Ovarian cancer is cancer that begins in the cells that constitute the ovaries, including surface epithelial cells, germ cells, and the sex cord-stromal cells. Cancer cells that metastasize from other organ sites to the ovary (most commonly breast or colon cancers) are not then considered ovarian cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer accounts for 4 percent of all cancers among women and ranks fifth as a cause of their deaths from cancer. The American Cancer Society statistics for ovarian cancer estimate that there will be 25,400 new cases and 14,300 deaths in 2003. The death rate for this disease has not changed much in the last 50 years. Unfortunately, almost 70 percent of women with the common epithelial ovarian cancer are not diagnosed until the disease is advanced in stage -- i.e., has spread to the upper abdomen (stage III) or beyond (stage IV). The 5-year survival rate for these women is only 15 to 20 percent, whereas the 5-year survival rate for stage I disease patients approaches 90 percent and for stage II disease patients approaches 70 percent. Ovarian tumors are named according to the type of cells the tumor started from and whether the tumor is benign or cancerous. The three main types of ovarian tumors are: Epithelial Tumors, Germ Cell Tumors and Stromal Tumors.

Book excerpt: It is with great pleasure that I write this Foreword to the Proceedings of the International Conference on Behçet’s Disease which was held in Berlin in June 2002. This was the first International Conference held under the auspices of the International Society for Behçet’s Disease which was founded in 2000 in Seoul. First, I congratulate our colleagues in Berlin, led by Professor Christos Zouboulis of the Department of Dermatology at the Free University of Berlin, for having organised a most successful conference and for having compiled these proceedings so rapidly. It will be realised immediately on scanning the contents of this book that the conference was truly international with 210 participants from 26 countries, as Professor Zouboulis has noted in his preface. These included basic scientists, epidemiologists, pathologists, clinicians and, importantly, representatives from patient organisations. The latter held their own conference alongside the scientific-medical conference to mutual benefit. The combined session of patients and doctors (abstracts on pp 601 – 626) gave the opportunity for an exchange of information and fruitful discussion. The wide ranging scope of the communications is evident from the index and it was most encouraging to see their origin – from all parts of the world, from senior and junior colleagues and, from many different disciplines. Many communications may be regarded as preliminary reports of research in progress and we look forward to seeing the definitive publications in appropriate journals in due course.

The neurologic symptoms are often more disabling than the primary cancer. Symptoms including confusion, seizures, pain and paralysis may be a result of either metastases to the nervous system or one of several nonmetastatic complications of cancer. The physician who promptly recognizes neurologic symptoms occurring in a patient with cancer and makes an early diagnosis may prevent the symptoms from becoming permanently disabling or sometimes lethal. This monograph, an update of the first edition published in 1995, is divided into 3 sections. The first classifies the wide variety of disorders that can cause neurologic symptoms the patient with cancer, discusses the pathophysiology of nervous system metastases, the pathophysiology and treatment of brain edema and the approach to supportive care of common neurologic symptoms such as seizures, pain, and side effects of commonly used supportive care agents. The final chapter addresses paraneoplastic syndromes.The book is intended for practicing oncologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists as well as internists who treated patients with cancer. Aspergillus species are used in the fermentation industry for the production of various enzymes, organic acids and pharmaceutically important compounds, and in Oriental food fermentations. At the same time, Aspergilli can cause opportunistic infections, and produce a range of secondary metabolites also known as mycotoxins which are harmful to humans and animals. Due to its importance in biotechnology, medicine and foods, Aspergilli are in the forefront of studies dealing with various aspects of fungi. This is well illustrated by the fact that projects aiming at sequencing the genomes of nine species are in progress. In this book, some aspects of the biology of this genus are covered, including the biotechnological importance of Aspergilli, their role in mycotoxin contamination of food products including grapes and coffee products, and implications of biodiversity of Aspergillus populations for agriculture. Among the clinical aspects, the role of Aspergilli in eye infections, the mechanisms of antifungal drug resistance and their molecular identification in the clinical setting are covered. Several chapters deal with the genomic aspects of Aspergilli, including the genomics of pigment biosynthesis, extracellular enzyme production, aflatoxin biosynthesis and the identification of genes taking part in sexual processes. Book excerpt: Recent developments in the field of cellular pathology and molecular biology have had a major impact on our ability to diagnose lymphoreticular disease and on our understanding of many of the disease processes which contribute to lymphoreticular pathology. Twenty years ago, the immunological analysis of lymphoid proliferations was in its infancy. The techniques available, such as sheep red blood cell rosetting and immune adherence to frozen sections, now appear unbelievably crude when compared with our ability to accurately phenotype lymphocytes in suspension, in frozen section and, more recently, in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue biopsies. Four international work shops have also standardized the nomenclature for the wide range of lineage restricted and lineage-related monoclonal antibodies available, and have provided a basis for the sophisticated phenotypic analysis of lymphoid neoplasms in even the smallest routine laboratories. Our concepts relating to the pathogenesis of a number of human lymphomas have also changed substantially, and this has been aided by the development of systems for the classification of human lymphoma which are firmly based in our knowledge of the differentiation and biological behaviour of normal lymphoreticular cells. In this monograph, we present contributions from many authors examining both leukaemia and lymphoma from an immunological perspec tive. It is our hope that some of these contributions will be of practical value in the laboratory investigation and diagnosis of lymphoreticular disease. Other contributions record our conceptual understanding of the histogenesis and pathogenesis of human lymphoma.
