Book excerpt: This dissertation studies two expected utility maximization problems from mathematical finance. The first project (Chapter 2) deals with a single-agent utility maximization under constraints on intertemporal consumption; the second project (Chapter 3) studies Nash equilibria in an N-player game of utility maximization under relative performance criteria. The main and unifying approach to the two problems is convex duality in a semimartingale market model. Utility maximization under ratchet and drawdown constraints on consumption in incomplete semimartingale markets. We consider the value function associated with this concave optimization problem as having two parameters: the initial wealth and the essential lower bound on consumption rate process. In order to rigorously formulate the constraints and define the primal domains for optimization in the general setting of semimartingale markets and optional consumption plans, we introduce a natural extension of the notion of running maximum to arbitrary non-negative optional processes. The dual domains for optimization are characterized in terms of solidity of the set of equivalent martingale deflators with respect to an ordering that is introduced on the set of non-negative optional processes. The abstract duality result obtained in the general incomplete market case is used in order to derive a more detailed characterization of solutions in the complete market case. Utility maximization under relative performance criteria of multiplicative form. In the first part of this project we consider the case of a complete semimartingale market. For a large class of players’ utility functions, a general characterization of Nash equilibria for a given initial wealth vector is provided in terms of invertibility of a map from R [superscript N] to R [superscript N]. As a consequence of the general theorem, we derive existence and uniqueness of Nash equilibria for an arbitrary initial wealth vector, as well as their convergence, in two special cases. The second part studies the case of CRRA utility functions in an incomplete Itô-process market model. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between Nash equilibria satisfying a certain integrability condition and solutions of a BSDE when relative risk aversions of players are small (less than 1) and linear constraints on trading strategies are allowed

Utility maximization is an effective tool for communication system design. Utility functions are used to translate user or design preferences to optimization objectives. Physical-layer resource allocation in a communication system is then based on maximizing the utility of the system. This dissertations formulates a utility-maximization problem with a rate region constraint on the rate vectors. It considers various discrete optimization problems for multiuser, multicarrier communications systems. It presents algorithms that find utility-maximizing rate tuples for concave and non-concave utility functions over rate regions of Gaussian vector multiuser channels. The non-concave functions considered are staircase and sigmoidal utility functions that are widely used utility models for multimedia applications. Using a branch-and-bound method, a sequence of bounds on the optimal objective function value is obtained that converges to the global maximum sum of utilities. At each step, the algorithm solves a concave subproblem for multiuser power allocation using dual decomposition. For multicarrier systems, further decomposition of the Lagrangian across the subcarriers provides a low complexity method for utility maximization. The second part of this dissertation presents the concept of revenue potential as a tool for Internet service providers for revenue-based power allocation. Broadband Internet service providers are for-profit companies. From their perspective, utility of a multiuser channel is the total price they can charge their customers for provision of services. Broadband price functions are generally staircase functions of advertised data rates. The problem of finding the revenue potential of a DSL binder is a utility-maximization problem with a staircase utility function. The problem for the crosstalking DSLs is solved using the branch-and-bound method. A serious crosstalking problem arises in mixed deployments of vectored DSLs, sometimes known as G. Vector, and legacy DSLs. Such deployments require rate control on unvectored lines to realize vectoring gains. Revenue potential is used to determine the optimal-revenue rate-limits for unvectored lines. A strategy that limits the rates offered to the unvectored customers is shown to increase long-term revenue for the ISP. The third part of this dissertation presents a spiderweb plotting technique for multidimensional rate regions. This technique is useful for visualizing subsets of high-dimensional rate regions on a two-dimensional plot. Utility maximization is an alternative to building such rate regions and returns a single useful point instead of multiple data points. Both techniques are useful in different applied contexts. The last part of this dissertation considers a problem of joint user-clustering and bit-allocation for coaxial cable systems. The problem arises in next-generation coaxial cable systems, sometimes known as DOCSIS 3.1, with multicarrier modulation and adaptive bit loading. Users need to be grouped together and assigned bit profiles to maximize spectral efficiency. The problem is a discrete, non-convex, utility-maximization problem. A greedy, coordinate-ascent algorithm is presented to find clustering solutions to the utility-maximization problem. A comparison with optimal solutions found by exhaustive search shows that the algorithm gives close to optimal performance.

Over time, the term has been used in two different meanings.The term was introduced initially as a measure of pleasure or happiness as part of the theory of utilitarianism, by moral philosophers such as Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. In particular, we solve the open problem of the continuous time expected utility maximization with addictive consumption habit formation in incomplete markets under two independent scenarios. In the first project, we study the continuous time utility optimization problem with consumption habit formation in general incomplete semimartingale financial markets. Introducing the set of auxiliary state processes and the modified dual space, we embed our original problem into an abstract time-separable utility maximization problem with a shadow random endowment on the product space [mathematic equation] We establish existence and uniqueness of the optimal solution using convex duality by defining the primal value function as depending on two variables, i.e., the initial wealth and the initial standard of living. We also provide market independent sufficient conditions both on the stochastic discounting processes of the habit formation process and on the utility function for the well-posedness of our original optimization problem. Under the same assumptions, we can carefully modify the classical proofs in the approach of convex duality analysis when the auxiliary dual process is not necessarily integrable. In the second project, we examine an example of the optimal investment and consumption problem with both habit-formation and partial observations in incomplete markets driven by Itô processes. The individual investor develops addictive consumption habits gradually while only observing the market stock prices but not the instantaneous rates of return, which follow an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Applying the Kalman-Bucy filtering theorem and Dynamic Programming arguments, we solve the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman(HJB) equation fully explicitly for this path dependent stochastic control problem in the case of power utility preferences. We provide the optimal investment and consumption policy in explicit feedback form using rigorous verification arguments.

Book excerpt: This book discusses an efficient random linear network coding scheme, called BATched Sparse code, or BATS code, which is proposed for communication through multi-hop networks with packet loss. Multi-hop wireless networks have applications in the Internet of Things (IoT), space, and under-water network communications, where the packet loss rate per network link is high, and feedbacks have long delays and are unreliable. Traditional schemes like retransmission and fountain codes are not sufficient to resolve the packet loss so that the existing communication solutions for multi-hop wireless networks have either long delay or low throughput when the network length is longer than a few hops. These issues can be resolved by employing network coding in the network, but the high computational and storage costs of such schemes prohibit their implementation in many devices, in particular, IoT devices that typically have low computational power and very limited storage. A BATS code consists of an outer code and an inner code. As a matrix generalization of a fountain code, the outer code generates a potentially unlimited number of batches, each of which consists of a certain number (called the batch size) of coded packets. The inner code comprises (random) linear network coding at the intermediate network nodes, which is applied on packets belonging to the same batch. When the batch size is 1, the outer code reduces to an LT code (or Raptor code if precode is applied), and network coding of the batches reduces to packet forwarding. BATS codes preserve the salient features of fountain codes, in particular, their rateless property and low encoding/decoding complexity. BATS codes also achieve the throughput gain of random linear network coding. This book focuses on the fundamental features and performance analysis of BATS codes, and includes some guidelines and examples on how to design a network protocol using BATS codes.
