Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglo-Zulu War was one of many colonial campaigns in which the British Army served as the instrument of British imperialism. The conflict, fought against a native adversary the British initially under-estimated, is remarkable for battles that included perhaps the most humiliating defeat in British military history-the Battle of Isandlwana, January 22, 1879-and one of its most heroic feats of martial arms-the defense of Rorke's Drift, January 22-23, 1879. While lasting only six months, it is one of the most examined, studied, and debated conflicts in Victorian military history. Anglo-Zulu War, 1879: A Selected Bibliography is a research guide and tool for identifying obscure publications and source materials in order to encourage continued original and thought-provoking contributions to this popular field of historical study. From the student or neophyte to the study of the Anglo-Zulu War, its battles, and its opponents to the more experienced historian or scholar, this selected bibliography is a must for anyone interested in the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War.

Book The Anatomy of the Zulu Army

Download or read book The Anatomy of the Zulu Army written by Ian Knight and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the army of Africa’s Zulu kingdom leading up to their epic battle against the British army in 1879. Forces of the independent Zulu kingdom inflicted a crushing defeat on British imperial forces at Isandlwana in January, 1879. The Zulu Army was not, however, a professional force, unlike its British counterpart, but was the mobilized manpower of the Zulu state. Ian Knight details how the Zulu army functioned and ties its role firmly to the broader context of Zulu society and culture. The Zulu army had its roots in the early groups of young men who took part in combat between tribes, but such warfare was limited to disputes over cattle ownership, grazing rights, or avenging insults. In the early nineteenth century the Zulu nation began a period of rapid expansion, and King Shaka began to reform his forces into regular military units. Ian Knight charts the development and training of the men that formed the impi, which later operated so successfully under King Cetshwayo. Knight analyzes the Zulu’s fighting methods, weapons, and philosophy, all of which led to the disciplined force that faced the British army in 1879. “For me, this is the Zulu bible—everything you need to know about this warrior race over a 60-year period during the 19th Century. The battles fought are legendary and well covered many times over in other books, but Knight’s “anatomy” goes much deeper. The book explains why the Zulu Army was so fearsome and effective, by exposing how each warrior was virtually nurtured into the role from birth and remained loyal until death.” —David H. Smith, Military Modelling

Book A Bloody Night

  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book A Bloody Night written by Dan Harvey and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word Zulu means ‘heaven’, but for the suddenly besieged and minute British garrison at Rorke’s Drift, among them a key faction of Irish soldiers, it represented a hellish horde of warriors from the Zulu nation. A Bloody Night documents the terrifying struggle of these Irishmen as thousands of poorly armed but well-trained Zulus unexpectedly hurled themselves in a head-long, deadly onslaught against their hastily barricaded trading station and mission hospital. The battle, a defining clash in the 1879 Anglo-Zulu war, was a bare struggle for survival; the deeds and heroics of the Irish soldiers, subdued within the grand narrative, were no less exceptional than that of their English counterparts. Dan Harvey brings examples of their sheer resilience to the fore. The defence of Rorke’s Drift was an epic encounter and an exceptional piece of soldiering. Its tale of courage in adversity against impossible odds endures; the little-known but significant role of those Irishmen present is no less absorbing a story, and all the more intriguing for its unheralded heroism.

Book Usuthu Cry Peace

Download or read book Usuthu Cry Peace written by Wessel De Kock and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an insight into the civil war now raging in South Africa for the soul of its black people. On the outcome depends the fate not only of that torn and divided land, but of the entire Southern African region. Media coverage of the racial foment in South Africa - images of stone-throwing youths and tough cops - has led to international perceptions favouring the violence option of organisations such as the African National Congress. But against the revolutionaries and the horror of "necklace" assassinations stands one of Africa's most remarkable organisations, the black liberation movement Inkatha. Led by a Zulu prince, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Inkatha and its leader have become pivotal factors on the Southern African political scene.

Book British Infantryman vs Zulu Warrior

Download or read book British Infantryman vs Zulu Warrior written by Ian Knight and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-20 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short but savage Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 pitched well-equipped but complacent British soldiers into combat with the Zulu, one of history's finest fighting forces. The clashes between these two different armies prompted tactical innovation on both sides, as the British and their Zulu opponents sought to find the optimal combination of mobility, protection and firepower. This engrossing study traces the changing face of infantry combat in the Anglo-Zulu War. Three major engagements are detailed: the Zulu ambush at Nyezane, repulsed by the British using their established tactics; the shocking defeat and massacre of outmanoeuvred British forces in savage close-quarter fighting at iSandlwana; and the British victory at Khambula following their adoption of more condensed firing lines and prepared positions.

Download or read book Brave Men s Blood written by Ian Knight and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2005-11-30 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most highly regarded books on the British campaign of the nineteenth-century Anglo-Zulu War fought in southern Africa. Robust and economically self-reliant, the Zulu Kingdom—created by Shaka kaSenzangakhona—was seen as a threat to British colonialism. In December 1878, the British High Commissioner in South Africa, Sir Henry Bartle Frere, picked a quarrel with the Zulu king, Cetshwayo kaMpande, in the belief that the Zulu army—armed primarily with shields and spears—would soon collapse in the face of British Imperial might. The war began in January 1879. Three columns of British troops under the command of Lt. Gen. Lord Chelmsford invaded Zululand. Almost immediately, the war went badly wrong for the British. On January 22, the Centre Column, under Lord Chelmsford’s personal command, was defeated at Isandlwana mountain. In one of the worst disasters of the colonial era, over 1,300 British troops and their African allies were killed. In the aftermath of Isandlwana, the Zulu reserves mounted a raid on the British border post at Rorke’s Drift, which was held by just 145 men. After ten hours of ferocious fighting, the Zulu were driven off. Eleven of the defenders of Rorke’s Drift were awarded the Victoria Cross. These are the best-known episodes of the war, and Rorke’s Drift went on to inspire the classic film Zulu, which established Michael Caine as a star. Drawing on new research performed since the centenary in 1979, the author delves deeply into the causes of the war, the conditions during it, and the aftermath.

The threat of invasion is ever present, and thirty thousand Zulu warriors stand ready to defend Cetshwayo, their king. Swazi princess Nomguqo Dlamini serves in the royal household. Her life is made miserable by her hut mates’ bullying. Cetshwayo, however, values her discreet presence and invites her to serve him directly. In this position, she observes first-hand the royal council’s discussions. To restore his cuckolded father’s honour, Mehlokazulu Ngobese crosses into British-protected Natal where he garrots his own mother. The trespass is used by the Cape Colony government to justify its invasion. As the country is put on a war footing, an unlikely friendship develops between Nomguqo and Mehlokazulu. The first military action at iSandlwana produces an overwhelming victory. However, in succeeding battles, inferior weaponry results in the Zulu defeat. In the power vacuum a civil war breaks out. Will Cetshwayo’s monarchy be restored? Will Mehlokazulu and Nomguqo be reunited? They plan for their future, but is their love strong enough to survive the chaos and anarchy left by war?
