Book Utopia s Worlds and Frontiers of the Imaginary

Download or read book Utopia s Worlds and Frontiers of the Imaginary written by Maria do Rosário Monteiro and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of Utopia springs from a natural desire of transformation, of evolution pertaining to humankind and, therefore, one can find expressions of “utopian” desire in every civilization. Having to do explicitly with human condition, Utopia accompanies closely cultural evolution, almost as a symbiotic organism. Maintaining its roots deeply attached to ancient myths, utopian expression followed, and sometimes preceded cultural transformation. Through the next almost five hundred pages (virtually one for each year since Utopia was published) researchers in the fields of Architecture and Urbanism, Arts and Humanities present the results of their studies within the different areas of expertise under the umbrella of Utopia. Past, present, and future come together in one book. They do not offer their readers any golden key. Many questions will remain unanswered, as they should. The texts presented in Proportion Harmonies and Identities - UTOPIA(S) WORLDS AND FRONTIERS OF THE IMAGINARY were compiled with the intent to establish a platform for the presentation, interaction and dissemination of researches. It aims also to foster the awareness and discussion on the topics of Harmony and Proportion with a focus on different utopian visions and readings relevant to the arts, sciences and humanities and their importance and benefits for the community at large.

Book Italian Renaissance Utopias

Download or read book Italian Renaissance Utopias written by Antonio Donato and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first English study (comprehensive of introductory essays, translations, and notes) of five prominent Italian Renaissance utopias: Doni’s Wise and Crazy World, Patrizi’s The Happy City, and Zuccolo’s The Republic of Utopia, The Republic of Evandria, and The Happy City. The scholarship on Italian Renaissance utopias is still relatively underdeveloped; there is no English translation of these texts (apart from Campanella’s City of Sun), and our understanding of the distinctive features of this utopian tradition is rather limited. This book therefore fills an important gap in the existing critical literature, providing easier access to these utopian texts, and showing how the study of the utopias of Doni, Patrizi, and Zuccolo can shed crucial light on the scholarly debate about the essential traits of Renaissance utopias.

Book Unveiling a Parallel

  • Publisher : Syracuse University Press
  • Release : 1991-10-01
  • ISBN : 9780815625384
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Unveiling a Parallel written by Alice Ilgenfritz Jones and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1991-10-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in 1893 by two women from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Unveiling a Parallel is a remarkable precursor of twentieth-century feminist utopian novels like Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland and Marge Piercy's Woman on the Edge of Time. Couched as sentimental romance and utopian fantasy, Jones and Merchant's work satirizes nineteenth-century gender roles and discrimination against women, humorously unveiling the absurdities of socially constructed "femaleness" and "maleness." Journeying to Mars, the novel's nameless male narrator discovers a society where women enjoy equality with men. He meets Elodia, a community leader, who drinks excessively, has lovers, and uses drugs. Her behavior confounds his expectations about women's supposedly pious and pure "natures" and reveals that equality, if rooted in a patriarchal culture, is not necessarily a utopian virtue. In contrast, a more perfect state of development has been reached in a second country on Mars, where the narrator learns how unselfishness, nurture, and mutual support can offer viable alternatives to passive, chaste femininity or to greedy, lustful masculinity. By imagining a better world in women's terms and in women's language, Jones and Merchant still speak with vital insight to both women and men today.

Book Gnosis and Hermeticism from Antiquity to Modern Times

Download or read book Gnosis and Hermeticism from Antiquity to Modern Times written by R. van den Broek and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume introduces what has sometimes been called "the third component of western culture". It traces the historical development of those religious traditions which have rejected a world view based on the primacy of pure rationality or doctrinal faith, emphasizing instead the importance of inner enlightenment or gnosis: a revelatory experience which was typically believed to entail an encounter with one's true self as well as with the ground of being, God. The contributors to this book demonstrate this perspective as fundamental to a variety of interconnected traditions. In Antiquity, one finds the gnostics and hermetics; in the Middle Ages several Christian sects. The medieval Cathars can, to a certain extent, be considered part of the same tradition. Starting with the Italian humanist Renaissance, hermetic philosophy became of central importance to a new religious synthesis that can be referred to as Western Esotericism. The development of this tradition is described from Renaissance hermeticists and practitioners of spiritual alchemy to the emergence of Rosicrucianism and Christian theosophy in the seventeenth century, and from post-enlightenment aspects of Romanticism and occultism to the present-day New Age movement.

Book Echoes of an Invisible World

Download or read book Echoes of an Invisible World written by Jacomien Prins and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Echoes of an Invisible World Jacomien Prins offers an account of the transformation of the notion of Pythagorean world harmony during the Renaissance and the role of the Italian philosophers Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) and Francesco Patrizi (1529-1597) in redefining the relationship between cosmic order and music theory. By concentrating on Ficino’s and Patrizi’s work, the book chronicles the emergence of a new musical reality between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, a reality in which beauty and the complementary idea of celestial harmony were gradually replaced by concepts of expressivity and emotion, that is to say, by a form of idealism that was ontologically more subjective than the original Pythagorean and Platonic metaphysics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Traditions thrive on the dialectic of repetition. Drawing their topoi from the well of memory, they are situated on the very border between the deliberate and the habitual. Yet how is it possible to influence traditions? The present collection of essays studies the ways in which traditions are employed in the service of symbolic politics. What are the burdens and impositions of traditions, when their topoi are consciously exploited in the service of ideological purposes? Are there certain limits to manipulation that lie in the very nature of the traditions in question, a nature which therefore defines them? The contributors give a host of answers, studying topoi in medieval and early modern Europe from an interdisciplinary perspective.
