Book Danger UXB

Download or read book Danger UXB written by James Owen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autumn 1940: The front line is Britain itself. Cities are blitzed night after night. Even after the bombers have turned home, a deadly menace remains: thousands of UXBs. Buried underground, clocks ticking. Unexploded bombs blocked supply routes, emptied hospitals and turned families into refugees. Dealing with this threat soon became Churchill's priority. It was a battle of wits, German ingenuity against British resourcefulness. This desperate struggle against the ticking clock is told through the experiences of four key figures; Robert Davies, who saved St Paul's Cathedral; Stuart Archer, protector of the vital Welsh oil refineries; the extraordinary Earl of Suffolk, who inspired The English Patient and made possible the atom bomb; and John Hudson, the modest horticulturalist who mastered the V-1.

Book excerpt: As the Regia Aeronautica and the Luftwaffe unleashed their full might against the island of Malta, the civilian population was in the eye of the storm. Faced with the terror of the unexploded bomb, the Maltese people looked for help to the Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal Section, who dealt with all unexploded bombs, outside of airfields and the RN dockyard, across an area the size of Greater London. Based on official wartime records and personal memoirs, the extraordinary tale unfolds of the challenges they faced -- as the enemy employed every possible weapon in a relentless bombing campaign: 3,000 raids in two years. Through violent winter storms and blazing summer heat, despite interrupted sleep and meagre rations, they battled to reach, excavate and render safe thousands of unexploded bombs. Day after day, and in 1942 hour after hour -- through constant air raids -- they approached live bomb after live bomb, mindful that it could explode at any moment. In the words of one of their number they were 'just doing a job'.

Book Cosmical Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Cosmical Magnetic Fields written by E. N. Parker and published by Oxford Classic Texts in the Ph. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well known and widely used landmark text explores the universal spontaneous generation of magnetic fields in astronomical bodies and the agitation of the bodies by those fields. The general properties of magnetic fields, their appearance throughout the astronomical universe, and the havoc they wreak are described in simple physical terms so as to define the broad scientific problem presented by magnetic fields. Then, with the physical problems clearly in mind, the theoretical effects are demonstrated with formal mathematical illustrations from the basic electromagnetic equations. Oxford Classic Texts in the Physical Sciences From James Clerk Maxwell's towering achievement Treatise on electricity and magnetism, to today's ground-breaking research, Oxford University Press has often been regarded as the publisher of first choice for generations of scientists. The legacy of this long publishing tradition is an unrivalled catalogue of past publications, some of which have been unavailable from us for many years. By popular demand, Oxford University Press is now reissuing some of its most celebrated science classics in the Oxford Classic Texts series. The titles to be included have been selected not only for their historic significance, but also for their enduring eloquence and clarity of presentation. Individually, each book in this collection represents a milestone in the development of scientific thought and pedagogy; collectively these books amount to an unparalleled scientific library for the enjoyment of a new generation of readers.

Book Dynamo and Dynamics a Mathematical Challenge

Download or read book Dynamo and Dynamics a Mathematical Challenge written by Pascal Chossat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-07-31 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the lectures given at the workshop "Dynamo and dynamics, a mathematical challenge" held in Cargese from August 21 to 26, 2000. The workshop differed from most previous conferences on the dynamo effect in two important respects. First, it was at this international conference that the experimental observation of homogeneous fluid dynamos was first reported. Second, the conference gathered scientists from very different fields, thus showing that thepynamo problem has become an interdisciplinary subject involving not only astrophysicists and geophysicists, but also scientists working in dynamical systems theory, hydrodynamics, and numerical simulation, as well as several groups in experimental physics. This book thus reports important results on various dynamo studies in these different contexts: - Decades after the discovery of the first analytic examples of laminar fluid dynamos, the self-generation of a magnetic field by a flow ofliquid sodium has been reported by the Karlsruhe and Riga groups. Although there were no doubts concerning the self generation by the laminar Roberts-type or Ponomarenko-type flows that were used, these experiments have raised interesting questions about the influence of the turbulent fluctuations on the dynamo threshold and on the saturation level of the magnetic field.
