Book Alternative Uses for Sewage Sludge

Download or read book Alternative Uses for Sewage Sludge written by J. E. Hall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is an expensive and environmentally sensitive problem that is growing worldwide. Sludge production is increasing whilst previously accepted methods for disposal are coming under pressure or even being phased out altogether so there is now an urgency to find cost-effective and innovative solutions that appease environmental and public pressures. The purpose of the conference recorded in these proceedings was to review the range of alternative disposal/recycling options for sewage sludge. The alternative uses considered are in land reclamation, forestry, compost and soil production, landfill, incineration, and energy and resource recovery. The papers presented include recent research findings and technological developments, as well as operational implementation of schemes, showing that beneficial re-use of sludge can be entirely compatible with a cost-effective and environmentally sensitive approach to sludge disposal.

Download or read book Forest Soils written by Khan Towhid Osman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest soil characteristics are not only unique but their interpretation also differs from cropland soils. Just as there are diverse forest types, there are many soil variants that need different management. Today, forest plantations are being intensively managed for profitable timber, pulpwood and energy production. Site selection, species selection, site productivity evaluation, silvicultural treatments, and soil amendments need crucial soil information. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the physical, chemical and biological properties of forest soils and their implications on forest vegetation. Topics discussed include: major forest types of the world and their associated soils; forest biomass and nutrient dynamics; organic matter turnover and nutrient recycling; forest soil disturbance; forest soil and climate change; and forest soil management and silvicultural treatments.

Book Soil Amendments

Download or read book Soil Amendments written by Jack E. Rechcigl and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-12-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil Amendments presents a comprehensive and balanced synthesis of current knowledge pertaining to the environmental effects of soil amendments on various biotic systems, including crops, livestock, wildlife, forestry, aquatic systems, and humans. Separate chapters focus on the remedial effects of alternative farming systems and biotechnology with reference to specific biotic systems.

Book Land Application of Wastewater Sludge

Download or read book Land Application of Wastewater Sludge written by T. M. Younos and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Task Committee on Land Application of Sludge of the Committee on Water Pollution Management of the Environmental Engineering Division of ASCE. This report presents research on the land application of wastewater sludge, especially quantitative and qualitative aspects of soil-sludge interaction. Each year, approximately 6.2 million dry metric tons of wastewater sludge are produced by municipal wastewater treatment facilities in the United States. The annual sludge production is expected to reach 12 million dry metric tons by the year 2000. Sludge use and disposal options include incineration, ocean disposal, marketing of processed sludge, landfilling, and land application. Land application of sludge is achieved by spreading the sludge over the ground surface or incorporating it within the topsoil by injection, disking, or plowing. Sludge is applied to agricultural and forest lands for its nutrient value and to disturbed areas for soil amendment and reclamation purposes. At present, land application is the logical alternative because of its environmental and economic advantages over the other methods. Topics include: mechanisms for the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus, the role of trace elements, hydrologic effects of soil-sludge interaction, use of municipal sludge to reclaim mined land, and health effects. The report concludes with recommendations for future research.

Book Land Application of Sewage Sludge and Biosolids

Download or read book Land Application of Sewage Sludge and Biosolids written by Eliot Epstein and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-09-27 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 50 percent of the 6,900 million dry tons of sewage sludge generated each year in the United States is land applied. The principal controversies surrounding the land application of biosolids involve heavy metals and pathogens. Land Application of Sewage Sludge and Biosolids is a comprehensive, scientific text providing a complete review of vari
