Book Ground penetrating Radar Calibration at the Virginia Smart Road and Signal Analysis to Improve Prediction of Flexible Pavement Layer Thicknesses

Download or read book Ground penetrating Radar Calibration at the Virginia Smart Road and Signal Analysis to Improve Prediction of Flexible Pavement Layer Thicknesses written by Imad L. Al-Qadi and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system was used to collect data over the different pavement sections of the Virginia Smart Road from June 1999 until December 2002. Three antennae at different frequencies were used for this research. The collected data were successfully used to evaluate the physical GPR detection limitations, to evaluate the GPR accuracy for pavement layer thickness determination, to control the installation of three different types of reinforcing meshes installed within the pavement, and to estimate the in-situ complex dielectric constant of several types of hot-mix asphalt (HMA). The data analysis results were verified by the well-documented structure and composition of each section of the road, in addition to the embedment of 35 copper plates (perfect electromagnetic reflectors) at the different layer interfaces during construction of the pavement. It was found that GPR is a feasible nondestructive tool to estimate the layer thicknesses of bound and unbound aggregate layers, HMA layers, and concrete slabs. However, interface detection can be altered if the layers have comparable dielectric constants. A technique was developed to estimate the frequency-dependent in-situ complex dielectric constant of HMA materials. Results have shown that the effect of the variations of the dielectric properties within the GPR bandwidth is insignificant vis-à-vis the accuracy of thickness estimation. The use of GPR as a quality control tool to verify the success of steel reinforcing mesh installation was also found to be feasible. Given the success of using GPR for the aforementioned applications in the Virginia Smart Road, it is recommended that the Virginia Department of Transportation use GPR more frequently as a quality control tool during new pavement construction projects and as an assessment tool prior to project rehabilitation and as part of Virginia's pavement management system.

Book Synthesis of Pavement Issues Related to High speed Corridors

Download or read book Synthesis of Pavement Issues Related to High speed Corridors written by Joe W. Button and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research project was to produce a synthesis of available information to support specific areas related to pavements for the safe, economical development of the Trans Texas Corridor (TTC). This synthesis is divided into nine sections, each of which deals with a specific topic or topics. These specific areas include (1) pavement design for heavy vehicles, (2) pavement design for light vehicles, (3) skid resistance issues on high-speed corridors, (4) issues related to traffic characterization, (5) smart pavements for high-speed corridors, (6) pavement material response to dynamic loads and performance prediction, (7) safety issues related to splash and spray, and (8) ride quality for high-speed corridors. Regarding these stated issues, this synthesis recommends state-of-the-art technology to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for use during development of the TTC. It provides recommendations for future research to fill gaps in knowledge and to take emerging technology to the stage where it can be implemented during the design and construction of the TTC pavements. This is the first synthesis study to address issues related to the TTC. A secondary objective of this project was to determine if additional synthesis studies in other areas of transportation related to the TTC should be conducted and, if so, how the process might be improved. This synthesis recommends that future syntheses should be more focused on specific, maybe critical, issue(s); the researcher should be instructed to present only those findings that are really new, innovative, and potentially implementable. One element of the study should pursue non-transportation related technology that might be adapted to transportation issues.

Book PAVECHECK

Download or read book PAVECHECK written by Wenting Liu and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Project 0-4495 an integrated software package called PAVECHECK was developed to merge the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data together with digital video images of surface condition. The new feature in this analysis is that point-specific layer thickness estimates from the GPR can be used within the layer backcalculation process. Most of the features of the existing COLORMAP and MODULUS programs have been incorporated into PAVECHECK. This report provides a user's manual for the new program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using insights, guiding principles, and methodologies, this book shows graduate students and doctoral candidates how to develop an effective research design. With numerous examples, the reader is gradually introduced to the creative process. At the conclusion of each chapter, a step-by-step plan of action is presented, which should be followed when designing a research project. Now in its second edition, the book includes several important adjustments, modifications, and additional sections. The authors have extended the presentation of the practice-oriented research types, which are based upon the distinct phases of the intervention cycle. In addition, the technique of unraveling key concepts is further specified. Numerous examples have been updated in order to present the reader with a wide variety from many different social sciences. An extended series of assignments have been included, offering multiple opportunities to test knowledge and to practice skills in designing a research project. The Appendix provides a thorough discussion for designing conceptual (causal) models. The book will help the reader master the difficult, yet very important, subject of developing and applying these models.
