Book Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities of V STOL Aircraft

Download or read book Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities of V STOL Aircraft written by James A. Franklin and published by AIAA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This text presents the principles of dynamics and control for vertical, short take-off landing (V/STOL) aircraft. It is the first book of its kind. It is intended for graduate students and professionals in aeronautics who have knowledge of linear systems analysis, aircraft static, dynamic stability, and control. The text begins with a discussion of V/STOL aircraft operations. Control strategies, equations of motion, longitudinal and lateral-directional flying qualities in both hover and forward flight, wind and turbulence responses, and control augmentation and cockpit displays are covered. Specific examples of the YAV-8B Harrier and XV-15 Tilt Rotor aircraft are used to illustrate actual V/STOL dynamic and control characteristics.

Book V STOL Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities

Download or read book V STOL Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities written by James A. Franklin and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents materials that constituted the lectures presented by the author as part of Course AA 234 Dynamics, Control, and Flying Qualities of V/STOL Aircraft that was taught in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. It covers representative operations of vertical and short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft, a discussion of the pilot's strategy in controlling these aircraft, the equations of motion pertinent to V/STOL tasks, and their application in the analysis of longitudinal and lateral-directional control in hover and forward flight. Following that development, which applies to the characteristics of the basic airframe and propulsion system, the text concludes with a discussion of the contributions of control augmentation in specific flight tasks and of the integration of modern electronic displays with these controls.

Book Soviet V STOL Aircraft

Download or read book Soviet V STOL Aircraft written by Michael J. Hirschberg and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important case study reports on the V/STOL development activities in the Soviet Union. As in the West, the Soviets also began using flying test rigs in the late 1950s. By combining the lift engines with modifications to existing engines, the Soviets were able to deploy the Yak-38 Forger only two years after the Harrier. The Forger was in service for 15 years before the political situation forced its retirement from service. Packed with illustrations, references, glossaries, and bibliographies, this case study is a necessary resource for the studies of V/STOL aircraft and systems designers.

Book Lift System Induced Aerodynamics of V STOL Aircrtaft in a Moving Deck Environment

Download or read book Lift System Induced Aerodynamics of V STOL Aircrtaft in a Moving Deck Environment written by James H. Kamman and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The propulsive lift system induced aerodynamics of multi-jet VSTOL aircraft configurations were experimentally evaluated over a moving deck and at static hover conditions. Several model configurations representative of advanced subsonic and supersonic VSTOL aircraft were tested. Dynamic jet-induced force and moment data were obtained for heaving, pitching, and rolling motions of a simulated seaborne landing platform over a range of heights, amplitudes, and frequencies. Configuration effects were assessed at both static hover and deck motion conditions, including the effects of wing height, fuselage contouring, lift improvement devices, and nozzle arrangement. In addition, tests were performed to separate the effects of deck motion on the fountain impingement forces. Empirical procedures were defined to aid in predicting the dynamic jet- induced forces and moment variations with deck motion. Configuration design and model testing guidelines for VSTOL aircraft are described. Recommendations are also made for further research to provide additional information required to develop generalized prediction procedures.

Download or read book Harrier II written by Lon Nordeen and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first Harrier strike fighter was introduced by the Royal Air Force in the late 1960s, it was hailed as a technological breakthrough with its speed, vertical, short takeoff and landing capability (V/STOL). Today, the Harrier II is one of the top weapons of choice for ground troops in Iraq and Afghanistan who need effective air support. This book chronicles the incredible development of this tactical fixed wing aircraft, a journey that, in the author's opinion, was successful solely because of the unswerving commitment of the U.S. Marine Corps. In tracing the Harrier II's history, Lon Nordeen highlights the teamwork, creativity, and innovation that went into the design, development, fielding, and operation of this unique aircraft. The story begins with the development of the U.S. Marine Corps air-ground team close air support concepts in the 1920s, on the battlefields of the Pacific in the Second World War and the Korean conflict. Later in Vietnam, efforts were directed at improving the aviators' response time to calls for air support. Seeing V/STOL tactical airplanes as the only practical solution to this problem, the Marine Corps received their first AV-8As in 1971 and then set out to improve the Harrier's capability. This is the Harrier II's story, including its near-cancellation in the late 1970s during the Carter Administration, developmental challenges in the early 1980s, international growth path with the addition of night attack capability and radar to its success in the Gulf War, Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. This book includes interviews and insights from those involved- from pilots and military commanders to engineers and production personnel and even tothose who opposed the program. It is the first book to be written about the Harrier II from the U.S. Marine Corps perspective that also discusses the selection and operational use of the aircraft by the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy.
