Book Optimization and Design of Robust Supply Chain Networks

Download or read book Optimization and Design of Robust Supply Chain Networks written by Ram Prashanth Radha Krishnan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A robust and cost effective distribution network is critical to any fast growing company, both to meet demand under normal conditions and to adapt to temporary facility distributions. This paper develops two mixed integer programming models to optimize the supply chain of a national medical consumable supplies company with international manufacturers or otherwise geographically remote from demand locations and consistent monthly repeating demand and to provide some robustness against temporary disruption of facility operations. Specifically, p-median single-echelon and hub-and-spoke multi-echelon models are used to determine optimal locations of warehouses and distribution facilities that minimize total transportation cost, with a potential savings in the motivating application of 13% (approximately $1.4 million annually). Sensitivity analyses to a range of scenarios, furthermore, suggest that the optimal distribution network is affected primarily by manufacturer locations rather than customer locations within United States.

Book Designing a Robust Supply Chain Network Against Disruptions

Download or read book Designing a Robust Supply Chain Network Against Disruptions written by Mahmood Pariazar and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supply chains are vulnerable to disruptions at any stage of the distribution system. These disruptions can be caused by natural disasters, production problems, or labor defects. The consequences of these disruptions may result in significant economic losses or even human deaths. Therefore, it is important to consider any disruption as an important factor in strategic supply chain design. Consequently, the primary outputs of this dissertation include insights for designing robust supply chains that are neither significantly nor adversely impacted by disruptions. The impact of correlated supplier failures is examined and how this problem can be modeled as a variant of a facility location problem is described. Two main problems are defined, the first being the design of a robust supply chain, and the second being the optimization of operational inspection schedules to maintain the quality of an already established supply chain. In this regard, both strategic and operational decisions are considered in the model and (1) a two-stage stochastic programming model; (2) a multi-objective stochastic programming model; and (3) a dynamic programming model are developed to explore the tradeoffs between cost and risk. Three methods are developed to identify optimal and robust solutions: an integer L-shaped method; a hybrid genetic algorithm using Data Envelopment Analysis; and an approximate dynamic programming method. Several sensitivity analyses are performed on the model to see how the model output would be affected by uncertainty. The findings from this dissertation will be able to help both practitioners designing supply chains, as well as policy makers who need to understand the impact of different disruption mitigation strategies on cost and risk in the supply chain.

Book Robust Multi Sourcing Supply Chain Network Design Problem

Download or read book Robust Multi Sourcing Supply Chain Network Design Problem written by Yongzhen Li and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we study a multi-sourcing supply chain network design problem under demand uncertainty in which each retailer can source a single item from more than one distribution center. The problem takes into account the complex trade-off among the costs of facility location and inventory holding, as well as the fixed linkage and the per unit delivery costs between the distribution center and the retailer. We propose a nonlinear mixed integer programming model with a joint chance constraint (that imposes a certain service level on the network) to determine the locations, the inventory levels, and the retailer assignments of the distribution centers. Two approaches, namely, the set-wise approximation and the approximation based on the linear decision rule, are constructed to conservatively approximate the service level joint chance constraint with incomplete information of the demand distribution. Both approaches yield sparse distribution networks, which are effective in matching uncertain demand using the on-hand inventory and hence successfully achieve high service levels. We also show through numerical studies that the proposed approaches outperform other commonly adopted approximations of chance constraints.

Book Multi Criteria Supply Chain Network Design Under Uncertainty

Download or read book Multi Criteria Supply Chain Network Design Under Uncertainty written by Yamine Bouzembrak and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work contributes to the debate on how uncertainty and concepts of sustainable development can be put into modern Supply Chain Network (SCN). First, we study the literature review, which is a review of the current state of the art of Supply Chain Network Design (SCND) approaches and resolution methods. Second, we propose a new methodology for multi-criteria SCND as well as its application to real SCN, in order to satisfy the customers demand and respect the environmental, social, legislative, and economical requirements. Third, we present a multi-objective model that captures a compromise between the total cost and the environment influence. After that, we develop a novel heuristic solution method based on decomposition technique, to solve large scale SCND problems. Finally, we use two-stage stochastic programming approach to model the SCN under demand uncertainty. Then, we address uncertainty in all SCN parameters, we use possibilistic linear programming approach to model the problem and we validate both approaches in a large application case.
