A writing prompt that assessed students’ writing skills was administered at the end of the first and second grading periods. For two consecutive grading periods the researcher analyzed the writing rubric scores of second graders. Prior to writing second grade students were given explicit instruction using critical thinking strategies to respond to the writing prompts. Writing rubric scores from the first marking period were compared to the second marking period. The researcher served as a resource and assisted in broadening understanding of this critical thinking model of instruction. The need to constantly seek to improve the writing rubric was also realized during the study. The results of the study were positive. Analysis of the data revealed that there was significant difference in the scores of the writing rubrics. The study did show the value of the collaborative planning of explicit instruction of critical thinking among the second grade teachers. As a result the second grade teachers acknowledged the need to continue refining their writing program so that students’ writing skills will improve.
