Book Utility and Happiness in a Prosperous Society

Download or read book Utility and Happiness in a Prosperous Society written by Yoram Kirsh and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some examples of human behavior which seem paradoxical or irrational in view of the utility maximization principle can be explained as rational if we distinguish between two types of utility. The first type is the conventional utility - cardinal or ordinal - which the rational economic actors are expected to maximize. The second type is connected to actions which fulfill some psychological needs and might appear irrational by cost-effective calculations. Two instances of the second type are philanthropy and altruism on the one hand and excessive consumption, on the other. Although they stem from totally different drives, both are economically irrational but can be linked to the utility of the second type. The two-utilities model is rooted in Humanistic Psychology tenets, such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs as well as in recent results in Happiness Economics. It can be assumed that, on the average, the richer a person is, the less he cares about maximizing the first type of utility, while the importance of the second type in his life increases. As the society becomes more prosperous, both positive and negative trends of the second type of utility become more widespread: more resources are wasted on unnecessary products and services, and more money is spent on philanthropy. The two-utilities model can explain some seemingly odd features of the prosperous society, and may have practical applications as well. This article is scheduled to be a chapter in a book on the economics of the prosperous society. My claim is that there is a gap between economic theory and economic reality in the western world, since economics was traditionally established to deal with conditions of scarcity. As many of our current problems are associated with abundance rather than with scarcity, new tools are needed to tackle the modern dilemmas. For a definition of a prosperous society, please see the previous chapter (Unemployment and Job Creation in a Prosperous Economy). Book Prosperous Society The From Economics Of Sarcity To Economics Of Abundance

Download or read book Prosperous Society The From Economics Of Sarcity To Economics Of Abundance written by Yoram Kirsh and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical economic theory fails to truly describe the economies of prosperous societies. This is because traditional economics deals with the allocation of resources in conditions of shortage, while the urgent economic problems of a prosperous society are mainly associated with conditions of abundance. This book presents the hallmarks of a prosperous society and analyzes the special problems that it faces. It differentiates between the two types of economies: the traditional one which is based on scarcity, and the prosperous economy which is able to fulfill almost everyone's needs. The book analyzes what motivates these two types of economies, what challenges them, and what features or manifestations of success and failures characterize their current statuses and their futures. This book is an original and pioneering work. It analyzes the economy of the prosperous society from the perspective of the third decade of the 21st century. It is an interesting, engaging text on a theme that we seldom see and read about.

Book Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Utility

Download or read book Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Utility written by Anthony Kenny and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by Anthony and Charles Kenny brings a serious scholarly perspective--actually, two perspectives that work surprisingly well together--to the subject matter. The book is a set of essays, each chapter alternately on the philosophy (written by Anthony, a former master of Balliol College, Oxford) and the economics (written by Charles, a noted economist) of happiness. Their approach implicitly reminds the reader that philosophy and economics used to be one and the same (a commentary in itself on the sometimes sorry effects of growing academic specialization). The book asks essentially two questions: What is happiness all about? And how is it related other things we are supposed to care about, like quality of life or wealth? The two authors weave together history with current debates and new evidence to give a rich account of the state of our understanding. And it's actually very readable, so don't let the imposing academic cover scare you off.

Book excerpt: What is happiness? Here, one of the world’s foremost behavioral scientists tackles this age-old question. He shows that there are many ways of achieving happiness; for example, there is the inherent happiness that comes with the love of a child; the competitive happiness of triumphing over your opponents; the sensual happiness of the hedonist. Rather than preaching a particular behavior or way of life, Morris provides knowledge that we can use, if we wish, to make ourselves happier.

Book Assessing Well Being

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ed Diener
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-06-04
  • ISBN : 9048123542
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Assessing Well Being written by Ed Diener and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-04 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sandvik, Diener, and Seidlitz (1993) paper is another that has received widespread attention because it documented the fact that self-report well-being scales correlate with a number of other methods of measuring the same concepts, such as with reports by knowledgeable “informants” (family and friends), expe- ence sampling measurement, and the memory for good versus bad life events. A single factor was found to underlie measures using different methods, and a n- ber of different well-being self-report measures were found to correlate with the non-self-report measures. Thus, although the self-report measures of well-being are imperfect, and can be in uenced by response artifacts, they have substantial validity as shown by their correlations with measurements based on alternative methods. Whereas the Pavot and Diener article reviewed the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Lucas, Diener, and Larsen (2003) paper reviews various approaches to assessing positive emotions. As we wrote in the chapter in this volume in which we present new measures, we do not consider any of the existing measures of positive affect to be entirely acceptable for measuring subjective well-being in the affect area, and that is why we have created and validated a new measure.

Book Redefining Prosperity

Download or read book Redefining Prosperity written by Isabelle Cassiers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society today faces a difficult contradiction: we know exactly how the physical limits of our planet are being reached and exactly why we cannot go on as we have before – and yet, collectively, we seem unable to reach crucial decisions for our future in a timely way. This book argues that our definition of prosperity, which we have long assimilated with the idea of material wealth, may be preventing us from imagining a future that meets essential human aspirations without straining our planet to the breaking point. In other words, redefining prosperity is a necessary and urgent task. This book is the fruit of a long debate among 15 scholars from diverse fields who worked together to bring the depth and nuance of their respective fields to questions that affect us all. The result is a rich, transdisciplinary work that illuminates the philosophical and historical origins of our current definition of prosperity; identifies the complex processes that gave rise to the problems we face today; elucidates the ways in which our contemporary environmental, social, nutritional, economic, political, and cultural crises are interconnected; and explores why a half-century of economic growth has neither increased life satisfaction in the West nor vanquished world poverty. Approaching these broad-ranging questions from the specific standpoints of their disciplines, each of the authors offers thoughts for the future, considering possible escape routes and proposing changes to the way we live, behave, and organise society and public action – changes that actually respond, in an equitable way, to our deepest aspirations. Ultimately, in laying the groundwork for a public debate on this subject, this book poses a question to its readers: what is your definition of prosperity, and what can be done to promote it?

Download or read book Happiness written by Bent Greve and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-29 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised and updated edition of Happiness provides an accessible introduction to the concept of happiness and how it can be applied to public policy in order to help citizens achieve the good life. Countries around the globe want to ensure the best for their citizens. They want them to be happy, have a good life and improve their well-being. It follows that, whilst happiness is based upon individuals’ subjective perception of their own situation, it is important to understand the concept of happiness in order to form policies that might help individuals to achieve what they believe will make them happier. Applying approaches from disciplines across the social sciences, this book explores varying notions of happiness and how these can be applied to create a theoretical understanding of happiness as a concept. The book then demonstrates how the concept of happiness can be used to analyse social policy in welfare states in areas including work, health and migration, as well as to evaluate everyday life and social relationships. This book will be essential reading for students and instructors in a range of subjects in the humanities and social sciences with an interest in the concept of happiness and/or welfare states.

Download or read book David Hume written by Russell Hardin and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell Hardin presents a new explication of David Hume's moral and political theory. With Hume, he holds that our normative views can be scientifically explained but they cannot be justified as true. Hume argued for the psychological basis of such views. In particular, he argued for sympathy as the mirroring of the psychological sensations and emotions of others. By placing Hume in the developing tradition of social science, as a strong forerunner of his younger friend Adam Smith, Hardin demonstrates Hume's strong strategic sense, his nascent utilitarianism, his powerful theory of convention as a main source of social and political order, and his recognition of moral and political theory as a single enterprise.
