Book excerpt: The people of Labrador, especially the Inuit, rely on their surrounding resources to sustain themselves and their culture. In particular, the Labrador Inuit depended upon the George River Caribou Herd (GRCH), once one of the largest caribou herds in the world, to provide them with a staple food supply, nourishment, materials, and facilitate the intergenerational sharing of knowledge and important social and cultural norms, all of which are critical to life in Arctic and subarctic environments. This woodland caribou population, however, has declined by 99% over much of it range resulting in a hunting ban, and consequently, a cascade of impacts on the Inuit of northern Labrador. Examining and understanding these impacts is the focus of this thesis. As management of wildlife in North America is to follow the Public Trust Doctrine-to manage wildlife in the public trust-this thesis helps bring the information of Inuit impacts into the discussion to help inform future best practices for more accountable, responsible, and locally responsive wildlife management efforts in the North.

Book excerpt: What is the Public Trust Doctrine-and why should you care? You'll find the answers in a new, comprehensive Technical Review from The Wildlife Society titled ""The Public Trust Doctrine: Implications for Wildlife Management and Conservation in the United States and Canada."" The Public Trust Doctrine is an essential element of North American wildlife law, establishing a trustee role for government in the management of natural resources. Fundamentally, the PTD suggests that natural resources are universally important and collectively owned. The public therefore has a right to access these resources for hunting, fishing, trapping, recreation, and other legitimate purposes including non-consumptive uses such as boating and wildlife viewing. The PTD is also a cornerstone of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, a collection of seven principles that evolved over time and that underpin most modern and historic wildlife legislation in the United States and Canada. Ideal for scholars, students, or professionals, this review synthesizes current research on the PTD, coordinated by 11 scientists and professionals from The Wildlife Society, the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, and the Wildlife Management Institute. It's a must-read for anyone interested in the evolution of North America's rich tradition of wildlife management and conservation.

Book excerpt: "Co-management boards, established under comprehensive land claims agreements, have become key players in land-use planning, wildlife management, and environmental regulation across Canada's North. This book provides a detailed account of the operation and effectiveness of these boards while addressing a central question: Have they been successful in ensuring substantial Indigenous involvement in policies affecting the land and wildlife in their traditional territories? While identifying constraints on the role Northern Indigenous peoples play in board processes, Graham White finds that overall they exercise extensive decision-making influence. These findings are provocative and offer valuable insights into our understanding of the importance of land claims boards and the role they play in the evolution of treaty federalism in Canada."--
