994 for transportation personnel and reprinted in 2001 for the larger Army community. The Quartermaster Department coordinated transportation support for the Army until World War I revealed the need for a dedicated corps of specialists. The newly established Transportation Corps, however, lasted for only a few years. Its significant utility for coordinating military transportation became again transparent during World War II, and it was resurrected in mid-1942 to meet the unparalleled logistical demands of fighting in distant theaters. Finally becoming a permanent branch in 1950, the Transportation Corps continued to demonstrate its capability of rapidly supporting U.S. Army operations in global theaters over the next fifty years. With useful lessons of high-quality support that validate the necessity of adequate transportation in a viable national defense posture, it is an important resource for those now involved in military transportation and movement for ongoing expeditionary operations. This text should be useful to both officers and noncommissioned officers who can take examples from the past and apply the successful principles to future operations, thus ensuring a continuing legacy of Transportation excellence within Army operations. Additionally, military science students and military historians may be interested in this volume.
