Elles témoignent aussi de l'inclination profonde de notre esprit : le désir naturel du vrai. Toutefois, une pensée claire, rigoureuse et véridique appelle la mise en place d'instruments adaptés. C'est l'étude de ces instruments qui est, ici, exposée, dans l'héritage d'une tradition vivante qui remonte aux Grecs. En effet, les différents "outils" de la raison, mis en forme pour la première fois par Aristote dans son Organon (l'Instrument), possèdent des vertus d'une grande efficacité pour conduire notre pensée. Les facilités d'accéder aux textes, de chercher et de transmettre des informations, jointes à la prolifération des moyens de communications, orales et écrites, multiplient les échanges et la diffusion des idées, des opinions, des prises de position et des avis de toutes sortes. Tout cela nous provoque en permanence à réfléchir, à juger, à débattre. La logique se dévoile alors comme une panoplie d'instruments rationnels, dirigeant et facilitant les opérations de l'intelligence : définir, diviser, questionner, énoncer, argumenter, démontrer, objecter, réfuter, convaincre, persuader... Autant d'actes sur lesquels nous ne réfléchissons guère et que nous accomplissons souvent plus intuitivement que rationnellement. Ajoutons que la diversification des savoirs, voire leur éclatement, laisse parfois les spécialistes en sciences (naturelles ou sociales) très démunis en dehors de leur domaine spécifique. Un grand besoin d'une méthode commune, dépassant les méthodologies spécifiques, mais capable de les intégrer sans les confondre, se fait alors jour. Mais ce besoin est de nature philosophique et la logique du bon sens ne suffit pas, c'est encore une logique de la pensée philosophique qui est nécessaire. Si tout art s'acquiert par apprentissage et exercice, la logique, art spéculatif, ne fait pas exception. Aussi, dans cet ouvrage, les illustrations et les applications concrètes alternent avec les exposés théoriques ; l'assimilation de ces derniers étant aidée par un glossaire de définitions de plus de deux cents termes. Ainsi l'étude des instruments qui permettent à la raison de procéder "avec ordre, facilité et sans erreur" (Thomas d'Aquin) est-elle située dans son milieu d'élection : la vie de l'intelligence.
