Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vacations in Canada: A Handbook of Information for Tourists and Sportsmen The summer climate is superb - warm, sunny days, cool nights and pure, bracing, pine-scented air. Due to the long hours of sunshine combined with high altitude, and cool air, no part of the world is more suitable for sun treatments and sunshine clinics than Canada. Contrary to general belief the winter climate is also attractive. The keen, dry cold with brilliant sunshine reflected from the snow sets the blood tingling and adds zest to the many forms Of winter sport. Book Manufacturing National Park Nature

Download or read book Manufacturing National Park Nature written by J. Keri Cronin and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National parks occupy a prominent place in the Canadian imagination, yet we are only beginning to understand how their visual representation has shaped and continues to inform our perceptions of ecological issues and the natural world. J. Keri Cronin draws on historical and modern postcards, advertisements, and other images of Jasper National Park to trace how various groups and the tourism industry have used photography to divorce the park from real environmental threats and instead package it as a series of breathtaking vistas and adorable-looking animals. Manufacturing National Park Nature demonstrates that popular forms of picturing nature can have ecological implications that extend far beyond the frame of the image.

Book English Bloods

Download or read book English Bloods written by Frederick de la Fosse and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2004-08-25 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farming in the Canadian backwoods in the late 1800s was a prospect that enticed many young Englishmen to cross the Atlantic. One such fellow was Frederick de la Fosse, whose well-meaning uncle paid £100 per annum for his young nephew to serve as a farm pupil in the northern reaches of Muskoka. Some years later, de la Fosse, under the pseudonym of Roger Vardon, wrote an illuminating and humorous biographical account of the trials and tribulations of the "English Bloods," the local epithet attached to these young lads attempting to hone farming skills in a land never intended to be agricultural. And, in so doing, de la Fosse chronicles the realities of pioneer life in the area. In the original text, published in 1930, a number of names were changed to conceal identities of the local people. Editor Scott D. Shipman has spent over eight years researching the authentic names and overall background for this new augmented edition of English Bloods. The richly descriptive text written by the keenly observant and erudite de la Fosse is complemented by archival visuals and annotations for today’s reader. Frederick de la Fosse went on to become a public librarian in Peterborough in 1910.
