Book excerpt: Villeneuve d’Ascq, c’est aujourd’hui plus de 60 000 habitants et seulement 40 ans d’histoire. Nombre de Villeneuvois d’aujourd’hui ont vécu en direct sa naissance au milieu des années 1970. Leur témoignage permet de comprendre comment les aspirations à « mieux habiter » y ont été vécues, comment une mémoire locale s’est sédimentée autour de quelques événements rassembleurs - mobilisations collectives à la suite de nombreuses malfaçons dans les constructions, lancement des chartes d’aménagement et de concertation, fêtes de quartier. On retrouve certaines valeurs et utopies « post soixante-huitardes » portées par les aménageurs et par beaucoup des premiers Villeneuvois. Les récits recueillis participent d’une véritable « poétique sociale », pour reprendre les termes de l’anthropologue Michael Herzfeld, par exemple ceux qui évoquent les pratiques et les représentations de ce que nous appelons l’« espace public de proximité », les multiples manières de se l’approprier, de ruser avec ses limites, de le partager. Villeneuve d’Ascq a été une ville d’utopistes rêvant d’une ville plus humaine, plus conviviale, qu’ils soient aménageurs ou habitants « pionniers ». Avec le temps, l’arrivée de nouveaux habitants, elle se transforme. Ce que tous nous disent finalement, c’est que si une ville procède de politiques d’aménagement et des manières de l’habiter, une « bonne ville », celle où l’on se sent bien, c’est aussi une ville qu’on peut rêver et imaginer. Ainsi ce livre, tout en apportant des données nouvelles sur l’histoire de Villeneuve d’Ascq et sur sa sociologie, appuyées par de nombreux témoignages, entend montrer qu’une ville ne peut se comprendre hors du recueil des représentations que s’en font ses habitants.

Known as the banlieue, the suburban landscapes that make up much of contemporary France are near-opposites of the historic cities they surround. The Social Project unearths three decades of architectural and social experiments centered on the dwelling environment as it became an object of modernization, an everyday site of citizen participation, and a domain of social scientific expertise. Beyond state intervention, it was this new regime of knowledge production that made postwar modernism mainstream.
