Book Evaluation of the Rolling Density Meter for Rapid Continuous Measurement of Asphalt Mixture Density

Download or read book Evaluation of the Rolling Density Meter for Rapid Continuous Measurement of Asphalt Mixture Density written by Bryan T. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rolling-density meter (RDM) is a ground-penetrating radar (GPR)-based system tailored for rapidly and continuously measuring asphalt mixture density. This research analyzed the readiness level of the RDM and provided recommendations for how this technology could be used in QC/QA. To evaluate the RDM precision, four antennas were used in a laboratory environment to test six different materials. Increasing the number of scans averaged did improve the precision. For materials similar to those tested, the dielectric measurement was repeatable within 0.15 and reproducible within 0.22 or better. The RDM was deployed on six field projects for multiple paving days. Researchers evaluated the reproducibility of calibration curves, precision and bias of the system and of a nuclear density gage, and distribution of predicted air voids. Overall air void calibrations were good with an average R2 value of 0.76. The calibration curves were unique for different paving projects, and in some cases unique for different days of paving. Using different antennas for calibration did not influence the resulting calibration curves. The RDM was more precise than the nuclear density gauge and unbiased. The field data were used to perform a producer and consumer risk analysis. Different pay factors and percent within limit characterizations were calculated. The single-core acceptance method exposes producers and consumers to significant risk while density profiling with the RDM effectively eliminates risk. An alternative 3D radar system was deployed on three test sections. The system produced high resolution scans of the asphalt surface and subsurface. Further work is needed to tailor data processing for density testing. Researchers recommend adopting the draft test method and equipment specifications for rapid full-coverage measurements of asphalt mixture density using GPR.

Book Pavement Evaluation Using Ground Penetrating Radar

Download or read book Pavement Evaluation Using Ground Penetrating Radar written by Yuejian Cao and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this project was to develop an efficient and accurate algorithm for the back analysis of pavement conditions measured by ground penetrating radar (GPR). In particular, more reliable information about the thickness of the asphalt concrete (AC) layer and the dielectric constants of the AC and base layers were obtained from the electromagnetic field measurements performed on roads using GPR. A brief introduction to the existing methodology for interpreting GPR images is reviewed, and the theory associated with electromagnetic wave propagation in layered structures is described. Utilizing the full waveform solution, algorithms for back analysis of pavement conditions were developed based on the artificial neural network approach and the frequency response function concept. Software called ''GopherGPR'' uses the GPR signal from one antenna to interpret the characteristics of the AC layer with no assumptions on material properties. Thus, the new technique has the capability of providing information not previously available.

Book Ground Penetrating Radar Applications on Roads and Highways

Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar Applications on Roads and Highways written by Timo Saarenketo and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report will describe the various kinds of information that can be obtained from roads and highways with Ground Penetrating Radar. In the last 5 years, attention has focused on measuring the thickness of the asphalt surfacing layer on flexible pavements with air-launched horn antennas. Other antennas are available with substantially different depths of penetration, and for use in a wide range of other pavement applications. The purpose of this report is to describe the range of applications of GPR in pavement evaluation. Cases include subgrade investigations, bedrock evaluations, locating sinkholes, detecting frost damage, and identifying defects such as stripping or voids and monitoring crack growth within the pavement structure. The large variety of cases, conducted in Texas and Finland, illustrates the unique ability of GPR to rapidly evaluate subsurface conditions. The sinkhole detection study represents our initial effort to use low frequency deep penetrating radar on Texas pavements. A unique feature of this paper is the proposed classification of the frost susceptibility of subgrade soils by their measured dielectric constant and electrical conductivity.

Book Ground Penetrating Radar Sensitivity to Marginal Changes in Asphalt Mixture Composition

Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar Sensitivity to Marginal Changes in Asphalt Mixture Composition written by Eyoab Zegeye Teshale and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is gaining renewed attention from many state highway agencies because of its promising application prospects for rapid, full-coverage, continuous, and nondestructive measurements of the density in newly constructed asphalt pavements. However, several operational and technical issues need to be addressed before this technology can be efficiently deployed for quality control/quality assurance practices. The operation-related challenges are relatively easily addressed with proper project-specific management practices. The technical ones, on the other hand, require improvements to the testing devices and procedures and strategic investigations for further understanding of the relationship between the GPR-measured dielectrics and the density of asphalt mixtures. The latter is particularly crucial given the production and construction variability of asphalt mixtures and the accepted practices of field adjustments to mix designs. This study investigated the sensitivity of dielectric measurements to changes in mix composition and assessed the appropriateness (or lack thereof) of using a single dielectric-density transfer model to analyze field data measured on multiple production days. The study examined asphalt mixtures designed and manufactured in the laboratory with varying amounts of limestone, a high-dielectric aggregate source, as well as plant-produced asphalt mixtures collected on multiple production days. The findings indicated that the source/composition of the aggregate structure affected density-dielectric relationships of asphalt mixtures considerably. On the contrary, the relationship appeared to be less sensitive to normal asphalt production variability (day to day variations) as long as the aggregate source proportions were maintained intact. The experimental investigation proposed in this study can be easily employed to determine the proper amount of calibration models or the extent of allowable adjustment to the mix design for asphalt pavement construction projects.

Book Integrating Ground Penetrating Radar and Falling Weight Deflectometer Technologies in Pavement Evaluation

Download or read book Integrating Ground Penetrating Radar and Falling Weight Deflectometer Technologies in Pavement Evaluation written by T. Scullion and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first step in selecting the optimal rehabilitation strategy for any pavement is to identify the cause of the existing defects. In recent years nondestructive technologies such as Falling Weight Deflectometers and Ground Penetrating Radar have been used to evaluate subsurface conditions. However when used independently these technologies are not always adequate for identifying the cause of pavement deterioration. This paper will present the argument for developing an integrated approach to pavement evaluation wherein the high speed GPR survey results can be used to identify homogenous sections, locate potential subsurface defects and estimate layer thicknesses. The GPR then provides critical inputs to both the processing of the FWD data and the interpretation of the results.

Book Ground Penetrating Radar GPR Analysis

Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar GPR Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of expanding the MDT Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) program to a broader range of pavement evaluation activities. Currently, MDT uses GPR in conjunction with its Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) data collection program to provide layer thickness data for backcalculation. This program has included a review of literature and software dealing with pavement applications of GPR, a survey of state highway agency (SHA) use of GPR for pavement applications, a review of MDT's GPR program, and a review of MDT's pavement structures, environment, and pavement management and rehabilitation practices. A detailed review of 47 documented studies shows that GPR pavement thickness measurements typically fall within 2 to 10 percent of core values for the bound layers. Most of these studies have used a 1.0 GHz horn antenna (vs. the 2.0 GHz antenna currently used by MDT). Accuracy of unbound material is less precisely documented. The survey of SHA GPR practice supports the application of GPR for pavement thickness measurements; some agencies use GPR on a regular basis, while others use GPR on a project-specific basis. The application of GPR for measuring pavement network is 97 percent AC, with mostly aggregate base but some areas with cement-treated base, and maintenance is typically carried out using chip seals. Based on an evaluation of MDT's rehabilitation and reconstruction practices, it appears that the GPR program can be expanded to provide useful information for the following applications: (a) calculation of structural number for pavement reconstruction and rehabilitation design; (b) insuring proper depth control for mill and fill rehabilitation and cold-in-place recycling; (c) improved structural capacity calculation for network level evaluation; and (d) quality assurance of new pavement thickness and density. In order to investigate the feasibility and value of these program expansions, it is recommended that a field evaluation project be designed and implemented to evaluate the accuracy of GPR pavement thickness (and density) data on Montana pavements, and to correlate these findings with the accuracy requirements of the individual applications.

Book Ground Penetrating Radar Theory and Applications

Download or read book Ground Penetrating Radar Theory and Applications written by Harry M. Jol and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-12-08 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a rapidly developing field that has seen tremendous progress over the past 15 years. The development of GPR spans aspects of geophysical science, technology, and a wide range of scientific and engineering applications. It is the breadth of applications that has made GPR such a valuable tool in the geophysical consulting and geotechnical engineering industries, has lead to its rapid development, and inspired new areas of research in academia. The topic of GPR has gone from not even being mentioned in geophysical texts ten years ago to being the focus of hundreds of research papers and special issues of journals dedicated to the topic. The explosion of primary literature devoted to GPR technology, theory and applications, has lead to a strong demand for an up-to-date synthesis and overview of this rapidly developing field. Because there are specifics in the utilization of GPR for different applications, a review of the current state of development of the applications along with the fundamental theory is required. This book will provide sufficient detail to allow both practitioners and newcomers to the area of GPR to use it as a handbook and primary research reference. *Review of GPR theory and applications by leaders in the field*Up-to-date information and references*Effective handbook and primary research reference for both experienced practitioners and newcomers

Book Evaluation of Asphalt Overlay Permanent Deformation Based on Ground Penetrating Radar Technology

Download or read book Evaluation of Asphalt Overlay Permanent Deformation Based on Ground Penetrating Radar Technology written by Feng Hong and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Permanent deformation in materials can lead to rutting on an asphalt pavement. Rutting poses potential hazard to vehicles running on the pavement because of hydroplaning during wet weather conditions. To mitigate or remedy rutting, it is of critical importance to identify the sources and causes of the permanent deformation. Traditional methods mainly rely on cutting a trench to approach this issue. Despite the accuracy, it is labor intensive and time consuming, not to mention having a destructive characteristic. To improve on these, this study discusses the feasibility of potential use of a non-destructive technology with ground-penetrating radar (GPR). GPR is used to estimate the permanent deformation in an asphalt overlay on top of an existing concrete pavement. The GPR antenna mounted on a moving vehicle could detect pavement layer thickness at a fast speed. It also provides full coverage on the pavement along the driving direction. The permanent deformation is estimated by comparing the layer thicknesses between the right wheel path and lane center. In particular, the results could reveal the permanent deformation involving the following three critical aspects: (1) in which layer(s) the permanent deformation occurs; (2) where the permanent deformation is located along the driving direction; and (3) how significant the permanent deformation is.
