Book excerpt: In this riveting insider's chronicle, legendary Marine General "Brute" Krulak submits an unprecedented examination of U.S. Marines—their fights on the battlefield and off, their extraordinary esprit de corps. Deftly blending history with autobiography, action with analysis, and separating fact from fable, General Krulak touches the very essence of the Corps: what it means to be a Marine and the reason behind its consistently outstanding performance and reputation. Krulak also addresses the most basic but challenging question of all about the Corps: how does it manage to survive—even to flourish—despite overwhelming political odds and, as the general writes, ""an extraordinary propensity for shooting itself in the foot?"" To answer this question Krulak examines the foundation on which the Corps is built, a system of intense loyalty to God, to country, and to other Marines. He also takes a close look at Marines in war, offering challenging accounts of their experiences in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. In addition, he describes the Corps's relationship to other services, especially during the unification battles following World War II, and offers new insights into the decision-making process in times of crisis. First published in hardcover in 1984, this book has remained popular ever since with Marines of every rank.

Download or read book In Remembrance written by Margaret Hill and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s, a few volunteers at the Mary Ball Washington Museum (MBWM) in Lancaster, Virginia began collecting inscriptions and making brief location notes on the rapidly disappearing family cemeteries of Lancaster County. In early 1999, the compilers of this book began to complete the task by making an extensive search for family burial sites and adding inscriptions from church and community cemeteries. We naively said we would be finished by the end of that year! Clyde and Carolyn Ratcliffe "beat the bushes" to locate family cemeteries, some with a single gravestone. Peggy and John Hill transcribed stones in church and community cemeteries. We found ancient and modern flat table markers. We found ordinary markers with only birth and death dates. There were homemade, handlettered markers of cement and even a few made of wood. We found a few graves marked with statuary and many marked with obelisks. We hope we have found the grave marker that is of vital interest to you.

Book An Illustrated Guide to Virginia s Confederate Monuments

Download or read book An Illustrated Guide to Virginia s Confederate Monuments written by Timothy S. Sedore and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From well-known battlefields, such as Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Appomattox, to lesser-known sites, such as Sinking Spring Cemetery and Rude’s Hill, Sedore leads readers on a vivid journey through Virginia’s Confederate history. Tablets, monoliths, courthouses, cemeteries, town squares, battlefields, and more are cataloged in detail and accompanied by photographs and meticulous commentary. Each entry contains descriptions, fascinating historical information, and location, providing a complete portrait of each site. Much more than a visual tapestry or a tourist’s handbook, An Illustrated Guide to Virginia’s Confederate Monuments draws on scholarly and field research to reveal these sites as public efforts to reconcile mourning with Southern postwar ideologies. Sedore analyzes in depth the nature of these attempts to publicly explain Virginia’s sense of grief after the war, delving deep into the psychology of a traumatized area. From commemorations of famous generals to memories of unknown soldiers, the dead speak from the pages of this sweeping companion to history.

    Book Details:
  • Author : James W. Loewen
  • Publisher : The New Press
  • Release : 2019-09-24
  • ISBN : 1620974932
  • Pages : 482 pages

Download or read book Lies Across America written by James W. Loewen and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully updated and revised edition of the book USA Today called "jim-dandy pop history," by the bestselling, American Book Award–winning author "The most definitive and expansive work on the Lost Cause and the movement to whitewash history." —Mitch Landrieu, former mayor of New Orleans From the author of the national bestseller Lies My Teacher Told Me, a completely updated—and more timely than ever—version of the myth-busting history book that focuses on the inaccuracies, myths, and lies on monuments, statues, national landmarks, and historical sites all across America. In Lies Across America, James W. Loewen continues his mission, begun in the award-winning Lies My Teacher Told Me, of overturning the myths and misinformation that too often pass for American history. This is a one-of-a-kind examination of historic sites all over the country where history is literally written on the landscape, including historical markers, monuments, historic houses, forts, and ships. New changes and updates include: • a town in Louisiana that was the site of a major but now-forgotten enslaved persons' uprising • a totally revised tour of the memory and intentional forgetting of slavery and the Civil War in Richmond, Virginia • the hideout of a gang in Delaware that made money by kidnapping free blacks and selling them into slavery Entertaining and enlightening, Lies Across America also has a serious role to play in contemporary debates about white supremacy and Confederate memorials.
