Book The Influence of Dissolved Organic Carbon DOC and Calcium on the Toxicity of Copper and Nickel to the Freshwater Alga Selenastrum Capricornutum and the Zooplankter Daphnia Magna

Download or read book The Influence of Dissolved Organic Carbon DOC and Calcium on the Toxicity of Copper and Nickel to the Freshwater Alga Selenastrum Capricornutum and the Zooplankter Daphnia Magna written by Ucu Rahayu and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The toxicity of copper and nickel was measured in algal cultures of Selenastrum capricornutum and zooplankton cultures of Daphnia magna to determine if dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and/or calcium concentrations can influence toxicity of these two metals. Water samples were collected from the Raisin River (high DOC and high calcium), the St. Lawrence River (low DOC and high calcium), the Ottawa River (medium DOC and calcium) as well as two lakes in Nova Scotia. The concentration sufficient to kill half the population of Daphnia magna after 48h of exposure (LC50), and the inhibition of cell growth of S. capricornutum after 72 h of exposure (IC50) were used to determine the sensitivity of these species to copper or nickel toxicity in these 5 water samples. In Part 3, I showed that the protection against copper or nickel toxicity was reduced with UVB radiation even though the total DOC was reduced by only 18%. The role of EDTA in the toxicity of copper and nickel on S. capricornutum was investigated in part 4. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book Toxicity Testing Using a Chemostat Grown Green Alga Selenastrum Capricornutum

Download or read book Toxicity Testing Using a Chemostat Grown Green Alga Selenastrum Capricornutum written by HG. Peterson and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulatory toxicity testing with algae commonly use 72- or 96-h inhibition of growth by the green algae Selenastrum, Chlorella, or Scenedesmus. The long incubation period is sufficient for the algae to change the composition of the test medium. Organism-induced changes include the release of organics and the uptake of nutrients with accompanying pH changes. Both the released organics and the variable pH can change the chemical speciation of the toxicants; this may alter their toxicity. In addition, the competitive interactions between hydrogen ions and toxicants can affect toxicity as the pH varies. It is shown here that cadmium (Cd) toxicity to Selenastrum capricornutum increases by up to eight times for every unit of pH increase. Copper (Cu) with its different speciation pattern does not vary as much as Cd, and the pattern is different. Because the toxicity of the two metals vary differently with pH, Cd is 500 times less toxic than Cu at pH 6, but Cd is twice as toxic as Cu at pH 10.

Download or read book Photosynthesis written by G. Garab and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-12-15 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photosynthesis is a process on which virtually all life on Earth depends. To answer the basic questions at all levels of complexity, from molecules to ecosystems, and to establish correlations and interactions between these levels, photosynthesis research - perhaps more than any other discipline in biology - requires a multidisciplinary approach. Congresses probably provide the only forums where progress throughout the whole field can be overviewed. The Congress proceedings give faithful pictures of recent advances in photosynthesis research and outline trends and perspectives in all areas, ranging from molecular events to aspects of photosynthesis on the global scale. The Proceedings Book, a set of 4 (or 5) volumes, is traditionally highly recognized and intensely quoted in the literature, and is found on the shelves of most senior scientists in the field and in all major libraries.

Book Handbook of Ecotoxicology

Download or read book Handbook of Ecotoxicology written by Peter P. Calow and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-06-05 with total page 901 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Ecotoxicology provides a readily accessible, yet critical collection of information on ecotoxicological testing. Now available in a single paperback volume, this handbook represents excellent value. Part A concentrates on techniques, especially those tests used for prediction. Thorough descriptions of the main tests are provided, followed by critical analyses in terms of ease of handling, repeatability and ecological relevance, and finally, an extensive bibliography citing key documents describing test methods and key papers evaluating them. Part B focuses on the toxicants themselves: summarising their ecological effects, describing ways of predicting effects from physico-chemical properties alone, and describing and discussing fate models. Now available as a single volume in paperback An invaluable reference resource
