Book excerpt: Trihalomethanes (THMs) are a major class of disinfection by-products found in chlorinated drinking water. They are an unfortunate side effect of the chlorination process. Due to possible adverse health effects, the United States Environmental Protection Agency has set a maximum contaminant level of 0.080 milligrams per liter for Total Trihalomethanes in drinking water. Recently, the way in which utilities report their trihalomethane levels has changed. This has renewed interest in on-line, near real time monitoring of trihalomethane concentrations. The focus of this research was the development of a fully automated instrument capable of on-line near real time measurement of THMs concentrations in drinking water distribution systems and its application to real world problems. A commercial instrument that was shown to be both rugged and robust was developed. This instrument was used to collect unprecedented on-line THMs data in multiple distribution systems. This data was then used for treatment process optimization in a functioning water treatment plant. Comparison to empirical models showed that it is possible to use on-line monitoring data to calibrate the models for a particular system. This is a possible alternative to the expensive process of developing an entirely new empirical model. Additional studies used the rate of formation of THMs to detemrine the time to the first tap for a particular treatment system. This determined amount of time was used with the rate of ormation for haloacetic acids to distinguish between concentrations resulting from formation and thos resulting from the use of bulk hypochlorite solution.

Book excerpt: A method utilizing computerized gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is presented for qualitative and quantitative determination of volatile organics in drinking waters, natural waters, or industrial effluent waters. It is based on the addition of deuterated internal standard, 1,2-dichlorethane-d4, to an appropriate-sized portion of sample and use of the Bellar-Lichtenberg method of purge-trap-desorb into determinative instrument. Method validation consisted of analyzing volatile priority pollutants at 2, 10, 50, 100, and 200 ppb with internal standard at 20 ppb in each of seven replicate analysis at each dose. Comparison of relative standard deviations (RSD) of internal and external standard methods of GC-MS analysis revealed no significant differences. This study also yielded valuable information concerning repeatability, reproducibility, stability of internal standard, linear dynamic range of GC-MS, and RSD variation with different area regenerations of diagnostic atomic mass units. Pollutant identification is based on retention time and total mass spectral comparison with authentic compound. Quantitation is based on measurement of the areas of retrieved diagnostic atomic mass unit regeneration of contaminant and internal standard. Using response factors determined from analysis of standard mixtures containing compounds of interest and internal standard, and the known mass of internal standard, the concentration is calculated. Lower detection limit for the volatile priority pollutants is approximately 1 ?g/litre. This method has detected several volatiles that are not Environmental Protection Agency priority pollutants.

Book excerpt: The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the purge and trap methods and the Hewlett-Packard model 7675A purge-and-trap sampler for the identification of volatile compounds in water by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The manner in which this instrument accomplished the transfer of volatile components in water to the chromatographic column is thoroughly described. Guidance is given to the analyst in the specification of operating parameters for the optimization of this transfer. The instrument was evaluated with both packed and capillary columns by using: (1) the volatile organics among Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) priority pollutants and (2) ground water samples from Rocky Mountain Arsenal. The Hewlett-Packard model 7675A purge-and-trap sampler proved to be adequate for identifying removable organic compounds in water at concentrations of 4 ng/ml (4 ppb) provided that packed-column chromatography is sufficient to resolve the components. This instrument is not suitable for capillary column applications.

The project, also known as COST Project 64b bis, aims at coordinating all relevant research in this field in the participating countries. An effort is made to improve methods and techniques for the identification and quantitative determination of organic compounds present in all types of water. The symposium permitted to review the results achieved during the past three years of research in the following areas: - Sampling and sample treatment - Gas-chromatography Separation of non-volatile compounds, in particular high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) - Mass-spectrometry - Data processing - Specific analytical problems, in particular the analysis of organic halogens and phenolic compounds. The volume gives a rather complete overview of the activities in this field in Europe. We are confident that it constitutes a valuable contribution to solving the important problems posed by the huge number of already identified or yet unknown organic pollutants in water. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, two water-supply systems on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina were found to be contaminated with the industrial solvents trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE). The water systems were supplied by the Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point watertreatment plants, which served enlisted-family housing, barracks for unmarried service personnel, base administrative offices, schools, and recreational areas. The Hadnot Point water system also served the base hospital and an industrial area and supplied water to housing on the Holcomb Boulevard water system (full-time until 1972 and periodically thereafter). This book examines what is known about the contamination of the water supplies at Camp Lejeune and whether the contamination can be linked to any adverse health outcomes in former residents and workers at the base.
