Book excerpt: Provides information on fire as an ecological factor in forest habitat types, and in pinyon-juniper woodland and oak-maple brushland communities occurring in Utah. Identifies Fire Groups based on fire's role in forest succession. Describes forest fuels and suggests considerations for fire management.

Book Utah s Forest Resources 2008 2017

Download or read book Utah s Forest Resources 2008 2017 written by Jim Menlove and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a summary of the most recent Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data of Utah’s forests based on field data collected between 2008 and 2017. Many of the results were compared to earlier reports using data from 2000-2005 (DeBlander et al. 2010), and from 2003-2012 (Werstak et al. 2016). Utah’s forest land covers 18 million acres, of which 39 percent (7 million acres) are administered by the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of Interior, 35 percent (6.4 million acres) by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and 15 percent (2.7 million acres) are privately owned. The State’s most abundant forest-type group is Pinyon/juniper woodland, which covers 10.5 million acres (58 percent). At 1.1 billion live trees, the Woodland softwoods species group (predominately pinyon and juniper species) is the most common by number of live trees (5.0 inches or greater in diameter), followed by the Cottonwood and aspen species group (231 million live trees). Woodland softwoods make up about 45 percent (6.7 billion cubic feet) of the State’s total live tree volume and 46 percent (121 million tons) of the biomass. Utah’s forests contain 15 billion cubic feet of net volume in trees 5.0 inches in diameter and larger with an average annual mortality of trees 5.0 inches in diameter or larger totaling 250 million trees per year, and a negative average annual net growth of 41 million trees per year. This report includes descriptive highlights and tables of area, number of trees, biomass, volume, growth, mortality, and removals, as well as trends based on past inventories on forest land. Most sections and tables are organized by forest type or forest-type group, tree species group, diameter class, or owner group.

Book Coniferous Forest Habitat Types of Central and Southern Utah

Download or read book Coniferous Forest Habitat Types of Central and Southern Utah written by Andrew P. Youngblood and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A land-classification system based upon potential natural vegetation is presented for the coniferous forests of central and southern Utah. It is based on reconnaissance sampling of about 720 stands. A hierarchical taxonomic classification of forest sites was developed using the habitat type concept. Seven climax series, 37 habitat types, and six additional phases of habitat types are defined and described. A diagnostic key, using conspicuous indicator species, provides for field identification of the types.

Book The Northern Goshawk in Utah

Download or read book The Northern Goshawk in Utah written by Russell T. Graham and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment describes northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) habitat in the State of Utah. Because of fire exclusion, insect and disease epidemics, timber harvest, livestock grazing, or a combination of these factors the forests and woodlands of Utah have changed drastically since the early 1900's. Forests are now dominated by mid- and late successional species (Douglas-fir, white fir, and subalpine fir) rather than the early successional species (lodgepole and ponderosa pine). Along with these changes came suspected declines in goshawk populations. Goshawk habitat in Utah was assessed using potential vegetation types, current vegetation types, and expert knowledge. Subalpine fir (17 percent) and quaking aspen (10 percent) potential vegetation types were the most common forest types in the State. Nearly 95 percent of the subalpine fir potential vegetation type was rated as high or medium for nesting habitat, while nearly 90 percent of the quaking aspen potential vegetation type was rated as high or medium for nesting. Similarly, combining nesting and foraging preferences 70 percent of the subalpine fir potential vegetation type is rated as either high value or optimum habitat. In addition, throughout Utah all of the high value habitats are well connected. The present conditions of the forests and woodlands of Utah are prone to insect and disease epidemics in addition to the risk of stand replacing fires. To ensure the goshawk's continued existence in Utah will require the restoration of these degraded habitats and the protection of native processes.
