Book excerpt: Getting Out Of The Woods One Forest Products Company's Approach to Sustainability and Innovation This book is about one company, Cox Industries, and their mission to establish an innovation program that powers the creation of a unique, industry-leading business model. Family owned and operated for over sixty-five years, Cox Industries--recently acquired by Koppers--is the largest American-owned provider of treated wood utility poles in the US. With the addition of Cox Industries, Koppers is poised to become one of the largest wood treatment, production, and supply companies in the world. This book frames the challenges facing many small and mid-sized companies trapped in price-driven, commodity-like industries who remain hopeful of finding a more promising future. In Transforming the Utility Pole, author Barry Breede shows how one company and its strategic approach to innovations that are both profitable and progressive can serve as inspiration to business leaders across industries who want to make sustainability and corporate responsibility work together while running a successful business.

Book East Branch Lincoln Railroad

Download or read book East Branch Lincoln Railroad written by Erin Paul Donovan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built by James Everell Henry, the East Branch & Lincoln Railroad (EB&L) is considered to be the grandest and largest logging railroad operation ever built in New England. In 1892, the mountain town of Lincoln, New Hampshire, was transformed from a struggling wilderness enclave to a thriving mill town when Henry moved his logging operation from Zealand. He built houses, a company store, sawmills, and a railroad into the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River watershed to harvest virgin spruce. Despite the departure of the last EB&L log train from Lincoln Woods by 1948, the industry's cut-and-run practices forever changed the future of land conservation in the region, prompting legislation like the Weeks Act of 1911 and the Wilderness Act of 1964. Today, nearly every trail in the Pemigewasset Wilderness follows or utilizes portions of the old EB&L Railroad bed.

Book Breakaway Utility Poles

Download or read book Breakaway Utility Poles written by Hampton Clay Gabler and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vehicle impacts with utility poles are one of the most unforgiving types of crashes to which motorists are exposed. In New Jersey, nearly 200 vehicle occupants died on state highways after crashes into utility poles between the years 2000 to 2003. This report describes the findings of a research program to reduce the fatalities and injuries that result from traffic crashes with utility poles in New Jersey. The specific objective is to develop recommended procedures which will enable a designer to select the countermeasures which are most appropriate for reducing the frequency or severity of vehicle impacts with utility poles at a specific site.

Book Overhead Distribution Lines

It describes how to select the proper poles for specific applications. The especially valuable final chapter provides examples showing how it all works in practice, providing a background allowing more effective use of related industry software. Rather than delving into detailed design and installation techniques, this book serves as an overview for engineers and non-technical audiences alike. At the same time, it serves as a compendium of technical information not readily available elsewhere. This unique book: Offers an overview of pole structures, pole installation and maintenance, wires and cables, and cable installation and maintenance—with examples Provides information on national standards documents such as the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), ANSI O5.1, California General Order 95, and more Explores the "sag–tension" relationship between wires and poles Includes appendices that cover properties of messenger strands, wireless attachments, solution of equations to determine sag, under uniform and point loads Overhead Distribution Lines: Design and Applications offers readers an understanding of the basic principles and various issues related to electric supply and communications distribution lines. It is a valuable resource for utility engineers, as well as those without a technical background.
