Book Population Health and Development

Download or read book Population Health and Development written by T. V. Sekher and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The population-health-environment approach to development recognizes the interconnectedness between people and their environment, and this book examines the issues therein while identifying areas of further research and action. Population growth, size, fertility, mortality, migration, settlement patterns, and resource availability all influence the environment and development; solving the associated complex challenges demands a better understanding of how these aspects of population impact the environment, how environmental changes impact our health and well-being, and what can be done to address these issues. If these aspects can be successfully and effectively integrated, then a range of development goals, from poverty reduction to health security to gender equity, can be achieved. The papers in this volume provide comprehensive analysis by utilizing the most recent data and information.

Book Environmental Change and Biodiversity

Download or read book Environmental Change and Biodiversity written by Ram Babu Singh and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unprecedented loss and changes in biodiversity are taking place at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels, in both terrestrial and marine groups of organisms. One of the major concerns of biodiversity loss is the reduction in the capacity of natural and managed ecosystems to render quality ecological services, such as production of food and fibre, carbon storage, nutrient cycling and resistance to climate and other environmental changes. The extraction of biomass resources such as fuel wood, fodder, timber etc., which was once within the carrying capacity of forests, has now crossed this limit in most of the resource-rich areas. Presently, habitat conversion and destruction are eliminating species at such a rapid pace that extinction of contemporary species is leading to imbalance of ecosystem. The problem of biodiversity loss needs to be minimized in order to keep the ecosystem functional. Therefore, assessing the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss and environmental changes, and establishing the bases for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, are major scientific challenges of our time. It is against this backdrop the present study was carried out with multidisciplinary approach to answer the following questions: " What are the spatial patterns of environmental change and biodiversity loss and their driving forces across the world in general and the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand in particular? " What are the linkages between land use/cover change, landslides and biodiversity loss? " To what extent community participation can help for conservation of biodiversity? The book will contribute to India s efforts in fulfilling the goals of the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE), Kyoto Protocol and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC). It will be useful for geographers, environmentalists, life scientists, mountain experts and policy makers.

  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2001-09-30
  • ISBN : 0313015392
  • Pages : 287 pages

Download or read book Of Fears and Foes written by Jose V. Ciprut and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-09-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the deadliest century known to mankind, the world still finds itself mired in bloodshed. In addition to formal inter-state conflict, we see an increase in other forms of organized violence, including ethnic warfare, terrorism, civil conflict, and internationally necessitated police actions. Cornered by these powerful global forces, nation-states continue their quest for security. Theirs is a search plagued by futility since the very meaning of the word security is being eroded by the pace and tenor of change in an evolving international environment more complex and confusing than ever. The explanatory power of traditional notions of international security, which has provided a cornerstone for international relations theory as a whole, seems increasingly inadequate in helping to understand the makings of global security. A novel approach is needed--one that integrates discerning insights from the study of language, history, geography, religion, economics, and technology, with more traditional understandings of the workings of power on an international level and on an intranational scale. Of Fears and Foes presents just this kind of innovative thinking by some of the most creative scholars working on these issues today. Ciprut invites us to consider a fundamental reassessment of what constitutes security and insecurity in an emerging global environment.

Book Environment and Development

Download or read book Environment and Development written by Jagbir Singh and published by I. K. International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2005 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 100 years, mankind has managed to destroy much of what it took nature millions of years to create. At no point in history has so much damage been done to our natural heritage in such a short amount of time. If something needed to be done to stop this crime against our future generations then now is the time to act, as with every passing day we are speeding towards a self-inflicted doomsday. What is killing our ecology and environment is generally known. What we need are solutions and ways of implementing them. This International Conference on Environment and Development: Challenges and Opportunities, held on March 4-6, 2005 at the University of Delhi, India, is one such step. The conference presented the most up-to-date ideas on solving problems, both ecological and environmental, which mankind has brought upon itself.
