Book Planning for Microcomputers in Higher Education

Download or read book Planning for Microcomputers in Higher Education written by Reynolds Ferrante and published by Ashe-Eric Higher Educ Reports. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look is presented at how institutions are currently planning for microcomputers. The question is not whether the computer network on campus and between campuses will be the single most important technological event of the century for higher education, but rather how it will occur. Six sections include: the coming of age of microcomputers: a growing challenge to planning in postsecondary education (profound change and challenge, environmental factors, and the purpose of this report); trends and issues (technology, management concerns, and government involvement); planning and use of microcomputers in postsecondary education: a national survey (policies for purchasing and using microcomputers, policymakers and decisionmakers, selection criteria for hardware and software, use of microcomputers, and financial and other commitments); planning process (muddling through, the reactive process, traditional long-range planning, environmental scanning, strategic planning, and tactical planning); examples of institutional planning (Brown University, Clarkson University, Drew University, Drexel University, University of Iowa, Lehigh University, Princeton University, and Stevens Institute of Technology); and conclusions and recommendations (a clear need, operating assumptions, recommendations, and judgments). Ten specific recommendations include: use strategic planning as the most appropriate planning model; involve all faculty and staff in planning the institution's information system and build institutionwide support; and aim for synergy. One figure, 12 tables, and 77 references are included. (SM)

Book Managing Microcomputers in Large Organizations

Download or read book Managing Microcomputers in Large Organizations written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1985-02-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The information age is taking its toll on traditional office management techniques. According to Infosystems, "If you're cautious of 'experts' who claim to have all the answers, then you'll find comfort in the theme of 'unleashed creativity' that recurs throughout the 20 essays presented in this book....Organizations will have to devise a strategy for understanding how [a microcomputer's] performance can be monitored. Regardless of what may happen, this book provides managers with appropriate ammunition."

Book Microcomputers Corporate Planning and Decision Support Systems

Download or read book Microcomputers Corporate Planning and Decision Support Systems written by David J. Gianturco and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-11-18 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ... being associated with the Wharton Econometric Forecasting Associates (WEFA Group), pioneers in the development of macroeconomic models, the authors bring the appropriate credentials to this work. The book is organized into six sections and discusses, collectively and separately, microcomputers, econometric modeling and forecasting. A `how-to' book that is not burdened by too much theory, it is extremely easy to read with short, distinguishable chapters. With only 269 pages and a thorough index, it is also easy to carry and consult. Business Information Alert This book, written by planners for planners, will assist the reader in applying microcomputer resources efficiently and imaginatively in solving common planning problems. This is not a book about microcomputers, nor is it a book about planning. It is, rather, the first book to clearly explain and vividly illustrate how a microcomputer is used to solve major classes of planning problems. The authors' examples detail ways to productively employ several planning tools, including spreadsheets, databases, and modeling environments. Further, individual chapters shed light on the microcomputer technology that is relevant to planning but often poorly understood. Current and developing technologies are covered, and a framework for comprehending and evaluating future technological developments is presented. Behavioral implications of the microcomputer revolution are not ignored. The authors examine the evolving role of the planner and planning department in the organization. For those planners feeling confined or confused by computing environments, this book may well point the way to greater independence and understanding. It provides a bridge between the computing world and the planner. Various sections explain how to build, run, and maintain microcomputer-based planning systems. The authors, through their examples, explain the major types of software useful to planners and indicate which type is suitable for each class of planning problem. The examples illustrate good practices to pursue and common pitfalls to avoid in micro-based planning. This book addresses themes and issues common to a broad range of planning operations and applications. It should therefore be accessible to the reader with little formal microcomputer training as well as the veteran who seeks an integrated vision of micro-based planning. This reference belongs in the office of every planner and planning manager who would like to make better use of computing resources.
