Download or read book Using Video prompting and BST to Promote Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of implementing a combined and integrative Behavior Skills Training (BST) and video-prompting paradigm. The training focused on enhancing social interactions and fostering the development of age-appropriate social skills in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This package included explicit training for generalization, as a means of fostering skill acquisition across untrained people and settings. Social initiation and reciprocal play are fundamental aspects of sustaining and maintaining relationships therefore, the training focused on teaching these two behaviors. The researcher used a quasi-single subject research design to analyze and measure the effectiveness of the intervention. Overall, the training was successful in increasing both participants independent skill acquisition of the target behaviors however, only one client was able to generalize the skills to the target population.

Book Promoting Daily Living Skills for Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders Via Parent Delivery of Video Prompting on the IPad

Download or read book Promoting Daily Living Skills for Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders Via Parent Delivery of Video Prompting on the IPad written by Elisa M. Cruz-Torres and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects one out of every 68 children in the United States. The disorder is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, social interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interest, or activities that together limit and impair everyday functioning. Research has shown that the use of visual resources, such as video modeling procedures, can support individuals with ASD to acquire and maintain a variety of daily living skills leading to enhanced levels of independence. A variety of technological devices have proven to be effective and efficient tools for the delivery of videos aimed at promoting independence among individuals with ASD while reducing the need for external prompts provided by others. As technology advances, devices have become more portable and, ultimately, affordable. Parents and caregivers have not only obtained these advanced technological devices, but actively seek to become more competent in using them to assist their children with ASD in a variety of ways. While there is ample research to support the use of portable devices to promote daily living skills for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities, relatively few studies have examined whether parents can be trained to effectively deliver video prompting interventions through the use of mainstream devices. The current study sought to evaluate parent fidelity of implementing video prompting procedures using an iPad tablet as taught during a behavior skills training. Procedural fidelity was assessed utilizing a multiple baseline across participants' design to determine if their children with ASD, between the ages of 12 and 17, were able to acquire and master the steps of a targeted daily living skill. Results indicated that parents were successful in their implementation of the training procedures. Results also demonstrated that their children were able to correctly and independently complete the steps of their daily living skills with high accuracy while also self-fading the viewing of video prompts. Implications for parent training and future research are discussed.

Book The Use of Video Prompting to Teach Functional Routines to Increase Independence for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book The Use of Video Prompting to Teach Functional Routines to Increase Independence for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Margaux Rachel Haley and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research has shown video instruction to be an effective intervention for improving academic, daily living, and social skills. This study evaluated the effectiveness of using video prompting via an iPad to teach Kindergarten students with ASD functional routines. A multiple probe across participants design was used to evaluate the effects of video prompting using highly preferred technology to learn to pack up a bookbag. The data indicate that one participant acquired the skill and maintained it over time in the absence of the intervention. The other participant did not master all of the steps of the task analysis. These data suggest while video prompting may be an effective intervention for some students, other variables may influence the effectiveness of video prompting. Limitations of the study and directions for future research are discussed.

Book Reaching Out Joining in

Download or read book Reaching Out Joining in written by Mary Jane Weiss and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important yet difficult skills for children with autism to learn is effective social interaction. This book introduces social skills programs to parents of preschool- and kindergarten-aged children diagnosed with one of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), including Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and PDD: Not Otherwise Specified. The book is based on the authors' decades of clinical experience using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a proven educational method, to teach social skills at home and school. This book focuses on four broad topics: play skills; the language of social skills; understanding another person's perspective; functioning in an inclusive classroom. This book helps parents to work with their child's strengths to improve social skills. Following the suggestions and exercises in this book, parents can teach children to: pretend-play, use toys appropriately, know when to use conventional responses like -- excuse me -- tell jokes, recognise that others' feelings and thoughts are different from their own, and initiate social interaction with peers. Included are tips for using games, modelling, rewards, role play, videos, activity schedules, and social stories to teach social skills and make the learning experience fun for parents and children. A case study of one family's efforts and successes provides a real-life example that's informative and reassuring. Appendices listing resources such as books, games, and activities give parents additional material to explore.

Book USE OF GENERALIZATION PROMOTION STRATEGIES AND VIDEO MODELING TO INCREASE SOCIAL SKILLS ACQUISITION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

Download or read book USE OF GENERALIZATION PROMOTION STRATEGIES AND VIDEO MODELING TO INCREASE SOCIAL SKILLS ACQUISITION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM written by Megan A Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulty with developing and generalizing the social skills necessary for long term success. Social skills deficits can often lead to shortcomings in other areas, and can hinder a child's potential for future independence. Currently, many studies addressing this issue use a train and hope approach to implementation, which does not always produce generalized outcomes. The study sought to determine how video modeling (VM) in conjunction with generalization-promotion strategies can be used to increase social skills acquisition for children with ASD. In this study, the use of generalization-promotion strategies and video modeling to increase social skills acquisition of children with ASD was evaluated by using a multiple baseline across behaviors design. Four students with ASD attending a public school and 11 neurotypical peers, all 8-10 years-old, participated in the study. Three behaviors were targeted based on results from the Autism Social Skills Profile (Bellini, 2006) completed by participants' parents/guardians. The three behaviors targeted were joining an activity, obtaining attention and taking turns. The following elements of the study were evaluated: the success of the video modeling intervention alone and the success of the video modeling intervention with the addition of generalization-promotion strategies, along with the procedural fidelity of the intervention and the social validity of the outcomes. The results of the study suggested video modeling alone produced increases in the training setting, but this result did not generalize to the new setting. Explicit intervention was required to produce generalization. Therefore, video modeling and generalization-promotion supported children with ASD in generalizing their use of learned social skills. Throughout each phase of the study, there was a high level of procedural fidelity, and parents/guardians' and data collectors' social validity survey responses suggested the interventions and outcomes were socially significant to the participants. Maintenance data suggested that participants were able to maintain the learned skills following the completion of the intervention. There were limitations to this research design, resulting in recommendations for future research.

Book Examining the Effects of Adaptive Prompts in Virtual Reality based Social Skills Training for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Examining the Effects of Adaptive Prompts in Virtual Reality based Social Skills Training for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Jewoong Moon and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My dissertation examined the effect of adaptive prompts in virtual reality (VR) based social skills training on social skills of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In my dissertation, adaptive prompts refer to an instructional technique to enhance social skill performance of children with ASD considering their emotional states. Despite the existing effects of prompts in social skills training, such prompts have been used largely by trainers' clinical decisions. Also, ASD children's emotional sensitivity and highly complex visual stimuli in VR may overwhelm them in VR-based training. Given these concerns, a timely and tailored support to draw attention and keep ASD children engaged in training is essential. However, little research has explored the design and implementation of adaptive prompts in VR-based training. Particularly, there is a lack of research examining the effect of adaptive prompts in VR-based social skills training. Using speech data mining and the macro-adaptivity design, I built and implemented adaptive prompts to enhance social skill performance of children with ASD. I used alternating treatments design (ATD), a type of single-case experimental design, to evaluate and compare the effects of adaptive and non-adaptive prompt conditions in VR-based social skills training. Endorsing this research design, I sampled a total of four children with ASD (12-13 years). I conducted multiple data analyses (id est, paired t-tests, independent-group t-tests, visual analyses, video observations, and effect size computation) to examine the effects of adaptive prompts on social skills performance. The findings of this study showed that adaptive prompts were effective in promoting the positive performance of social skills. Specifically, multiple independent-group t-test results demonstrated that there was statistically significant improvement of positive performance of both social interaction initiation and interpersonal negotiation. The visual analyses and effect size computation results also corroborated that using adaptive prompts yielded small improvement of social skills performance.

Book Teaching Children with Autism Social Skills Using Video Modelling

Download or read book Teaching Children with Autism Social Skills Using Video Modelling written by Joanne Hei Man Wong and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video modelling (VM) combined with video embedded instructions were used to teach social skills to four children aged between ten to fifteen who were diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. The aim of this study was to contribute towards the existing literature on the efficacy of VM. In addition to this purpose, this study focused on programming for response and stimuli generalisation through the videos created and the intervention procedures. A multiple baseline design across participants and social skills was used. Results showed the intervention was effective at teaching responding to greetings, personal space and verbal request. The intervention effects were questionable for teaching requesting a turn. All the participants generalised the social skill across different stimuli. Response generalisation was only applicable to three out of four participants, and two of the participants demonstrated successful response generalisation. Despite no response generalisation occurred for the third participant, response variation was observed. These results suggest that a simple intervention of VM paired with instructions can be highly effective at teaching social skills and promoting generalisation of the skills. The limitations and implications of this research are also discussed.

Book Video Modeling for Teaching Social Skills to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book Video Modeling for Teaching Social Skills to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Barbara Ann Rhinehart and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous studies have shown that video modeling (VM) interventions can improve various skills of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). VM is a technique that involves participants watching a video of a peer model demonstrating a desired behavior and then imitating the same behavior. The purpose of this research was to examine the impact of a VM intervention on social skills, defined as appropriate greeting tasks, of three elementary school-aged students with ASD. This study expands previous research on VM by measuring social skills using a social story as primer. A multiple baseline across participants design was used to determine if the students would imitate the greeting behavior after watching a video of a same-age peer reading the embedded social story and then demonstrating the greeting. A visual analysis of graphed data, effect size, and goal attainment scale for each student revealed that two out of three students improved significantly, while the third student exhibited no improvement.

Book Teaching Conversation Skills Using BST and Video Modeling Via Telehealth

Download or read book Teaching Conversation Skills Using BST and Video Modeling Via Telehealth written by Margaret Groves-Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic and the current state of education children have limited access to an environment where they can practice conversational skills with people outside of their immediate family. Traditionally, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a difficult time independently learning these skills, even in an environment that is ripe with social interaction(Grosberg & Charlop, 2017). The current study sought to use behavioral skills training, modeling, and prompting to teach the skills of responding to questions, asking questions, and changing the topic to one learner with ASD over telehealth. The study was conducted over three phases. The first phase consisted of collecting baseline data on the target behaviors. The second was a one-on-one intervention, where the researcher used video modeling to teach the participant one or more of the target conversational skills, they then practiced having conversation and the researcher provided the learner with feedback. These lessons continued, intervening on one behavior at a time until a stable rate of responding was observed. The final phase consisted of a maintenance and generalization assessment. Maintenance sessions occurred two weeks following the intervention and four generalization probes occurred in the home with different people during the final week of the intervention. The results indicate that these conversation skills can be learned through the one-on-one telehealth intervention, can maintain over time, and generalize to real world setting.

Book Teaching Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder Safe Pedestrian Skills Using Video Modeling with in Situ Video Prompting

Download or read book Teaching Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder Safe Pedestrian Skills Using Video Modeling with in Situ Video Prompting written by Toby Honsberger and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects 1 in every 68 children. Individuals with ASD have deficits in social, communication and behavioral skills which put them at a higher risk of injury and death than their typically developing peers. Parking lots are environments that present a number of potentially dangerous situations. Pedestrian skills, due to reliance on subtle cues and quick problem solving, can be especially difficult for individuals with ASD to master. The present study used a multiple probe design across participants to examine the effectiveness of a video modeling intervention with in situ video prompting feedback to teach five individuals with ASD to safely navigate a parking lot. Results of the study revealed that all five participants rapidly acquired the targeted skills and the skills were maintained in the absence of the video intervention at one week and two week intervals. Suggestions for further applications of the intervention package and implications for safety instruction are also offered.

Book Teaching Social Skills to Children with Asperger s and High Functioning Autism

Download or read book Teaching Social Skills to Children with Asperger s and High Functioning Autism written by Krystal M. McFee and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of video self-modeling and behavior skills training to teach social skills to children with Asperger's and high functioning autism. The targeted social skills were social initiations and social responses. The video self-modeling alone condition was implemented first using a video feedforward approach. A behavior skills training (BST) procedure was implemented following the video self-modeling alone condition for each participant. BST consisted of instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. The frequency of each target behavior was scored from videotapes using 10-second frequency within interval recording. After the video self-modeling was introduced, a mean increase was demonstrated in the target behaviors for 3 of the 4 participants. However, following the video self-modeling plus behavior skills training procedures, the social skills increased further for each participant. Follow up measures showed that the social interactions for each participant remained higher than baseline, however slightly lower than levels during BST+VSM.

Book Teaching Parent s to Implement Social Skills Intervention Via Telehealth Using a Behavior Skills Training Package During COVID 19

Download or read book Teaching Parent s to Implement Social Skills Intervention Via Telehealth Using a Behavior Skills Training Package During COVID 19 written by Torica Exume and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to current literature indicating the need for parent training in social skills interventions (SSI), this study examined the use of behavior skills training (BST) method for parents to implement SSI for their child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). BST consisted of four components (e.g. instructions, modeling, role-playing, and feedback) to breakdown the SSI in to smaller and simpler steps for the parents to implement. BST is commonly used and found to be effective in teaching individuals' new skills. BST may become a feasible parent training method that reduces parent treatment failures, early termination, and loss of motivation in the natural setting. The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of parent's utilization of BST to teach two social skills targets to their children with ASD within the natural setting. The child responses during the SSI role-playing component for the assigned vignette was measured to detect the correct applications of the social skills taught by the parent. Results indicated that parent-implemented BST produced improvements in three out of four parents' use of the social skills intervention relative to baseline, as evidenced by changes during the social skills intervention phase following the delivery of parent training to learn BST. Three out of four child participants reached mastery criterion for correct verbal responses to the SSI vignettes in the role-playing component during the SSI, maintenance, and generalization phases. The study used a concurrent multiple probe design across participants.
