Book Computer Techniques in Environmental Studies IV

Download or read book Computer Techniques in Environmental Studies IV written by P. Zannetti and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992-10-31 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference ENVIROSOFT 92. Since the beginning of this conference cycle in 1986, EN VIROSOFT has provided a forum for discussion and debate for scientists, engineers and decision makers involved in the development and application of computer techniques to environmental sciences. Our main goal is to pro vide an opportunity for cross-fertilization among the several groups involved in the study of the environment. A couple of years ago a reviewer of ENVIROSOFT 90 made a very in teresting and appropriate comment. He congratulated us for the effort of providing a forum for discussion among environmental scientists but criti cized us for maintaining, in the proceedings and in the conference schedule, a strict division between 'atmospheric' papers, 'water' papers, etc. I agree with the reviewer and, in this conference, I made an effort to separate the articles not on the basis of their physical medium (air, water, groundwa ter, etc.) but on the basis of the methods and approaches adopted by the authors. Again, I hope that this change will improve the dialogue among scientists and, in particular, the interactions between 'air' and 'water' re searchers.

Book A Digital Path to Environmental Education

Download or read book A Digital Path to Environmental Education written by Emma R. Bassein and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital technology has become completely engrained in the process of scientific research. Grade schools are beginning to incorporate computers and other digital devices into the learning process as tools for learning other subjects, including science. Educators have experimented with a variety of programs that incorporate computers, such as digital tutors, simulations of natural systems, and interactive simulations. This study aimed to demonstrate that handheld computers are a useful resource in problem-based learning environments. A "mini-curriculum", focused on making handheld computer-aided measurements of the key environmental parameters in marine estuaries, was designed and taught to eleven students from the Palmetto Ridge High School in Naples, Florida over a two week period. Students' reactions to both the curriculum and the computers were overwhelmingly positive. This proof-of-concept trial indicates that handheld computers have the potential to be a very useful tool in problem-based learning.

Book Digital Technology and Sustainability

Download or read book Digital Technology and Sustainability written by Mike Hazas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together diverse voices from across the field of sustainable human computer interaction (SHCI) to discuss what it means for digital technology to support sustainability and how humans and technology can work together optimally for a more sustainable future. Contemporary digital technologies are hailed by tech companies, governments and academics as leading-edge solutions to the challenges of environmental sustainability; smarter homes, more persuasive technologies, and a robust Internet of Things hold the promise for creating a greener world. Yet, deployments of interactive technologies for such purposes often lead to a paradox: they algorithmically "optimize" heating and lighting of houses without regard to the dynamics of daily life in the home; they can collect and display data that allow us to reflect on energy and emissions, yet the same information can cause us to raise our expectations for comfort and convenience; they might allow us to share best practice for sustainable living through social networking and online communities, yet these same systems further our participation in consumerism and contribute to an ever-greater volume of electronic waste.By acknowledging these paradoxes, this book represents a significant critical inquiry into digital technology’s longer-term impact on ideals of sustainability. Written by an interdisciplinary team of contributors this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of human computer interaction and environmental studies.
