Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A place apart, Utah began as an undefined land in the middle of the continent, a place that meant little to the few natives who lived there and even less to the fewer travelers who passed through. Utah is a land whose geographical isolation would forever mark its history. To the Mormons who took refuge there in the 1840s, distance from the outside world was its greatest attraction, and there in the desert of the Great Basin, the Saints set out to build up Zion and wait for the Lord. Today, believes author Charles S. Peterson, Utahans have proved to be followers rather than leaders on most public issues, seeking the sure precedent and the safe path--a legacy of the Saints' old quest for security and respect in a hostile world.

Book The History of Emigration Canyon Gateway to Salt Lake Valley

Download or read book The History of Emigration Canyon Gateway to Salt Lake Valley written by Cynthia Furse and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emigration Canyon is well known in Utah as the route by which pioneers, in 1847, reached Great Salt Lake Valley to establish the state's first lasting Euro-American settlements. Before and after 1847 the canyon had an interesting history, which included the Donner-Reed party, the Pony Express and Overland Stage, mining and sheep herding, a narrow-gauge railroad, a major resort, a brewery, and the transformation of recreation areas and cabin sites into year-round residential neighborhoods. This well-illustrated, detailed history tells the story of a unique place, but its counterparts can be found across the West and America wherever the development of wild and scenic areas has been shaped by the growth and needs of neighboring cities. In this second edition, new illustrations and maps, new information and stories, a significantly expanded chapter on the Emigration Canyon Railroad, and a new chapter on the modern history, bring to life the story of a place and its people.

Book Popular History of Utah Classic Reprint

Download or read book Popular History of Utah Classic Reprint written by Orson F. Whitney and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular History of Utah It has fallen to my lot to prepare for publication three histories of Utah. The earliest and largest, consisting of four volumes, published in elegant and expensive style, had of necessity but a limited circulation. Nevertheless it may be found in many homes throughout the State, and upon the shelves of leading libraries in various parts of the land. The second history was written at the request of local educators, for use in the grammar grades of the public schools. Prepared in haste to meet an urgent demand, "The Making of a State" did not aim to give a complete presentation of the subject, though all salient points, social, political and industrial, were touched upon in its pages. Controversial matters were purposely omitted, for the sake of good feeling between "Mormon" and "Gentile" children attending those schools. The work now issued represents the realization of a desire to produce a history of Utah complete in a single volume, one that could be sold at such a figure as to place it within the reach of all. Moreover, it was my wish to make clearer certain points imperfectly presented in my first production. The period during which it was compiled - that of the anti-polygamy crusade - was one of strife and turmoil; books and documents had been confiscated or were scattered; and sources of information were not accessible nor so plentiful as they are at the present time. Consequently I labored at a great disadvantage. The difficulty of writing contemporaneous history, amid the heat and stress of happenings involved in the narrative, is one recognized by all intelligent minds. That I have experienced this difficulty, I admit. Never at any time, however, have I purposely misrepresented anybody or anything. I write from the "Mormon" viewpoint, but not as an Anti-"Gentile." I have none but friendly feelings toward all the people of Utah, regardless of sect, party, color, or creed. This is the story of my native State - a record of the facts as I behold them; and "with malice toward none," and "with charity for all," I send it forth upon its mission. Book History of Utah 1540 1887 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Utah 1540 1887 Classic Reprint written by Hubert Howe Bancroft and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Utah, 1540-1887 If the writer is fortunate enough to escape the many pitfalls of fallacy and illusion which beset his way; if he is wise and successful enough to find and follow the exact line of equity which should be drawn between the hotly contending factions; in a word, if he is honest and capable, and speaks honestly and openly in the treatment of such a subject, he is pretty sure to offend, and bring upon himself condemnation from all parties. But where there are palpable faults on both sides of a case, the judge who unites equity with due discrimination may be sure he is not in the main far from right if he succeeds in offending both sides. Therefore, amidst the multiformity of conflicting ideas and evidence, having abandoned all hope of satisfying others, I fall back upon the next most reasonable prop osition left - that of satisfying myself.
