Book excerpt: Evidence suggests that Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is an effective intervention leading to positive behaviour change when used with parents and their children. The aim of this paper is to explore the processes of Video Interaction Guidance (VIG). Utilising a case study methodology it explores some of the key processes within the video intervention through in-depth analysis of shared review sessions. It also examines what parents and EPs perceive as significant and helpful within the process of VIG. Results reveal that the interplay between the visual image and the nature and content of discussions appears to be qualitatively different when parents are more actively engaged in video review sessions. Parents perceived the intervention in different ways, which appeared to correspond with their level of engagement in shared review sessions. The limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are discussed and the direct implications are dealt with in the overall conclusion in Paper 2 (pg. 93). Paper 2 aims to evaluate the perceived impact of VIG when used with four parents and their children. Utilising a mixed methods case study methodology, it explores parents' views of their experiences of the video intervention and examines whether any changes are maintained over time. Findings indicate that parents perceived some positive attitudinal and emotional changes. However, it was not clear that any changes were maintained over time and whether they could be solely attributed to the impact of VIG but were perhaps a result of a combination of other factors. A number of common themes emerged across cases that related to barriers and enablers of successful outcomes in VIG as perceived by parents and EPs. The direct implications of this study, suggestions for further research, and for Educational Psychology are discussed.

Book excerpt: Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is an intervention that aims to improve communication and relationships. It is a video-based approach that involves a trained VIG professional filming, editing and reviewing film clips with a client, of their interactions with a significant other person. This thesis explores whether VIG can be used to improve pupils' participation in group work lessons, following a novel application of VIG in natural classroom settings. Study 1 aimed to determine whether there were improvements in video samples of observable classroom behaviour following VIG and to investigate participant experiences of the intervention. Participant evaluation of VIG, via focus groups, interviews and questionnaires, was positive. However, while Percentage of Data Points Exceeding the Mean (PEM) calculations of video data using a multiple baseline across participant small-N experimental design showed some degree of post-intervention changes, these were not statistically significant (p>.05) as indicated by Dugard and Todman's bootstrapped exact probability test (2011). Study 2 investigated whether the improvements reported by participants from Study 1 could be objectively observed by experienced professionals. A sample of 4 educational psychologists blind rated a random sample of pre- and post-intervention videos and identified post-intervention videos as evidencing significantly more effective examples of group work (p=.003). The criteria used in their clinical decision-making were used to inform a new video coding schedule. Re-coded observations from the sample of videos used in Study 1 were then analysed. Target pupils were found to be significantly more attentive and attuned to their peers after VIG (p=.05). While PEM scores of video data again indicated other post-intervention improvements, these were not statistically significant (p>.05). This study is unique in reporting objective, observable pupil behaviour change over the relatively short period of VIG intervention, with high levels of client satisfaction and acceptability. Methodological limitations and recommendations for future research are discussed together with key implications for practicing EPs.

Book excerpt: The rapidly increasing popularity of touch screen mobile devices, and accompanying educational applications ("apps") targeted towards preschool children, calls for a new look at parent-child interactions around educational media. Research has shown that parental involvement in children's educational media exposure can improve engagement and learning outcomes. However, to date little information is available on how parents navigate their children's use of educational mobile technology, or how similar or different these interactions are to more commonly studied parent-child interactions, such as around shared reading. This study described, using observational data, parent-child interactions around educational apps and mobile devices in a sample of 36 families with preschool-aged children. The study further examined how the quality of parental behaviors (e.g., warmth, playfulness, parent engagement, and autonomy support) related to child engagement and affect during the interaction, and to children's educational achievement, and explored how parent-child interactions around educational apps compare to those around shared reading and joint play with a math toy. Higher quality parenting behaviors were related to higher child engagement and less negative affect during the app interactions, and to child engagement and positive affect during the shared reading and math toy interactions. High quality parenting behaviors in the shared reading and math toy tasks, but not the app tasks, were additionally related to child math and preliteracy scores. Parents' and children's roles during the app interactions differed from shared reading and math toy play tasks, particularly in that children took more of a lead role in the app interactions. This study represents a first step towards updating existing knowledge about parent-child interactions around home learning materials to include issues relevant to the new mobile age.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine pre-existing research on parental technology use and its impact on child development and the parent-child interactions. The researcher systematically reviewed the literature to summarize the empirical research concerning parental technology use and parent-child interactions. The researcher utilized content analysis of articles from databases of PsychINFO and SAGE to find peer-reviewed articles which could be analyzed for this research. Seven articles met the search terms and were analyzed for content. The researcher found that communication between parent and child and between caregiving pairs was the skill which is most affected by parental technology use. When parents utilize technology during specific parenting duties such as mealtimes, communication can be hindered. Lack of appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication can lead to more stressful home lives which can impact the parent-child interactions and limit appropriate child development.

Book excerpt: Background: Child conduct problems are increasing and left untreated, they have the potential to develop into adult criminality. Evidence-based treatments such as the Incredible Years® Parent Programme are effective but high-risk families often have poor response to such treatment. Adding a home visiting programmes has the potential to improve outcomes. Aim: To evaluate the acceptability and efficacy of adding a structured Home Parent Support intervention to improve outcomes for high-risk families attending the Incredible Years® Parent Programme. The primary hypothesis was that Home Parent Support would improve child behaviour scores at post-treatment on the Eyberg Total Problem Scale. Results would inform the design of a larger prospective study. Method: A single blind, parallel, superiority, randomised controlled trial was conducted. Parents of children aged 3-7 years with conduct problems (N = 126) were randomly allocated in a computer-generated 1:1 ratio in permuted blocks to receive the addition of Home Parent Support (n = 63) or to the control group of Incredible Years® Parent Programme alone (n = 63). Data on standard child behaviour measures were collected at pre- and post-treatment and six-month follow-up and were analysed using an intention-to-treat design. Qualitative data were collected at each time point and were coded to identify themes and relationships between themes by randomised group. Intervention: Home Parent Support is a 10 session home visiting enhancement developed by the author to provide personalised coaching to address individual and systemic barriers for implementing effective parenting strategies. Setting: The trial was carried out in a clinical service in Tauranga, New Zealand. Results: Complete data were collected at post-treatment for N = 123 (97.6%, treatment n = 62, control n = 61) and at follow-up n = 115 (91.3% treatment n = 62, control n = 53). Results show no additional benefit of Home Parent Support at post-treatment (F(1,124,) = 0.2, p = .624). While the primary hypothesis was not supported, the maintenance of change at sixmonth follow-up showed some benefit on ECBI-P (F(2,248) = 3.5, p = .032). Secondary outcomes also showed benefits in terms attendance, retention, per protocol analysis and percentage of participants in the clinical range at post-treatment. Māori responded equally to treatment and satisfaction was high in both groups. Power calculations represent a realistic sample size to replicate this trial. Qualitative analysis showed parents valued the additional support. Their narratives demonstrated an understanding of principles for behaviour change, including their capacity to reflect on their own interactions with their children. This insight may contribute to maintainance of change over time. Conclusion: The additional benefit of Home Parent Support was not evident at posttreatment, however the maintenance of change at six-month follow-up was promising suggesting longer term benefits. The addition of Home Parent Support could be a realistic and clinically practical intervention to improve outcomes for vulnerable families while they attend the Incredible Years® group programme. Recommendations for future development include a larger prospective study with a larger sample of Māori partipants, follow-up at one or two years to assess maintentance of change, and a study of mediators and moderators. This report, the summary volume, includes the history of residential schools, the legacy of that school system, and the full text of the Commission's 94 recommendations for action to address that legacy. This report lays bare a part of Canada's history that until recently was little-known to most non-Aboriginal Canadians. The Commission discusses the logic of the colonization of Canada's territories, and why and how policy and practice developed to end the existence of distinct societies of Aboriginal peoples. Using brief excerpts from the powerful testimony heard from Survivors, this report documents the residential school system which forced children into institutions where they were forbidden to speak their language, required to discard their clothing in favour of institutional wear, given inadequate food, housed in inferior and fire-prone buildings, required to work when they should have been studying, and subjected to emotional, psychological and often physical abuse. In this setting, cruel punishments were all too common, as was sexual abuse. More than 30,000 Survivors have been compensated financially by the Government of Canada for their experiences in residential schools, but the legacy of this experience is ongoing today. This report explains the links to high rates of Aboriginal children being taken from their families, abuse of drugs and alcohol, and high rates of suicide. The report documents the drastic decline in the presence of Aboriginal languages, even as Survivors and others work to maintain their distinctive cultures, traditions, and governance. The report offers 94 calls to action on the part of governments, churches, public institutions and non-Aboriginal Canadians as a path to meaningful reconciliation of Canada today with Aboriginal citizens. Even though the historical experience of residential schools constituted an act of cultural genocide by Canadian government authorities, the United Nation's declaration of the rights of aboriginal peoples and the specific recommendations of the Commission offer a path to move from apology for these events to true reconciliation that can be embraced by all Canadians.
