Book Development and Field Evaluation of Summer Garments for California Agricultural Workers

Download or read book Development and Field Evaluation of Summer Garments for California Agricultural Workers written by Amy Nowicki and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California's agriculture industry is the largest in the country due to the vast expanse of fertile land and suitable climate. The produce feeds people in all parts of the country and world. Consequently, the industry is also one of the largest employers in the state as hundreds of thousands of workers earn a living from agriculture. While California's climate allows for a variety of crops to grow and flourish, it also presents challenges or potential hazards to farmworkers. One example is heat stress in summer since they are working outside in the fields for hours in the sun and a temperature exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This, combined with workers' own heightened metabolic heat production produced in the body from physical exertion, can have deadly outcomes. Heat stress is explained as strain in the body affecting physiological processes occurring when internal body temperature rises above 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The internal systems are unable to get rid of the excess heat fast enough. Heat can transfer from the body through conduction, convection, radiation, and evaporation paths. Among these, evaporation is the most important and effective one when the external temperature exceeds body temperature. Convection can also be a significant method when wind or air movement is involved. Generally speaking, the clothing we wear has a significant impact on our thermal comfort, by insulating our body to some degree. Wearing less or lighter clothing is an option to most people in the summer. However, farmworkers are required to be protected from exposure to pesticides by wearing long pants and long sleeve shirts, which could be another barrier to heat loss. However, clothing design can have an impact on the heat lost from the body and certain design features will allow for greater evaporative cooling and convection, which can more effectively cool the body. This can lead to the development of the optimal garments for California agriculture workers with reduced risk of heat stress. The purpose of this research was to determine how functional garment design can help to reduce heat stress in farm workers. In order to determine how to reduce heat stress in agricultural workers through clothing, the research was conducted in four parts: material selection and testing, garment design and development, garment laboratory tests on a thermal manikin at Boise State University, and field tests on participants working at the UC Davis Student Farm. The results show that garments with increased ventilation features and highly air permeable fabrics will have higher heat loss compared to standard work wear currently on the market. Subjective feedback from participants in a field test also were consistent with the scientific measurements. By wearing functional garments as mentioned, farmworkers have an easy, effective, and economical way to stay cooler in the summer while working. It is recommended that outdoor workers in California be educated on the clothing design features that can benefit their comfort and productivity by reducing heat stress.

Book Test Method Development and Evaluation of Protective Clothing Items Used in Agricultural Pesticide Operations

Download or read book Test Method Development and Evaluation of Protective Clothing Items Used in Agricultural Pesticide Operations written by DJ. Ehntholt and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protective clothing is the principal defense of millions of farm workers and pesticide mixers/applicators against skin contamination by pesticides. Unfortunately, few data are available in the public domain to permit the identification of appropriate protective items for specific categories and types of pesticides and pesticide formulations. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has therefore sponsored an effort to produce, assemble, and critically evaluate data on the effectiveness of protective clothing for agricultural uses. This paper describes (1) efforts to develop a rapid screening method for determining the compatibility of various glove materials with selected pesticides and (2) comparative analyses of collection media for use with the ASTM Test Method for Resistance of Protective Clothing Materials to Permeation by Liquids and Gases (F 739-85) permeation cell in tests of low-volatility, low-water-solubility active ingredients in pesticide formulations.

Book The Evaluation of Protective Clothing as Chemical Barriers for Mixers Loaders and Applicators in Agricultural Field Tests Designed to Meet FIFRA GLP Testing Standards

Download or read book The Evaluation of Protective Clothing as Chemical Barriers for Mixers Loaders and Applicators in Agricultural Field Tests Designed to Meet FIFRA GLP Testing Standards written by RB. Dodd and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pilot test was conducted, with all data generated according to FIFRA GLP standards, to monitor and quantify the barrier efficiency of two disposable test suits for mixers/loaders and applicators in hot, humid weather. The study was performed using AAtrex Nine-O as an example of an herbicide applied to row crops. The two test suits were SMS (spunbonded/meltblown/spunbonded polypropylene fabric) with a repellant finish and Sontara FC (wood pulp/polyester/spunlaced fabric) with a fluorocarbon finish; a 100% cotton chambray suit with a fluorocarbon finish was used as a control. The study design included three workers wearing each suit type for a work cycle of three tank applications. The cycle included mixing/loading the formulation and subsequent ground boom spray application of the formulation. To determine the amount of atrazine residue, twelve outside and twelve inside alpha-cellulose patches were attached to the suits and subsequently analyzed by gas chromatography. The average barrier efficiency against atrazine penetration, formulated as AAtrex Nine-O, was 97% for the SMS suit s compared to 80% for the Sontara FC test and the small cotton chambray control suit.

This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the latest findings on ensuring employees’ safety, health, and welfare at work. It combines a range of disciplines – e.g. work physiology, health informatics, safety engineering, workplace design, injury prevention, and occupational psychology – and presents new strategies for safety management, including accident prevention methods such as performance testing and participatory ergonomics. The book, which is based on the AHFE 2018 International Conference on Safety Management and Human Factors, held on July 21–25, 2018, in Orlando, Florida, USA, provides readers, including decision makers, professional ergonomists and program managers in government and public authorities, with a timely snapshot of the state of the art in the field of safety, health, and welfare management. It also addresses agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), as well as other professionals dealing with occupational safety and health.
