Book excerpt: Individuals who train to become behavior analysts should be able to organize, create, and display data accurately in order to make a data-based decision about the interventions being used for his or her clients. Behavior analysts most commonly use the visual analysis of the data to continuously evaluate the relationship between the intervention and the target behavior being measured. A multiple probe design across behaviors (i.e., Reversal Design, Alternating treatments and Multiple baseline design) was used to evaluate the effects of behavioral skills training (BST) with video modeling on three potential behavior analysts' single-subject design graphing skills in Microsoft ExcelTM. Behavioral skills training is a training package made up of multiple components, but for the purpose of this study BST included: rehearsal, video modeling w/ instructions, and feedback. The three participants were taught remotely via Zoom how to accurately complete the steps in the graph creation process for a reversal design, alternating treatments design, and a multiple baseline design. Results indicate that BST with video modeling was an effective and efficient intervention to increase the accuracy of three potential behavior analysts' single-subject design graphing skills on Microsoft ExcelTM.

Book excerpt: While applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the most commonly recommended therapy for individuals with Autism spectrum disorders (New York State Department of Health, 1999; Surgeon General, 1999), there is a significant lack of board certified behavior analysts (BCBAs; Bethune & Kiser, 2017; Maglione, Kadiyala, Kress, Hastings, & OʹHanlon, 2016). Telehealth may help to increase the availability of training in behavior analytic procedures, however, BCBAs have been slow to adopt remote training measures (Tomlinson, Gore, & McGill, 2018). This may be due to the in-vivo training requirements of common behavior analytic training procedures. This research compares traditional, face-to-face behavioral skills training (BST) to remote training in order to determine if the success attributed to BST is replicable through remote education. This research also investigates how the post-training outcomes of traditional BST compare to asynchronous online training with video modeling and feedback. In order to evaluate this, the researcher trained two groups on multiple stimulus without replacement preference assessment procedures. The first group received traditional behavioral skills training in person with immediate feedback while the second group received all training through pre-recorded video with self-monitoring and delayed performance feedback. Results indicated that both methods were similarly effective with in-person training being slightly more efficient for trainees while remote training was significantly more efficient for the trainer. The research not only evaluated the post-training outcomes of both methodologies but also examined the social validity of both training models. Both procedures had high social validity indicating that these methods could be used in the future. These results not only add to the body of literature on remote training in behavior analytic interventions, but also look at areas of improvement in order to make future training of behavior analysts more effective. More broadly, this research could help to disseminate ABA and remote education so people in more remote locations have equitable access to services.

Book excerpt: When developing plans to reduce a challenging behavior, Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) have an ethical obligation to first conduct a functional assessment (PECC, 2014, 3.01a), the goal of which is to identify the controlling variables for such behaviors and to use that information in training more appropriate replacement behaviors (PECC, 2014, 4.08b). It is important to train aspiring behavior analysts to implement an experimental functional analysis (FA) as it yields more accurate results than other types of functional assessment (Iwata & Dozier, 2008). Despite being considered a gold standard for training a variety of skills, behavioral skills training (BST) is often very time intensive on the part of the trainer (Iwata et al., 2000). Video self-monitoring (VSM) may be an effective alternative to train students, as it has been shown to be effective in the training of practitioners on other ABA practitioner skills (Belfiore, Fritts, & Herman, 2008; Field, Frieder, Mcgee, Peterson, & Duinkerken, 2015). Using a multiple baseline across subjects design, this study evaluates the efficacy of several alternative training strategies for training FA skills for undergraduate students, including interventions that featured instruction plus video modeling (IVM), and VSMN, with and without performance feedback. Results revealed that IVM produced a notable improvement in performance for all four participants, but that this intervention alone was not sufficient. All participants showed further performance improvement with the addition of VSMN and VSMN plus feedback.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the relative effectiveness and efficiency of three different training sequences in teaching undergraduate students in psychology and/or special education to identify the function of undesirable behaviors in video examples. The study also evaluated whether the procedures were effective in promoting the generalization from videos of role-played practitioner-child interactions to videos of children displaying undesirable behaviors similar to those depicted in the training videos, but in naturalistic environments. Behavior skills training (BST) and multiple exemplar training were utilized in all three training sequences. The data were supposed to be analyzed through a multiple baseline across participants embedded within a stacked ABC or ABCD design with comparison across participants. However, due to unforeseen circumstances that affected participant recruitment, data were ultimately analyzed through an ABC or ABCD design, with comparison across participants.

Book excerpt: This study evaluated the use of behavior skills training with the instructions and modeling components conducted using either in-vivo or a video for the acquisition of skills required to conduct a communication assessment. A total of six participants from a Communication Disorders and Sciences Masters degree program completed the training. The behavior skills training package included four components: instruction, modeling, role-playing, and feedback. A maintenance probe was conducted between three to seven days after training criterion was met. Results indicated that both in-vivo and video instructions and modeling of the communication assessment were successful in teaching students without a background in behavior analysis. The participants whose training included the video instructions and modeling scored 100% on their first maintenance trial block while the two of the three in-vivo participants did not. Implications for these results could further the growth and development of communication assessments as well as strengthen the relationship between behavior analytic principles to practices that overlap.
