Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CEBAF superconducting linac is capable of accelerating electron beams suitable for driving high-power free-electron lasers. The 45 MeV injector linac with a 6 cm period wiggler can produce kilowatt output powers of infrared light (3.6-17 micrometer), while the 400 MeV north linac can produce ultraviolet light (~200 nm) at similar powers. The FELs require the addition of a high-peak intensity electron source (~ 60 A peak current) and extraction beam lines to wigglers with appropriate electron and photon optics. FEL operation is compatible with simultaneous baseline CEBAF nuclear physics operation. A design for a CEBAF-based FEL facility has been developed. The current status of the FEL project is reported.

Book excerpt: At the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), under construction in Newport News, Virginia, a superconducting, recirculating, cw linac will provide a nominal 4GeV, 200 muA electron beam for distribution to simultaneous nuclear physics experiments in three end stations. As of August, 1992, the 45 MeV injector - with 18 superconducting cavities in 2-1/4 cryomodules identical to those being installed in the main accelerator - has completed initial commissioning and has validated systems design by meeting energy, current and beam quality specifications. Cryomodule production has reached a rate of two/month, 12 (of 40) linac cryomodules are installed in the 1300-m-circumference tunnel, and low-power linac tests are being initiated. High-power rf amplifiers and power supplies have been installed, and checkout is proceeding. The 4800 W helium refrigeration plant is in commissioning and supports injector operations. Helium transfer line installation is nearing completion. East arc dipoles are installed. The control system is operational for the injector and being installed in the accelerator. Preparations are under way for preliminary linac beam tests. All major experimental equipment components are in industrial production, initial spectrometer carriage mechanical installation is proceeding in one end station, and scientific program planning is well advanced. Accelerator completion is scheduled for the first quarter of 1994, with first physics operations in the second quarter. Recent evaluation of energy potential shows the likelihood of ~6 GeV at turn-on, with evolutionary change to 8-10 GeV thereafter. A CEBAF R & D program for high-power IR and UV free electron lasers based on superconducting rf technology is being proposed.

But the authors of this paper maintain that this policy is showing signs of being outmoded. The time has come, the authors argue, for the Korean government to stop managing the economy's structural development and to redefine the responsibilities of business and government. Under this proposed compact, the allocation of resources would shift from the government to the private industrial and financial sectors. The transformation of the government bureaucracy from an ad hoc policy role to one of a transparent and predictable regulator is a key to the success of this undertaking. These new directions would present the government with enormous challenges. Greater competitive discipline and regulatory oversight would be required. While dealing with the complexities of the transition, the government would have to maintain macroeconomic stability and the momentum of savings and investment. For comparison, the study examines the industrial economies of France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, which underwent similar shifts.

Book excerpt: A calculation on the stabilization of the sideband instability in the free electron laser (FEL) and inverse FEL (IFEL) was completed. The issue arises in connection with the use of a tapered (''variable-parameter'') undulator of extended length, such as might be used in an ''enhanced efficiency'' traveling-wave FEL or an IFEL accelerator. In addition, the FEL facility at Columbia was configured as a traveling wave amplifier for a 10-kW signal from a 24-GHz magnetron. The space charge field in the bunches of the FEL was measured. Completed work has been published.
