Book Uyghur Folk Lore and Legend

Download or read book Uyghur Folk Lore and Legend written by Various and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2009 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume you will find stories about One-eyed, Seven Horned Monsters that double as mothers-in-law, as well as Tricksters, Illusionists, Shape-shifters, Ogres and even the Origin of the Meaning of Fate itself. The Uyghur people have origins that are as ancient as the Han Chinese, if not older. Originating in central China, they were slowly pushed further west until they settled in the Tarim Basin. But the Uyghurs are not just limited to East Turkestan and can also be found inhabiting the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Smaller communities can also be found in Mongolia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Russia. Because they have travelled so far and have encountered so many different cultures, it is therefore not surprising that Uyghur Folk-Lore is extensive, which when woven together in such a volume, results in a rich tapestry that can only be pleasing for the reader. We invite you to curl up with this volume and indulge yourself in the fifty-nine tales and stories that stretch back in time, almost to the great flood itself. The Uyghurs are an ethnic minority, who like the Tibetans, have been fighting for their independence for generations. A percentage of the sales from this book will be donated to charities, schools and special causes.

Book THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW An American Literary Classic

Download or read book THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW An American Literary Classic written by Washington Irving and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a short story by American author Washington Irving. The Story was written while Irving was living abroad in Birmingham, England, and is among the earliest examples of enduring popular American fiction. The story is set in 1790 in the countryside around the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town (now historical Tarrytown, New York), in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow. A place renowned for its ghosts and haunting atmosphere. The most infamous spectre in the Hollow is the Headless Horseman, said to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper who lost his head during a battle of the American Revolutionary War. The tale’s protagonist, Ichabod Crane, is a lanky and extremely superstitious schoolmaster, who competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and only child of wealthy farmer Baltus Van Tassel. The two vie for Katrina's hand, with Brom playing a series of pranks on the jittery schoolmaster. The tension between the three is brought to a head on a placid autumn night, at the harvest party. He dances, partakes in the feast, and listens to ghostly legends told by the locals, but his true aim is to propose to Katrina. His intentions, however, are ill-fated. After departing the party, Ichabod rides home through the woods with a heavy heart. He passes several haunted spots, until he encounters a cloaked rider at an intersection in a putrid swamp. The teacher is horrified to discover that the rider’s head is not on his shoulders, but on his saddle. Ichabod rides for his life in a frantic race to the bridge, desperately goading his temperamental plow horse to gallop faster. To the pedagogue's horror, the ghoul clambers over the bridge, rears his horse, and hurls his severed head into Ichabod's terrified face. The next morning, Ichabod has mysteriously disappeared from town, leaving Katrina to marry Brom Bones…….

Book GYPSY FOLK TALES Book Two Illustrated Edition

Download or read book GYPSY FOLK TALES Book Two Illustrated Edition written by Francis Hinds Groome and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of Gypsy Folk Tales contains stories, tales and legends from Transylvania, Slovakia, Moravia, Bohemia, Poland, England, Wales and Scotland. This book is a treasure chest of 39 classic illustrated Gypsy Folklore stories and makes fascinating reading for those interested in folklore in general, but especially for those interested in the Roma people. Francis Hinds Groome collated and prepared this collection, making only few changes and remaining true to the original stories, so to let the written story enchant us as if it were being presented in the vernacular. In his various other works, Groome raises the point that Europe possibly owes a great deal of its folklore heritage to Gypsies, who brought tales from East to West. If this is the case, then even the most rooted of Europeans must attribute a portion of their culture to the Gypsy lifestyle. Simply stated, these stories are their stories, but in an earlier form. The stories have been recently illustrated by Dutch artist Maggie Gunzel whose art has stayed true to the stories themselves. So take some time out and curl up with this book. Be swept back in time to another place, where the carefree lifestyle of the Gypsy rules and the burdens of today are forgotten - albeit temporarily. In buying this book you will have donated towards the relief of the underprivileged people of Romania through the Relief Fund for Romania.

Book THE RED CROSS KNIGHT A story with a moral

Download or read book THE RED CROSS KNIGHT A story with a moral written by Edmund Spenser and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-07-09 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The retelling, in novella form, of the epic poem by Edmund Spenser. Queen Gloriana ruled over a magnificent land, a rich and beautiful country. In her court she had 12 chief knights. Each of her 12 chief knights was known as the Champion of some virtue. Thus Sir Guyon was the representative of Temperance, Sir Artegall of Justice, Sir Calidore of Courtesy, and others took up the cause of Friendship, Constancy, and so on. During a great feast, which lasted 12 days, a stranger in poor clothes came to the court, and, falling before the Queen, begged a favour of her. It was always the custom at these feasts that the Queen should refuse nothing that was asked, so she bade the stranger say what it was he wished. Then he besought that, if any cause arose which called for knightly aid, the adventure might be entrusted to him. When the Queen had given her promise he stood quietly on one side. Soon after this there rode into the city a fair lady on a white ass. Behind her came her servant, a dwarf, leading a warlike horse that bore the armour of a knight. The face of the lady was lovely, but it was very sorrowful. Making her way to the palace, she fell before Queen Gloriana, and implored her help. She said that her name was Una; she was the daughter of a king and queen who formerly ruled over a mighty country; but, many years ago, a huge dragon came and wasted all the land, and shut the king and queen up in a brazen castle, from which they might never come out. The Lady Una therefore besought Queen Gloriana to grant her one of her knights to fight and kill this terrible dragon. Then the stranger sprang forward, and reminded the Queen of the promise she had given. At first she was unwilling to consent, for the Knight was young. However, the Queen kept her word and consented. He was given an old suit of armour upon which was a red cross, and was quickly named the Red Cross Knight. So the stranger and Una rode forth into the world together, while a little way behind followed their faithful attendant, Prudence. And now you shall hear some of the adventures that befell the Red Cross Knight and his two companions.

Book THE GOOD SIR GUYON A Children s Story with a Moral message

Download or read book THE GOOD SIR GUYON A Children s Story with a Moral message written by Edmund Spencer and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-06-25 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ARCHIMAGO, the wicked magician (whose other name you may remember was Hypocrisy,) who had worked such mischief to Una and the Red Cross Knight, was very angry when he found that in the end all his evil wiles were defeated, and that the Knight and the lady were happily betrothed. He would willingly have brought more trouble on them, but he was powerless to do any harm to Una, for she was now safely restored to her own kingdom, and living in the care of her father and mother. He therefore directed all his spite against the Knight, who had once more to set forth on his adventures, as he had promised Queen Gloriana to serve her faithfully for six years. At the end of that time he hoped to return and marry Una, and the King, her father, had made him heir to the throne. It happened, one day, that the enchanter saw marching to meet him a noble knight. The stranger was clad in shining armour and rode a splendid war-horse; his bearing was very stately, and his face, although calm and beautiful, was so stern and noble that all his friends loved him and his foes feared him. He was one of the chief knights of Queen Gloriana's court, a man of great honour and power in his native land. His name was Sir Guyon. Just as the Red Cross Knight was known as the Champion of Holiness, so Sir Guyon was known as the Knight of Temperance. Stopping Sir Guyon, this time he had a fresh story to tell, which, of course, was perfectly false. He implored Sir Guyon to come to the help of a beautiful maiden, cruelly ill-treated by a rough knight, who had cut off her golden locks, and threatened to kill her with his sharp sword. "What!" cried Sir Guyon, his gentle nature roused to indignation, "is the man still alive who could do such a deed?" "He is alive, and boasts of it," said wicked Hypocrisy. "Nor has any other knight yet punished him for it." "Take me to him at once," said Sir Guyon. "That I can easily do," said Archimago. "I will show you where he is," and he hurried off in high glee, because he thought that at last he had found a way of revenging himself on the Red Cross Knight, and so begins the adventures of Sir Guyon. Book EGYPTIAN TALES 6 ancient Egyptian Tales

Download or read book EGYPTIAN TALES 6 ancient Egyptian Tales written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within this small book you will find six distinctive folk tales from the ancient land of Egypt translated and edited by that giant of Egyptology – W. M. Flinders Petrie (1853 – 1942). Petrie was a pioneer of systematic methodology in archaeology and preservation of artefacts, so we can be sure when he was translating these tales he took care to arrive at the correct translation. Herein you will find the Tales Of The Magicians, Baufra's Tale, Hordedef's Tale, The Peasant And The Workman, The Shipwrecked Sailor and The Adventures Of Sanehat - each with their own set of explanatory remarks and notes appended to the story. Prior to this volume being published in 1899, the tales of ancient Egypt had appeared collectively only in French. The aim of the 22 BnW illustrations, by Tristram Ellis, has been to give a correct picture of the character of each of the various ages to which these tales belong, for there is a definite period assigned to each tale. For each drawing Flinders Petrie searched for the material among the monuments and remains of the age in question – no easy task. The details of the dresses, the architecture, and the utensils, are all in accord with the period of each tale. In the tale of Setnau two different styles are introduced. Ahura is probably of the time of Amenhotep III., whereas Setnau is a son of Ramessu II.; and the change of fashion between the two different dynasties has been followed as distinctive of the two persons, one a ka or double of the deceased, the other a living man. So, whether you’re an academic or someone simply interested in the ancient stories of Egypt, sit back and enjoy this excellent volume of tales.

Book DRAGONS TALES 28 tales of dragons and knights in shining armour

Download or read book DRAGONS TALES 28 tales of dragons and knights in shining armour written by Various and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is this book really for Boys Only? No way! We know girls can also be dragon slayers, or whatever they want to be. In this book boys will find 28 tales of dragons and serpents drawn from the mists of time. Some are friendly dragons which provide wisdom and direction to the heroes of our stories. Others are downright wicked, oozing malice and evil leaving the hero of the story no option but to destroy the spiteful, fire-breathing, beast. Our heroes always sally forth wilfully, but cautiously, engaging these ancient creatures to save a damsel in distress, or their families, from sure destruction and banishment to oblivion. Herein you will find the tails (Oops! Sorry. That was a Freudian slip) tales of The Deluded Dragon, The Gypsy And The Dragon, The Two Princes, The Dragon Of GhenT, The Magic Egg, The Great Battle, The Sword Gram And The Dragon Fafnir and many, many more. These tales have been drawn from eighteen old and forgotten books and the thirty-three illustrations are by different artists bringing styles that are as different as the stories themselves. But why a book for “boys only” you may ask? Some have said we are courting controversy? And we do agree. However, what better way to get boys to read than to offer them stories of battles and heroes who save the day? It seems that nowadays we are not allowed to use simple English adjectives to describe obvious situations. Why? Because the PC Police say so, and no-one dare disobey them! Anyway, who put them in charge? This is in itself a well-disguised form of tyranny. This is the type of tyranny my father, and maybe your grandfather’s, fought against in WWII. They fought for our right to go where we want, when we want and to have free speech. This is also the type of restrictive tyranny that the dragons in this book sought to impose on people, too scared to challenge them. Tyranny that existed until a hero stepped forward, challenged and defeated the dragon. It is our hope that the boys who read this book will grow up to be the kind of heroes who aren’t afraid of challenging the status quo.

Book EUROPA S FAIRY BOOK 25 Illustrated Popular European Fairy Tales

Download or read book EUROPA S FAIRY BOOK 25 Illustrated Popular European Fairy Tales written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein you will find 25 of Europe’s finest and most popular fairy tales. This was the sixth and last time that the famous folklorist Joseph Jacobs teamed up with the equally famous illustrator John D. Batten to produce yet another volume of exquisite fairy tales. Not only exquisitely told, but also exquisitely illustrated with 48 BnW illustrations. Created especially for his granddaughter, Peggy, here you will find the tales like: Snowhite, Beauty and the Beast, The Cinder-Maid, All Change, The King Of The Fishes, Scissors, Reynard And Bruin, The Dancing Water, The Singing Apple And The Speaking Bird, The Earl Of Cattenborough, The Unseen Bridegroom, The Master-Maid and many more. In this volume Jacobs brought together these well-known Folk-Tales of Europe, retold in such a way as to bring out the original form from which all the variants were derived. So if the tales herein seem a little different to the tales you remember, it’s because these have been retranslated with more of the original has been retained, with regional and national variations being kept to an absolute minimum. This may lead to children crying out "That was not the way you told us before." That’s because these tales are closer to the originals than previously published. In explanation, Jacobs has included sixty eight pages of explanatory notes detailing his methodology and the differences. Book The Havamal The Sayings of Odin the Wise One

Download or read book The Havamal The Sayings of Odin the Wise One written by Anon E Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE existed from very early times a collection of Norse proverbs and wise counsels, which were attributed to Odin (Othin) just as the Biblical proverbs were to Solomon. This collection was known as "The High One's Words," and forms the basis of the present poem. Few gnomic collections in the world's literary history present sounder wisdom more tersely expressed than the Havamal. Like the Book of Proverbs it occasionally rises to lofty heights of poetry. If it presents the worldly wisdom of a violent race, it also shows noble ideals of loyalty, truth, and unfaltering courage. Over time other poems were added to the original content dealing with wisdom which seemed, by their nature, to imply that the speaker was Odin. Thus a catalogue of runes, or charms, was tacked on, and also a set of proverbs. Here and there bits of verse crept in; and of course the loose structure of the poem made it easy for any reciter to insert new stanzas almost at will. This curious miscellany is what we now have as the Havamal Five separate elements are pretty clearly recognizable: (1) the Havamal proper (stanzas 1-80), a collection of proverbs and counsels for the conduct of life; (2) the Loddfafnismol (stanzas 111-138), a collection somewhat similar to the first, but specifically addressed to a certain Loddfafnir; (3) the Ljothatal (stanzas 147-165), a collection of charms; (4) the lovestory of Odin and Billing's daughter (stanzas 96-102); (5) the story of how Odin got the mead of poetry from the maiden Gunnloth (stanzas 103-110). There is also a brief passage (stanzas 139-146) telling how Odin won the runes, this passage being a natural introduction to the Ljothatal, and doubtless brought into the poem for that reason. 33% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere in the whole realm of literature will you find such a Marvel, such a Wonder, such a Nonesuch of a book; nowhere will you find impossibilities so real and so convincing than in the Tales of a Thousand and One nights, also known as the Tales from the Arabian Nights. The scene is Indian, Egyptian, Arabian, Persian; but Bagdad and Balsora, Grand Cairo, the silver Tigris and the golden Euphrates, and the blooming gardens of Damascus, though they can be found indeed on the map, live much more truly in the enchanted realms of these tales. Herein you will find eleven of the most popular tales of the Arabian Nights, taken from the original two hundred and sixty four, with color illustrations by Maxfield Parrish. Here you will find Tales of The Talking Bird, The Singing Tree, and The Golden Water, The Story of The Fisherman and the Genie, The History of the Young King of the Black Isles, The Story of Gulnare of the Sea, The Story of Aladdin; or, The Wonderful Lamp, The Story of Prince Agib, The Story of the City Of Brass, The Story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, The History of Codadad and His Brothers and The Seven Voyages Of Sinbad the Sailor. Once a child has once read of Prince Agib, of Gulnare or Periezade, Sinbad or Codadad, in this or any other volume of its kind, the magic will have been instilled into their blood forever, for the Oriental flavour in the Arab tales is like nothing so much as magic. NOTE: The editors have purposely shortened the stories so as to keep a child’s attention, omitting some of the tedious repetitions that creep in from time to time when Arabian story-tellers were embellishing the text to suit their purposes.

While some of the themes are familiar from contemporary fairy tales and folklore, other stories in this collection are infused with the inimitably Jewish struggle for survival and dignity; all are flavoured with a large helping of gentle humour. Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends tells of the boyish exploits of Abraham, Moses, and David, but also includes stories of higgledy-piggledy palaces, beggar kings, quarreling cats and dogs, waterbabes, bogey-men, magic red slippers, a talmudic Sinbad, Alexander the Great, and even the story of a star child. Aunt Naomi strove to create a collection of Jewish delights that boys and girls could add to their treasuries of general fairy-lore and childish romance. In this she succeeded-Jewish Fairy Tales and Legends not only preserves a cultural history, but also is richly entertaining. We invite you to curl up with this unique sliver of Jewish folklore not seen in print for over ninety years; immerse yourself in the tales and fables of yesteryear. A percentage of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated towards education scholarships for underprivileged Jewish youth.
