Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March of 1967, Ken Killmeyer became a crew member of USS Forrestal CVA-59, the first of the super aircraft carriers. In 1995, Ken was offered the position of historian of the USS Forrestal Association. During his time as a historian, Ken began collecting personal experience narratives of crew members who were aboard along with him during the worst naval disaster to befall a ship since World War II. Ken has combined those stories with USS Forrestals deck logs and the official investigation report into the cause of the Forrestal fire and has given the reader an undeniable window into this devastating event. Ken takes the reader on a journey like none other, from high above the busy flight deck on the navigation bridge down to deep within Forrestals hull in the hot, steamy engine rooms. The reader will hear from the crew in their own words what they experienced before, during, and after this most tragic day in the lives of USS Forrestals Westpac 1967 crew. Book US Cold War Aircraft Carriers

Download or read book US Cold War Aircraft Carriers written by Brad Elward and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forrestal class (Forrestal, Saratoga, Ranger, and Independence) was the first completed class of US Navy supercarriers, so-named for their 25 percent size increase over the World War II-era carriers such as the Midway class, and the strength of their air wings (80–100 aircraft, compared to 65–75 for the Midway, and fewer than 50 for the Essex class). Design-wise, the Forrestals were a huge improvement over their predecessors, being more stable and comfortable, while maintaining advancements such as the armored flight decks that had been introduced with the Midway. The Kitty Hawk class was an improvement on the Forrestal-class designs, and four were built in the 1960s – Kitty Hawk, Constellation, America and John F. Kennedy. These were even longer than the Forrestals, and fitted with advanced defensive weapons systems and an improved elevator layout. All nine of the carriers covered by this volume are icons, and hold a much-respected place in US naval history. They are also some of the more well-known vessels outside of the military, for their long service histories, as well as for some of the more unfortunate events that seem to follow them.

Book Impact of the USS Forrestal 1967 Fire on United States Navy Shipboard Damage Control

Download or read book Impact of the USS Forrestal 1967 Fire on United States Navy Shipboard Damage Control written by Henry P. Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines the impact of the 1967 flight deck fire on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CVA 59) and the resulting two investigations, on the development of U.S. Navy damage control doctrine and equipment. The first investigation focused solely on the Forrestal fire; the second assessed the safety of aircraft carrier operations throughout the U.S. Navy. Both investigation reports included several proposals to improve shipboard damage control. The thesis found that most of these recommendations were successfully implemented, substantially enhancing shipboard damage control capability over the long term. Successful implementation of these proposals depended on the following: strong support by, long-term involvement of, and resourcing by the Chief of Naval Operations; as well as broad agreement by senior Navy leaders that the proposed changes were necessary based on lessons learned from the two investigations. Training and material deficiencies appeared to be non-controversial and thus relatively easy to correct; proposals that did not mesh well with Navy culture and existing personnel practices appeared especially controversial and were not successfully implemented.
