Book Using Environmental Assessment to Evaluate Forest Land Use Alternatives in British Columbia

Download or read book Using Environmental Assessment to Evaluate Forest Land Use Alternatives in British Columbia written by E. Pope and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the more pressing resource management problems in British Columbia is the allocation of forest land between competing uses. This study examines the technical evaluation of alternative uses in environmental impact assessment (EIA) to reach land allocation decisions. A review of evaluative techniques commonly used by provincial agencies to assess resource use was conducted, along with a review of the use of cost-benefit analysis. A case study of the West Coast Trail is used to apply the methods.

Book Visual Impact Assessment Guidebook

Download or read book Visual Impact Assessment Guidebook written by BC Environment and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest Practices Code of BC recognizes scenic landscapes as an integral component of the forest resource base. The Act requires a visual impact assessment (VIA) as part of the forest development plan and access management plan when timber harvesting and road construction are proposed in scenic areas with visual quality objectives (VQOs). The purpose of this guide is to document the recommended procedures for completing a VIA and to identify the evaluation criteria that will be used to assess whether or not proposed timber harvesting and road construction/modifications would meet the VQOs. It discusses VIA in the context of visual landscape management and in the context of forest development and access management planning. Then it goes on to procedures: planning and pre-field trip preparation, conducting fieldwork, and preparing and assessing simulations. Appendices cover sightline presentation criteria, photography data forms, digital terrain models submission criteria, calculating percent alteration in perspective view, and photograph presentation criteria.

Book Socio economic and Environmental Assessment for Land and Resource Management Planning in British Columbia

Download or read book Socio economic and Environmental Assessment for Land and Resource Management Planning in British Columbia written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of a socio-economic & environmental assessment (SEEA) is to provide plan architects, stakeholders, & decision makers with background on the socio-economic structure of the plan area & its communities, a description of the key socio-economic parameters that may be impacted by resolution of the resource use management issues to be addressed by the plan, and an assessment of the expected socio-economic impacts of the plan and/or alternate management scenarios relative to a base case. This document presents guiding principles for use when carrying out a SEEA in British Columbia, focussing on socio-economic assessment. The principles are relevant for all levels of land & coastal use plans, including land & resource management plans and sustainable resource management plans. Topics covered in the principles include methods of analysis, defining land use options, data review & presentation, assessing current & future economic development, estimating net resource value, government finance & Aboriginal community impacts, and documentation of stakeholder preferences.

Book Uncertainty and Forest Land Use Allocation in British Columbia

Download or read book Uncertainty and Forest Land Use Allocation in British Columbia written by Arlene Ells and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explains the concepts of fuzzy set theory and applies them to the problem of allocating public forest land on Vancouver Island among competing land uses. Two principal sources of fuzziness are identified: those related to uncertainty in classification (specification of management objectives) and those related to uncertainty concerning how actions affect objectives (imprecise technical coefficients). Comparing the results of classical and fuzzy decision models enables determination of which approach provides improved results, and which is more consistent with the political decision-making process in British Columbia.

Book Forestry and Environmental Change

Book Land Use Allocation in Central British Columbia

Download or read book Land Use Allocation in Central British Columbia written by Eduardo Bittencourt and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Land allocation use specialization is a forest management strategy designed to accommodate the wide array of values present on the forested landscape, having the potential to enhance both environmental and industrial uses of the forest. The details of such a strategy, however, are not fixed, being case specific. The challenge is to define the basis for zoning considering the multiplicity of values expected from each particular forestland base. Therefore, this work explores the implications of different zoning approaches for land allocation in the Prince George Forest District of central British Columbia, Canada. To do so, three objectives were set: a) evaluate the consequences of different zoning strategies on a specific forestland base; b) examine the effects of different area proportions among categories on the land use allocation; and c) explore how expected future climate change may affect land use allocation in the study area. The methodology consisted of defining the basic values expected by stakeholders from the forest land base and combining them using three different zoning approaches: three-zone, four-zone and multiple-zone. Results show that the zoning approach has major influences on the results, increasing spatial distribution and fragmentation with an increase in the number of zones. Furthermore, the increase in target area of a specific category results in its greater distribution over the landscape and better representation of the variety of landscapes found in the study area. Finally, climate change predictions can be proactively incorporated in land use plans, creating more robust land use plants. The methodology employed in this work enables the amalgamation of multiple sources of information to define forest values, it is flexible and it also provides spatially explicit allocation maps easy to assimilate."--P. ii.
