The boreal forest is the second-largest terrestrial biome on Earth and covers a 14 million km2 belt, representing about 25% of the Earth’s forest area. Two-thirds of this forest biome is managed and supplies 37% of global wood production. These forests also provide a range of natural resources and ecosystem services essential to humanity. However, climate change is altering species distributions, natural disturbance regimes, and forest ecosystem structure and functioning. Although sustainable management is the main goal across the boreal biome, a novel framework is required to adapt forest strategies and practices to climate change. This collaborative effort draws upon 148 authors in summarizing the sustainable management of these forests and detailing the most recent experimental and observational results collected from across the boreal biome. It presents the state of sustainable management in boreal forests and highlights the critical importance of this biome in a context of global change because of these forests' key role in a range of natural processes, including carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling, and the maintaining of biodiversity. This book is an essential read for academics, students, and practitioners involved in boreal forest management. It outlines the challenges facing sustainable boreal forest management within the context of climate change and serves as a basis for establishing new research avenues, identifying future research trends, and developing climate-adapted forest management plans.

The variation of plant physiological characteristics and functional traits has been recognized with hundreds of high-quality papers on topics of plant responses to environmental stresses. For now, despite the increasing number of studies trying to establish a linkage between plant physiological processes and functional traits, these covariations have received limited theoretical and experimental verification. This knowledge gap hampers our ability to understand and predict the comprehensive responses of plants to environmental stresses at different scales.

First, we provide a general introduction to using sophisticated simulation models to project changes across forested landscapes. Second, we give an overview of the LANDIS-II landscape simulation model, a widely used forest landscape change model. Finally, we provide exercises so the user can gain familiarity with a forest landscape simulation model - specifically LANDIS-II. We begin with a broad overview of simulation modeling. We briefly touch on topics common to all forest simulation models: scale, level of detail, parameterization, calibration, validation, and replication.Next, we provide a comprehensive outline of the characteristics of LANDIS-II that distinguish it from other models. We then describe the data needed to parameterize the model and outline various sources from which to gather the data. A description of the various succession extensions available for LANDIS-II is provided, along with an explanation of how one might calibrate the model and then validate the results. Next, we briefly describe a subset of the disturbance extensions available and outline procedures for their calibration and validation. We conclude with a discussion of how LANDIS simulates the effects of climate change on forest succession and disturbance. The book concludes with a compilation of several exercises designed for the user to gain familiarity with modeling forested landscapes and with using LANDIS-II. The first exercises (chapter 6-8) familiarize the user with running the model (necessary for all subsequent exercises. Subsequent exercises help users become familiar with the simulation of critical ecological processes: succession (chapters 9 and 10) and disturbances (chapters 11-12). Also included is an exercise to learn how to develop forest management scenarios (chapter 13). The final exercise (chapter 14) is designed to help the user synthesize multiple processes to answer more integrated questions about how to manage forests in the face of climate change and disturbance. Together, these exercises will guide the user through the mechanics of running the model and help them discern which extensions are appropriate for their specific research, planning, or scenario application.This book is not a substitute for reading the many LANDIS-II User Guides or the peer-reviewed literature associated with each. Book excerpt: The Two Hearted River watershed has been the focus of collaborative conservation and forest management efforts by The Nature Conservancy, the State of Michigan, local timber management organizations, and private landowners since 2006. Conservation practitioners and land managers in this watershed and other landscapes are faced with the challenge of developing and applying cross-boundary conservation and management strategies in the face of uncertain changing climate and ecosystem dynamics. The Forest Scenarios Project was created to provide insight into which strategies best achieved watershed conservation goals under current and potential future climate conditions. Rather than a traditional research approach where scientists conceptualize, plan, and carry out research independently, the Forest Scenarios Project applied a collaborative scenario modeling approach in which stakeholders collaboratively develop and model scenarios representing a range of alternative conditions. Collaborative scenario modeling and other transdisciplinary approaches have the potential to improve conservation and natural resource management by expanding stakeholder knowledge about the socio-ecological dynamics of the system and enhancing their ability to collaboratively make decisions. The primary goal of this research was to apply and examine a collaborative scenario modeling approach to provide insight into the possible consequences of management actions and climate change impacts in the Two Hearted River watershed. First, I examine the process of developing alternative landscape scenarios with the input of local stakeholders and identify the various approaches to knowledge sharing most appropriate for eliciting stakeholder knowledge at each stage. Next, I describe the modeling process and analyze results of simulations of alternative landscape scenarios to compare their ability to achieve conservation goals of maintaining landscape spatial heterogeneity and conserving mature forests and wetlands in the Two Hearted River watershed. Finally, I suggest a framework for the design, implementation, and evaluation of social objectives for collaborative scenario modeling projects when continued collaboration among stakeholders is a desired outcome. I use these three studies to draw conclusions about the ability of specific management and conservation tools to maintain landscape spatial heterogeneity and conserve mature forests and wetlands and the broader applicability of the collaborative scenario modeling approach in other natural resource management contexts.

Book excerpt: Forest ecosystems store more carbon than the atmosphere and harbour the majority of the world's biodiversity, yet their response to changing climate is uncertain. Forest simulation models make landscape-level predictions of forest dynamics by scaling from key tree-level processes, but models typically have no climate dependency. In this thesis I demonstrate how large-scale national inventories combined with improvements in computational methods mean that models that incorporate the climate dependency of demographic processes may be parameterised at regional scales. In Chapter One I outline historical approaches to modelling forest dynamics and present a discussion of competing methods of parameterisation and model selection. In Chapter Two I present a model of individual tree mortality in the eastern United States which incorporates species, climatic and competitive effects parameterised using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. The remainder of the thesis concentrates on modelling Spanish forest dynamics, so in Chapter Three I present a brief introduction to Spanish forest ecology. In Chapter Four I examine how aboveground allometry - the scaling of tree height and crown shape - varies with climate and competition in Spain for 26 species. Hierarchical modelling suggests that scaling theories based on wood properties do not explain differences between species, but climatic factors, and in particular hydraulic limitations, do. In Chapter Five I parameterise a model of recruitment in Spanish forests using Approximate Bayesian Computation, a novel computational method which allows parameterisation of individual-based models without individual-based data, and demonstrate that it produces ecologically reasonable results. Chapter Six presents a forest dynamics model parameterised for the major native species in Spain and tests whether it is able to reproduce observed species-climate distributions. Finally, in Chapter Seven I discuss the main findings of the thesis and avenues for extending this research.
