Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Vaccination For the last twenty-two years I have been engaged in the practice and teaching of vaccination. The six chapters contain the substance of the six lectures I periodically deliver to my pupils, together with the incorporation of several papers which I have from time to time published in the periodicals, and now for the first time publish in book-form. The whole of the work was written before the final report of the Royal Commission on Vaccination was issued, except a short paragraph on page 3 and the completion of the report of the first case given on page 60. I am not, therefore, indebted to this for any information, and it may be taken, so far as I am concerned, as entirely. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tuberculin and Vaccine in Tubercular Affections: A Practical Guide for the Utilization of the Immune Response in General Practice I wish to express my appreciation of the works of those authors who have written so fully and convincingly on tuber culosis and tuberculin for what they have done to make my experience possible. As my book is merely a practical guide to the use of the immune response in tuberculosis I could not at every point tell whether my idea arises from my own experience or from the reading of the literature on this sub ject, and I did not interrupt my work to make the distino tion. So that if I failed to make frequent mention of those authorities in my work, it is not from lack of appreciation or from a desire to appear altogether original. Book Clinical Bacteriology and Vaccine Therapy for Veterinary Surgeons Classic Reprint

Download or read book Clinical Bacteriology and Vaccine Therapy for Veterinary Surgeons Classic Reprint written by William Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Bacteriology and Vaccine Therapy for Veterinary Surgeons IF Sir Almroth Wright's prophecy the physician of the future will be an immunizator - is true regarding the future attitude of the practitioner of human medicine towards sero vaccine therapy, I believe it may with equal truth be applied to the practitioner of veterinary medicine. Certainly there is as much scope for its application in the latter profession as in the former - nay, more: the human practitioner has difficulties and anxious problems to encounter which to the veterinary practitioner are unknown. Every medical man knows with what prejudice his patients look upon any new line of treatment, and particularly so if such treatment is being driven home at the point of the hypodermic needle. For the sake of his own reputation, he is often loath to rouse those latent feelings, with the result that he moves very cautiously sometimes too cautiously - to the detriment of his patient. Again, a doctor's patients are all possessed of a highly developed nervous system, where the influence of mind over matter is very pronounced, and where emotions and idiosyncrasies are greatly in evidence, requiring a strong personality and the comforting but forcible courage of the trusted physician to quieten; but all these qualifications sometimes avail little, the patient discarding the treatment without fair trial. Or, it may be by a sheer coincidence that after a dose of vaccine has been administered complications in the course of the disease supervene, and although they may have nothing whatever to do with the treatment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Value of Vaccination: A Non-Partisan Review of Its History and Results Vaccination became a question of public policy, when laws for its enforcement were enacted, and as long as people are taxed to support it, they have the common right of investigation. As a medical tenet, they might readily leave it to medical author ities to dispose of; but when the ingenuity of the law is invoked to make it obligatory, then the public have a right to know what they get for their money.
